Hi! Can anyone recommend a moderately priced place with good Chinese, Korean or Thai food? By moderately priced I mean something with entrees that are < $20. There's one big catch... it needs to be a place with large round tables that will seat 12 people. Any recommendations would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance!!

hi!! i'm trying to find a restaurant for a group of 12 people that's relatively close to the Sheraton at Bay and Queen. In terms of types of food, people like anything except Indian or Sushi. We also have 2 vegetarians in the group (most people prefer mean, but the veggie people will need something!) In terms of atmosphere, we want something fun but where we can also hear each other talk because it's a catch-up dinner. Last, if you happen to know of somewhere with round tables, that would be ideal. I just moved to Toronto so I don't know the restaurant scene well here and would really appreciate any help offered!!

Oh, another option that would suit you guys well would be Ice House. It's discussed a lot on this board so you can read up on it, but what I can definitely tell you is that it will have options that will make both you and your boyfriend happy (a lot of seafood options like a really good lobster burrito or oyster po boy, plus a lot of meat options that are amazing). They make really good, albeit a bit pricey, bourbon lemonade and have a nice patio in case it's nice out.

I have to agree that bring your own wines would be great to check out. A lot of them are great, it's something you can't really do in NYC, and it saves a lot of money. Like others have said, a lot of them aren't veggie friendly, but Poisson Rouge might be a good choice for you. There are primarily seafood options, but they also have meat options if your boyfriend is in the mood for that. Plus it's close to a nice park that you could wander around before or after.

These are great! Just the type of list I was hoping to get. I did get to try Black Hoof during a trip to Toronto and loved it. The tongue sandwich on the brioche was one of the best things I've ever eaten. Thanks!

I like all kinds! Seriously... but if it helps to narrow it down, I'm especially a sucker for market food places, Japanese (Sushi, or especially a good Isakaya), cute little bistros, and Portuguese if I'm in the mood for chicken. I keep hearing that Toronto is much better than Montreal for Asian food, so maybe I'll add that to the list... I do really like dumplings. Thank you!!

I saw this question on another board and got curious about what you'd all think!

I think to really answer the question, I'd have to give it a lot of thought... but there's something to be said for gut responses too. The first things that jumped into my head were the Plogue a Champlain at PDC, the Tuna Duo at Ferreira (half tartare and half thin seared slices) and for third place it's a toss up between the Oyster Po Boy at Ice House and the Shrimp Burger at Kazu. For dessert, the Salted Chocolate Pot de Creme at Pop!

Moving to Toronto

HI! I'm a Montrealer moving to Toronto for work. I'm a regular on the Quebec/Montreal board and have become really familiar with the food scene here, so it's a bit daunting to have no idea what's going on once I head West on the 401... I'm pretty adventurous with food, and will try anything at least once. I'm interested in nice restaurants and more casual places that you can just stop in at on a whim (even if you have to wait a bit). Any suggestions for places, or links to threads I should read?

In terms of area, my new apartment is on the border of Koreatown and Little Italy and I'm going to be working close to Chinatown. That said, I'm always willing to travel for food.

Any help would be really appreciated!!

Montreal Dinner with a few restrictions - Help please!

Some of the French bistros make it a point to always have a vegetarian option - La Salle a Manger and Au Cinquieme Peche come to mind as stand outs. Another great option if you don't mind going out to St. Henri would be Tuck Shop. Great market food - none of it is too adventurous, but it's really delicious and I think they always have a veggie option.

I second the Lemeac idea, as they do take reservations. They can get a bit pricey for a brunch, though, so you might want to try something else if that's a concern. Byblos takes reservations for brunch last time I checked. It's an Iranian restaurant, so great if you want to try something different. For a large group at a place with more standard fare, Cote-Soleil takes reservations. One last option, Petit Marche on St. Denis and St. Joseph is good and it's huge. I've never bothered making a reservation because I've never had to wait long, even with a huge group.

Inexpensive date ideas

These are great suggestions. Some other ideas - if it's nice out, Muvbox in the old port can be a great cheap date. It's close to the water and their lobster rolls are amazing for right around 10 dollars... with your budget you'll have leftover for their Bilboquet ice cream!

I'd also suggest Nouveau Palais, if you don't mind the diner atmosphere for a date, and I hear good things about Arapas, although I haven't tried it myself yet. You might also like Reservoir's food and you could likely stay under $20 at Kazu, which is definitely worth a try.

I agree that bring your own wine places are your best bet for what you're describing. I second the Monsieur B recommendation, and I'd also suggest Les Heritiers, which is the same owner and is also BYOW, but has a less busy and bustling atmosphere than Monsieur B.

For an awesome diner i'd try nouveau palais on bernard and parc. I've been there for dinner and thought it was impressive, plus i hear good things about brunch there. He might also want to get portugese chicken one day (romados around rachel and coloniale is amazing and dirt cheap). both are places that would be easy to go to on your own.

I second kazu for dinner that's close to the museum. it's worth the wait without question.

If you haven't been to lawrence for brunch i'd recommend that too. it's at st. laurent and fairmount (this isn't close to the hotel so that rec. is for the saturday brunch).

For dinner near the fireworks i'd suggest kitchenette. amazing market food and great cocktails and wine list. you can walk to see the fireworks from there or watch them from right outside the restaurant if it's raining.

Hi! I'm from Montreal and I'm coming to Toronto for a conference and need to organize a group dinner for 15 people. As a whole the group likes good food and isn't too interested in trying things that are unique or different. Type of food isn't important (my boss said "Chinese or Italian or whatever") but I think they want a nice atmosphere that isn't too loud so that people can catch up easily. As for budget, I think under $60 per person would be ideal. Any thoughts or directions to other threads? Thanks!!!

Something special close to Metropolis

I have some self-professed foodies coming to town this weekend looking for somewhere great to eat close to Metropolis (on St. Laurent and St. Catherine) for dinner. They want "something special", and they're willing to pay for it. I was thinking maybe O'Thym or Kitchenette, or even Club Chasse et Peche might be close enough. I wanted to see if anyone here might have ideas or input before I wrote to them though.Any thoughts? Thank you!!

Group Dinner

Some people in the group are older and probably wouldn't want to travel far, although a 10-15 minute walk would be fine for everyone. The interests of the group are pretty diverse, which is why I left is so open... I know Indian, and anywhere that's strictly seafood are out. My personal favorite it is always French food - I love restaurants that can put together simple but wonderful meat dishes. My boss is a sucker for anything Italian, Greek, or Chinese, so any of those would also make him happy.

As for the vibe, I think cozy would be the best fit. Somewhere comfortable, not necessarily uber trendy, where we can hear each other speak.

Montreal has a million fortes!! One of our prize restaurants is Au Pied de Cochon - an AMAZING place that specializes in organic meat, and makes sure to use absolutely every pare of the animal. If they can find a way to fit foie gras into any course, they will. There are a million great French bistros, and most of them let you bring your own wine (with no corking fee!) If you're planning a trip up here, I can give you specific names :)

Hi,

I'm coming to New York for a conference and I'm starting to look for places to eat... but this board is so overwhelming!! I'm from Montreal, we have great food, but seemingly a lot less of it than you guys :)

I was hoping someone could help me out either with suggestions or with links to threads that might be helpful. I'm more than happy to read a lot, I just don't know where to start.

I need two places that can seat a group of about 10. We're staying in the theater district. Our price-range is between low and mid-level (upper limit is probably ~$50, although cheaper would be better, and we'd be willing to pay more if it's really amazing). I'm totally open about types of food - I'll try anything once. One person in the group doesn't like Sushi, but no limits other than that.
