Toronto Hound Summer Re-Visit - Need another round of recommendation and critique.

Definitely agree with the comments on Clay Oven - one of the only places I go to regularly in Woodinville. It is the most consistent Indian restaurants I've been to on the Eastside and we really like the owners. Their customers become their friends. I also don't think the Barking Frog is worth the price and have been disappointed the last 5 times I've been there. Not sure why I get convinced to go back. In general, the Eastside is not a foodie destination :-(.

Toronto Hound Summer Re-Visit - Need another round of recommendation and critique.

If you want a Cafe Juanita experience and are willing to drive into Seattle they are doing prix fixe dinners in the old Lark space on Capitol Hill.

"Café Juanita 926 Pop Up offers a tasting menu only, Wednesdays through Saturdays from 5-10pm and will be $135 per guest with an optional beverage pairing for $85. Items may be ordered a la carte from the tasting menu on Wednesdays, Thursdays and nightly when seated at the bar. PLEASE NOTE THIS SPACE IS LOCATED ON 12TH AVENUE ON CAPITOL HILL. Reservations can be made through Open Table or by calling the number on the website'

The latest I've read regarding Cafe Juanita is that they won't be reopening (major remodel) in Kirkland until mid July.

Walk-In Happy Hour for a group of 20?

Vespolina probably meets those criteria and they say they have an actual HH on Saturday.

Seattle: Bow to Empire?

While I agree with your observations about Portland, the "Empires" do also exist there though perhaps on a smaller scall. For example, John Gorham of Toro Bravo has 4 restaurants now, Vitaly Paley of Paley's Place has 3, I think Andy Ricker of Pok Pok has 4 places in Portland and then others in NY and LA. Then there is Kurt Huffman of ChefStable - not sure what to call his Empire.

Mr Taster is leaving Los Angeles!

I haven't seen any mention of food at the Benson in quite awhile and friends who have stayed there have found it to have gone downhill. It hard to compare LA, where I lived for many years, to Portland mainly because you aren't going to find the diversity in a city that is about 1/8th the size and about 80% Caucasian. That said, there are a lot of good places if you don't try to compare or look to replicate something from home. Grayelf who lives in Vancouver visits Portland regularly and does extensive reviews on the restaurants there. While I don't always agree, she explores a wide range of places and looks for out of the way Mom & Pop type places. Portland's food scene is evolving and yes, the prices are lower than in LA or even Seattle.

Costco cash back reward with an expired membership card.

No, they will give you cash at the membership desk. I've done that many times.

I always go to the membership desk and cash it.

I suppose they could always renew the membership, cash the check, and then cancel the membership for a full refund if necessary.

Your disappointing purchases from Costco

Costco's website states:
If you are not completely satisfied with your Costco purchase, simply return the product to any Costco warehouse. Please include the product packaging if you have it, although we do not require it for a return to be processed. We also prefer that you provide your original receipt, but if it is not available, we will do our best to process your return without it.

I need a really good, thick wiener

There was a butcher stand besides Don & Joe's that may have been in the space you are referring to. B&B Ranch took over that space.

Costco or BJ's membership?

My son just filled a prescription at Costco that wasn't covered by his insurance. They got it down to $12 - Walgreens had charged him $150. More than paid for his membership and worth driving out of his way!

Costco cash back reward with an expired membership card.

The Costco site states the following:
A member must be an active, paid Executive Member when the Reward is earned and issued to receive the Reward. The period of calculation runs through the date approximately 3 months prior to the member's renewal date. Executive Members who downgrade to Gold Star or Business status or cancel their membership at renewal and receive a refund of their membership fee may not receive a Reward based on purchases during approximately the last 3 months of their last full year of Executive Membership.

Not sure what you mean by a coupon - I've always gone to the membership desk and gotten cash for it.

Late Report on PDX Trip over New Year's Eve Week

We've been for lunch at Pok Pok around 1:30 midweek and walked right in - not sure if you can count on that though.

Seattle-Portland lunch recs

My son-in-law recently flew the Burbank Portland route. While the times are limited he did have a flight arriving at PDX at about 11:30 am. Glancing at Alaska's nonstop fares in March, it appears that the price difference roundtrip between Burbank - PDX and Burbank - SEA is about $40.

Unfortunately, I think Levant's seared foie was only during the holidays, though since the menu is updated regularly checking is a good idea.

Ringside Steak House on Burnside, Portland?

The website shows HH starting at 9:30 and a real bargain, everything is under $5 - alas, I didn't see the onion rings on the HH menu.

Ethan Stowell Restaurants, Seattle, thoughts?

I tend to prefer the ones that are different - Mkt, Red Cow, anchovies & Olives. Do like the fancy menu at Staple & Fancy. Have only been to one of the neighborhood Italians, but don't find that I'm willing to drive from the Eastside for them. Would choose something like Spinasse instead.

Higher-end Seattle restaurant with good wine list and service

Interesting about Staple & Fancy - we usually go with a party of 4 and find the portions too big to finish. Maybe they don't upsize enough for larger groups.

Costco party fare?

In the fresh deli and veggie section, if you want to do almost no prep, you can buy ready made guacamole and salsa to go with the chips. Also to go with crackers there are several prepared dips/spreads. They usually have ready made veggie trays. There are also trays with pinwheel sandwiches.

Raw bar and Dungeness crab eastside: Kirkland, Redmond, Bellevue, Woodinville

A couple other places that have oysters for HH are Anchovies & Olives (oysters of the day $1.00) and Blueacre ( I think theirs are also $1.00 but their website is not current).

I was also disappointed in Matt's but didn't try the raw oysters. Felt the same about Beach House. Even though I live on the Eastside I need to agree with GreenYoshi and suggest a trip into Seattle.

Costco Food Finds - 4th Quarter 2014

I think the clusters were in a container with the packaged candies not in the bakery with the made in house stuff --- but haven't seen them. They were really good.

Best Seasonal/Holiday Trader Joe's Items.... for 2014

I'd consider Pipelchuma (which I had to look up) and Zhoug to be Middle Eastern.
