Hand-Held Desserts incl Ice Cream in SF proper & close in

Hey Folks! I'm visiting SF next week for the Fancy Food show (yay!) and also looking at exploring places around town that are doing inventive things with Ice Cream and/or Desserts. Specially interested in wacky forms, as in hand-held ice cream (popsicles, cookie sandwiches) or cakes, chocolates, pies, tarts that have been adapted to eat on-the-go (like a cake on a stick? anyone do that??).

Thank you very much. Of course, a visit to Bi-Rite and Humphry Slocombe are already on the agenda.

Kelly

PS staying in Union Square... most places are going to need to be in SF proper, but a visit over to Oakland or Berkeley may be in order if there's enough on that side of the Bay to warrant the trip.

Burlington Vermont - American Flatbread

I've only been to the Burlington location, but I find it delightful. If you are a sausage fan, their Vermont-made maple sausage is very nice.

During winter (now) they are only open for lunch on Fri, Sat, Sun, FWIW.

Burlington, Vermont - Sad News

I walked by today and was heartbroken. I just moved here a few weeks ago and had already pegged this place as my favorite. Anyone know what happened? All the tables were still inside, set, so it hints at a sudden financial issue?

Boston's Best Delis

Actually, Dom's has a great Roast Beef sandwich, though it's not what most people in these parts think of as roast-beef sandwich. From their menu: Manzo
House made garlic roast beef, caramelized onion, Gorgonzola, arugula * New *
8.99

The bread at Doms is a feat unto itself. Fresh baked in house (sometimes it is even still warm!! Those are the best days.). They have two kinds--crusty (default) and soft. Generally I prefer soft, though both are excellent. Their Chicken Parm sandwich is very good as well (I recommend extra sauce and extra cheese (mozz or prov), but do crusty bread for sure if you do extra sauce), and I really love the Turkey Dee-Lite (which comes with a delightful spicy honey mustard sauce that I'm just in love with). And, if you are ever there on a day when they have the round pizza (normally they do square), get two or three slices and don't look back. OMG it is so good.

Waltham recommendation

Ditto Solea or Elephant Walk. I'd probably go for Solea between those two--it's fun and I enjoy the Sangria.

Where to buy edible flowers

I have seen them at whole foods. Maybe also Savenors?

Best Deal on Ice?

Dumb question: what is cocktail ice?

Best Pizza

I'm going to run and duck as I say this, but I'm not a fan of Regina's. it's certainly a board favorite, but I did visit the one in the north end and was disappointed. Crust was very good, but the sauce/cheese combo didn't work for me.

I only say this to make the point that you may have to try around to find the one YOU like--it's a tough task, but somebody's got to do it. :-)

Farmers' Mkts, CSAs & Farm stands- July 21st

I think we'd do better with longer time periods for the threads, more than a week.

Help me check off my must-see/must-do restaurant list!

Intriguing! But for goodness sakes delete Anna's Taqueria from that list. It belongs no where near some of those other restaurants. Having said that, where are you moving to? You could use that as a guide as to what to keep/delete on your list. If you're moving to Texas or Phoenix or Cali, for example, you could eliminate Angela's from that long list--the Mexican you can get in your new home will be far better (though Angela's is certainly good. You must get the guac.)

Favorite warm weather drinks (alcoholic and otherwise)?

Above you say (not a frappe) about the four burgers milkshake. I always thought frappe was just the Boston way of saying milkshake. What's the diff?

Where can i get Brazilian Nuts?

Second Trader Joes. I think I saw some there last weekend.

1st trip to Fenway paak

If you are doing the Red Sox thing, my recommendation is to experience the true craziness of it all and eat hot dogs and fried things and cracker jacks in the park. The first time I went I ate dinner beforehand (nothing special at all, but food) and then was really sad because I wanted the hot dog, some fried dough, yada yada. If it's a weekend maybe you could do a lunchy thing in the North End (Daily Catch?) and then keep yourselves hungry the rest of the day for the ball park food. There's a legals take-out inside the park as well, so there are options besides hot dogs.

Farmers' Markets & CSAs week of July 7th

Hi! So I hit Union Square this morning (July 12th). Strawberries were gone, but the raspberries and blues looked GREAT. I also managed to pick up some squash blossoms. Any thoughts on what I can do with those? I was thinking of trying to do that haloumi/ouzo combo from Oleana's a few years ago, but if anything has any ideas... let me know

Also had a question on the weekend markets near Cambridge/Somerville. Would you recommend something besides the Union Square market? It's my fave, but interested in hearing how the others compare.

I need the restaurant of a lifetime...both food and athmosphere

Good Luck! I don't have much to contribute on the restaurant front, but if you're into that sort of thing Teuscher Chocolates on Newbury has a DIVINE champagne truffle. I know guys don't like chocolate that much, but if you do, it could be a nice touch during the day.

Waltham Recommendation?

If you want something tasty and fun, not too fancy, Solea definitely fits the bill. Tapas, with nice Sangria, run by the same folks who bring us Dali and Tapeo in other parts of town. If you go you must get the goat cheese.

Boston's Best Sangria

Assuming that they serve the same stuff at Solea in Waltham (the 3rd tapas outpost, same folks), i second this nomination. I'm not even a huge fan of Sangria, but theirs is great. Nice complex flavor.

Hingham to get a Fresh Market

Interesting. There is a Fresh Market in Jacksonville Florida near my mom, which has been successful only because they don't (yet) have a Whole Foods. I find their selection OK--they focus more on the foodie stuff and less on the natural stuff than Whole Foods. There are some nice smaller brands that you can't get at WF due to artificial ingredients, preservatives, etc that FM will carry. I can't remember how the prices compare, but my sense is that it's just as expensive but not as upscale as Whole Foods? I can't quite imagine them successfully competing here. (That Fresh Market is shaking in their bones, because in that geographically massive city, a Whole Foods is opening up less than a mile away).

What to Order at Dairy Joy in Weston?

Fried clams, from what I hear. Everything else is pretty mediocre food-wise, it's more for the experience. I do enjoy their ice cream and the raspberry lime rickey.

New fun topic. What was the worst dish you've had and where

Ugh. 10 years ago. Eggplant Parmesean at Piccolo Venezia. I was visiting at the time, and could NOT understand how, in the North End of all places, they thought that was acceptable food. I'm still scarred by this experience, and remember vividly sitting there in the restaurant , truly sad over my horrible Italian food in the North End of Boston.

Heading to Boston, looking for good recs

While you're in Waltham, be sure to eat at Dom's! aka Domenic's. www.getdoms.com. It's a lunch-only place, but great sandwiches. I recommend the Chicken Parm, the turkey dee-lite (very nice spicy honey mustard on this. emphasize spicy). The Tonno (fish) also good from what I hear. This place has the best bread ever for their sandwiches, which is why it is so good.

Chowhype

Ahhhh. Knowing that I'm not alone in this world is nice. I've eaten at the North End location, cheese pizza, and gotta say, wasn't thrilled. Crust was very nice (that old oven burnt marshmallow taste--which my dinner companion thought I was making up until she "found" it--is amazing), but the sauce is lacking. Prefer Armando's any day of the week.

Best fun restaurant for $50

I'm going to second this. Oleana is suberb, especially for vegetarians. I still fantasize about the flaming haloumi I had there about 2 years ago. If it's nice out get there early and go for the patio--simply divine.

Closest thing to NYC Bagels in Boston - VOTE!

At the risk of asking a really stupid question, what's a flat bagel?

What's a newbie to do?!

I gotta say, I'm with you on this, Chris. On the Boston Board, I find that a large number of posts are immediately rebutted with a mean "why the heck didn't you search, you dumb...". I find all these attacks on people asking questions infinitely more bothersome than the repetition of questions. I mean, there aren't that many new restaurants to discuss, so if we say that old topics are off limits, we might as well just archive all the old discussions and be done with it. But that's not quite the point of a DISCUSSION BOARD.

Boston quick stop with a sweet tooth

Huh. Gotta say, I leave cannolis on the counter overnight and eat them the next day. They're fine--obviously not as good as fresh, but totally fine. I wouldn't worry about a 5-hour train ride with any of these things.

Where to buy scotch bonnets?

If you have a bike, you can easily get to Russo's on the charles river bikepath as well. Rode my bike there on Sunday from Harvard Square.

Wegman's scoping out a site in Westwood, MA

Interesting! I took a look at the pictures, and it seems that Wegman's may be similar to a Central Market (a Texas thing). Definitely a destination grocery store, if that's the case. Could be exciting. What's the ETA?

SF Hound visiting Boston 5/21-5/25 -Please review my planned eats

No reason you can't do both. Those pistachio macaroons are amazing. I do also adore the chocolate chip cannoli at Mike's--though I eat it so infrequently I haven't had a chance to taste-test or compare.

O'Sullivan's just pretends to have Boston's Best Burger

With you on this. I tried O'Sullivan's a year ago or so and didn't like it. Went back a few weeks ago, based on the accolades on this board. Dissatisfied again. The burger was TASTELESS. Shag carpet might actually taste better. As usual, the burger was also disintegrating, softball-shaped grease-running-down-my-arm fest. Bleh. I love toppings on my burger, but I'll go to Cambridge Common over this place anyday. Nothing to write home about, but very consistent and tasty.
