Tenner a head in London

Definitely consistency issues, I've had one good and one OK meal there.

Is it this place? I can't find it mentioned as a restaurant, but it looks like one!

Haha, yeah :). I'm sure it wasn't available at the weekends.

Our lunch at Salt N Pepper was 60 quid! I think maybe it's more a greed problem :)

Haha true! And of course the Malaysian place in the shopping arcade now I think of it, surely under 10/head.

That reminds me! Mamasuka - The Polish place in Elephant and Castle shopping center is good (well, based on not much Polish food experience) and a fiver for the mains.

Good shout. I find the gouging in China Town really annoying, nipping in for a dish or two ends up being 40 quid with tea, rice, service charge etc. Understandable though.

I keep meaning to get the Soy Milk and Youtiao from one of the cafes there. Definitely under a tenner and will hopefully remind me of Taiwan!

So after realising my monthly eating-out bill is something ridiculous, i'm trying to stick to cheaper places! I know there is a whole load of places where two people can eat for 20 pounds.

I'll throw Saravanaa Bhavan in Tooting (and probably in the other branches) into the ring. It's Sound/North Indian Thali's are the best I've had and are really special, and clock in at 6 or 7 pounds. Other good Tooting options, Apollo Banana Leaf, Chutney n Dosa, Spice Village (if you order conservatively) work too.

Any good suggestions?

Croydon - current recommendations

This is great and just what I wanted! It's taken me a good year to explore Tooting and I still have places to go to (I end up going to the excellent Spice Village 8 out of 10 visits which doesn't help) and Croydon is vastly bigger so thanks a lot for the pointers. I am going to try SpiceLand on Wednesday!

P.s. I'm in awe of your blogs and sites and use your Reading Chinese Menus site all the time, thanks for making such useful stuff!

Croydon - current recommendations

I've been rooting around for good recs in Croydon. I went to taste of Kerala on Saturday c/o JFores and it was decent although just had the thali. Tasty Jerk was great when I went recently. It appears though that a lot of recommended places have closed recently and I'm struggling to see that Croydon/norbury can challenge Tooting for Indian/Sri/Pakistani offerings. Does anyone have any recommendations?

London - Seriously good Syrian pistachio ice-cream at Damas Rose, Edgware Road

Finally got some of this ice-cream, on my third visit! Well worth the wait, as it was delicious. They've tweaked the prices up though, £3 for a small scoop so maybe we've caused a flood of visitors.

Ah, great! I was hoping this was the case. I can only really get there after work. He said only in the mornings, but I think meant what you say.

I'm heading back to Heron this week (unless I'd be a fool to miss Mandalay?) so will drop in afterwards.

I went here in the afternoon yesterday, but apparently the Syrian ice-cream is only available in the morning! Alas.

Kolapata - Whitechapel

Thinking of heading here given a strong recomendaton, has anyone been here recently? Is it similar (or a slightly more watered down) version of Gram Bangla?

Brithday + Valentines day meal in Valencia

Hi!

I'm going to be in Valencia and need a really special place for a combined Birthday and Valentines' day meal, which are on the same day. Price is not so important, a lovely atmospheric restaurant at ~20 quid a head is fine , as is a pulling out all the stops place at ~100 quid a head. Nice architecture, interesting surroundings are a definate plus.

Any recommendations? I suppose getting a table for Valentine's day may already be impossible!?

Thanks in advance,

lamb noodle soup + other northern chinese @ chang's noodle on coptic street

I tried this place yesterday lunchtime, really impressed by how friendly and relaxed it was. I had the house lamb noodle soup, which as everyone else has said was delicious with a very complex broth. Also tried the ox heart, tongue, tripe in chili dish, which was cold with cucumber. The different parts complimented each other well, one of the nicest cold offal dishes I've had, although it's not a big list. The solid meatiness of the tongue mixed with the much softer tripe worked well.

Always good to find interesting places around that area, you could easily walk past Chang's 100 times without giving it a second glance, can't wait to go back to dig into some of the other options
