A New Orleans native visits Seattle for the first time

I think I'd throw Aragona into the mix. Comes across as more upscale than a lot of Seattle restaurants designwise, is definitely not quiet, food & drink is high end but the place still isn't "formal" though smartly dressed would fit in quite well. Same chef/owner as Spinasse which has also been mentioned.

Costco Food Finds - 1st Quarter 2014 [OLD]

This item has been available at various WA stores for quite a while. In the past, I've found that they don't always put in out, but will sell you some if they have extra packages in the back. Ask if you don't see it.

Costco "Brands"

It doesn't say Grey goose on the bottle - just checked. I always heard it was Grey Goose, but several articles on the Web disagree and say the distilleries are close to each other but different. One reference says Grey Goose used to be distilled at the distillery on the Costco bottle.

I'm pretty sure they carry different brands in different locations. I think mine (in WA) carries Trapper's Creek.

Any Seattle 'Hoods Where Lack of Parking Keeps You Away?

Coming into the city from East of Woodinville I'm also very aware of what dining areas are difficult for parking - and no, I don't want to take the bus or light rail. I've been lucky in Ballard and can usually find a space within a couple of blocks of the restaurants, but have also found a parking lot less than a block from Staple & Fancy and Walrus & Carpenter that has always had spaces. There is also a lot at the church near Spinasse, Anchovies & Olives, etc that usually has a lot of space.

A Most Expensive Piece Of Pizza

They just had a really great review in Seattle magazine. The reviewer must not have been fazed by the price because it had a sticker designating it "Cheap Eats".

the jarred oven roasted are much softer and I didn't find the flavor as intense. I also didn't think the flavor was as good as homemade oven roasted. They would probably work better than the sun dried in some dishes though I don't think the oven roasted are a substitute for the sun dried.

The oven roasted and the sundried are quite different from each other. Not sure I would call them a replacement.

Seattle Food/Happy Hour recommendations with specifications.

Japonessa does HH in the bar until 8 if yo can get a seat. Its in the whole restaurant til 6:30.
The HH at Luc was good - seemed to be discounted prices on many of their starters.
Aragona has started a HH but its only from 5-6. Looks like a good way to try some of their food and the regular bar menu isn't terribly pricey.
Cha:n in the Market area has an interesting and inexpensive HH menu - not sure of their hours.

Vancouver Hound's first trip to Portland -- help a hungry elf out?

Ox says that they are taking reservations for Valentine's day. I think I would check the other popular places that don't usually take reservations before just showing.

Other PDX food boards?

Here is a new listing for Valentine's Day - many are not typically recognized as "hot spots" so may have availability.

I actually don't remember ever seeing them in either CA or WA. Are they some place other that with the other canned tomato products.

No Sundried Tomatoes at Costco??

Are sun dried and oven dried tomatoes the same thing? I thought the oven dried were jucier/less chewy in general.

ipsedixit - I would go to Aragona too - but not for the food the poster is asking for.

Unfortunately though the recent posts aren't very positive about Maximilien.

Well, you can do onion soup and oysters at Le Pichet or Place Pigalle in the Market area, but not sure who would have all four.

Foie Gras in Seattle?

I think the foie on the HH menu is a torchon since it says cured, so probably not what the poster wanted. It sounds like the best bet is going somewhere really good that has foie and someplace else that is good for the view. I'd certainly advise the food and view in the lounge of Aragona over the food and view at Maximilian if they want to stay in the Market area.

Foie Gras in Seattle?

Had heard really good things about Maximilien in the past but more recent reviews have been poor. Some friends wanted to meet there of HH a couple of months ago and unfortunately we were very underimpressed. Definitely better places to go.

"Science-y" restaurant

I think Castagna in Portland does quite a bit of "modernist" cuisine.

Aragona

We also went soon after they opened since we really like Spinasse and Artusi, but sat in the lounge. It was early and pretty empty. Loved the food. The smoked tongue escabeche was wonderful, probably one of the best dishes I've had locally in awhile. Also had the quail eggs, the tortilla which was a really nice surprise since it was done with sunchokes instead of potatoes, the spanish sardines with housemade breads (Not sure how that would have been if we hadn't ordered the bread to go with it) and the fritters. We did two different desserts and really liked the contrast of flavors. The ones we had weren't too "modernist" , just the aerated, frozen chocolate mousse that came with the ice cream dish. Loved the "Xuxos" Crispy fried pastry stuffed with vanilla cream and sprinkled with sugar and truffle salt.
Already have a reservation to go back for dinner. Can't say I like the decor, but the food is a really nice addition to the Seattle dining scene.

I'd pick Anchovies and Olives over Rione XIII and it would also combine seafood & Italian.

Wonder what stores have iberico ham. Did manage to get the lamb discount and consider the rack of pork more than good enough to pay $3.99.
