Good Korean BBQ
Looking for good Korean BBQ in the DC Metro area. Preferably NoVa. I've heard there's good places in Annandale - can anyone suggest some spots they've tried?
Thanks!
Trendy/Good Ambience Dinner for Group of 5 in DC
Looking for some suggestions for a dinner tomorrow night for a group of 5 for a birthday. Nothing over the top expensive, but a nice dinner. Looking for something with trendy, unique, fun, or interesting ambience. A little older crowd. Was considering Blue Duck Tavern to give you an idea of what I was thinking. Thanks!!!

Anyone been yet? The menu looks great. Was thinking of trying it out this week...
Anyone try Good Stuff Eatery yet?
Tried Good Stuff last night. Took the metro from Dunn Loring around 5:30pm (all the way across town), and got there in time to beat the after work crowd. The wait in line was less than 10 minutes.
I ordered the 5 Napkin with Village fries, and the boyfriend ordered the Big Stuff Bacon Meltdown with the onion rings. We were hoping for some draft Blue Moons to go with our meal, but the taps were not working. We got bottles instead.
We both really, really enjoyed our meal. I'm not a huge burger person (I crave the mini's from Matchbox from time to time, but other than that don't seek them out), and I ate every last bite of my meal. My patty was cooked perfectly (good size - not small, but not so big you destroy the burger trying to eat it). The brioche bun was light and buttery. The best part was the fried egg and bacon. Really did taste "farm fresh." I love breakfast, so this combo to me was absolutely delicious.
My boyfriend also raved about his burger. Praised the tastiness of the bacon specifically (THICK CUT), and loved the cheese--tasted sharp and fresh, not processed.
We both loved the taste of the fries and the onion rings, though we'd agree with some other comments that: 1) the fries seemed a little "short" (though I'd rather have them crisp like they were than longer and mushy ala Five Guys) and 2) the onion rings weren't really "rings," more like pieces. Still -- good enough that we ate every last one.
Overall very impressed and definitely going to return. Looking forward to trying the shakes next time.
Everyday Eating: Restaurants you frequent
Boyfriend lives in Courthouse and we love Kabob Bazaar near the Clarendon metro. Their hummus is great, and they serve it with warm pita, fresh herbs and tzatziki. So good. We always order hummus, extra pita and two beef or lamb kabob entrees (big portions, I always have left overs) and get out for around $24. Great deal.
And, not really a restaurant, but we love going to Italian store for their pizza and subs. Quick, easy, cheap and tasty. We always pick up a couple bottles of wine while we're there too, can get some good bottles for cheap.
Tonic at Quigley's Pharmacy
Anyone been recently?
The Foggy Bottom location finally got their liquor license last month, so I was thinking of trying it out for a happy hour soon. Any menu stand outs? I know it's mostly a bar food type place, but sometimes you can find some tasty gems. Have to admit I'm a sucker for tater tots. Like to hear if it's worth checking the place out.
Thanks.
Sat. night dinner - fun for group
Thanks for the suggestions. Indebleu and Mie N Yu are probably a little out of the price range we're looking for (although they do look fun). I think we're going to look into Sette and Jaleo, and perhaps Tabaq Bistro.
Sat. night dinner - fun for group
My roommate has a friend coming into town and was hoping to go to dinner somewhere fun and reasonably priced. I would give Matchbox and 2 Amy's as examples of what we're looking for (did 2 Amy's last weekend, and we'd do Matchbox but we're a little weary of no reservations for a group on a Saturday night). We've done a group thing at Zengo before too but weren't floored, so want to try something different.
Any suggestions? Location isn't a big issue (DC or NoVA), nor a particular type of cuisine.
Thanks!
Blech meal at Restaurant 3 tonight (Clarendon)
Dined here a few weeks ago when my family was in town.
My dad and I had the same reaction to the spinach salad. He has a good taste for these things and determined it's horseradish in the dressing that makes it taste so salty/pungent. This was confirmed by our waiter. My mom said it was 'okay' when she tried it, but my dad and I both thought it was inedible. Their caesar was good.
My dad also enjoyed the filet and the "tater tot." We also had the short ribs, the tuna, and the sea bass. They were all fine (the sea bass the best of the bunch), but not spectacular.
One big disappointment was the wine list. We found nearly all the selections to be overpriced. $70 for a screw top bottle...?
If you do return, GET DESSERT! It was by far the best part of the meal. We ordered three and they were all delicious, but the knock out was the malasada. They are like little "hawaiian doughnuts" (how our waiter described them) that comes with a chocolate sauce with a hint of coffee to dip them in. Yummm.
Marvin--New Restaurant in Shaw
This updated thread reminded me to post again on my recent experience (second visit). You can note above my overrall very positive review for my first visit. Unfortunately, I wasn't quite as impressed the second time.
To start off my group of four waited quite a long time for drinks, then once the orders were finally taken we were informed they were out of two of the beer selections we had made (not too late on a Friday night).
Then, when we were finally able to order we were also informed that they only had one order of chicken and waffles left (two in our group had ordered). We were surprised that they would be out of what might be considered their 'signature dish' so early on a Friday night (especially one that seems to include pretty basic ingredients. Chicken...waffle batter...?). My boyfriend graciously let me have it, but then had to rush to make his substitution order as the waitress stood over him and told him that if he didn't hurry, both orders would be gone by the time she got back to punch them in.
Perhaps the waitress was having an off night. In addition to that faux pas, she TWICE walked away from the table after taking down orders from three members of the group and ignoring a fourth. I also had to specifically ask for the bread to be brought to the table after waiting about 20 minutes and getting through one round of drinks.
The experience wasn't all bad. Everyone in the group really enjoyed their food. Chicken and waffles expectional just as before. The hamburger, braised pork shank and moules and frites with andouille sausage were also ordered. My friend wasn't wowed by the mussels (though not bad), but thought the frites were better than Brasserie Beck (they've gotten some mixed reviews on here). The sauces were especially good (is that a curry mustard...?).
I also noticed the issue with timing. I was asked at least twice if I was finished, and my plate was whisked away pretty much the moment the last bite entered my mouth.
Not sure if it was just an off night, a bad waitress or just plain bad service at Marvin in general, but I wasn't as happy with my experience as I was the first time. Hopefully they can get those things worked out because the food really is delicious and worth the trip.
Marvin Review
I reviewed Marvin in another thread. I too LOVED the chicken and waffles. So delicious. I didn't mind the brussels sprouts. I thought they were good.
Spot for group near Penn Ave. please!
Yum that sounds great. Seems like a fun place and I love good guacamole. What is the dress like?

Another friend had mentioned Ceiba when I asked for recs. Good/bad reports on that? Parents are staying at the JW Marriott near the White House. If they can cab it somewhere reasonably that would be fine too. Prefer not to mess with metro.
Spot for group near Penn Ave. please!
Thanks! Didn't think of that, and I've been wanting to try it.

Parents are coming in this weekend. Dad has been eating some pretty bland London fare for a while, so looking for something hopefully a little tastier!
I have two dilemmas.
---One is that it's going to be a medium size crowd (Parents, me, sister, boyfriend and friend) so I don't want anything too expensive (which some places on Pennsylvania can be, ie. Citronelle may be a bit much for this outing). Something $15-$28ish per dish would be fine, so it doesn't need to be inexpensive per se, just not extravagant when you factor in wine and apps or dessert.
---Two is that my dad can be a little hard of hearing, so I can't have anything too loud. I know this will be somewhat difficult to find on Friday night, but I'd just like to hopefully carry on a conversation.
I'd like something in the Pennsylvania Avenue area, but if you've got a great rec somewhere else I'll definitely look into it.
Thanks!
Grand Cru Ballston?
Yes, went with boyfriend on a Friday night a month or two ago. We weren't super hungry, just wanted a few nibbles before going out. I got an Italian wine flight which was good, and a good value. Boyfriend was pretty impressed with the beer selection, especially for a "wine centric" place. We ordered a Thai chicken appetizer which was just okay, the make your own charcuterie and cheese plate was good and a pretty good value, and also the vegetable fondue. The fondue was tasty and a fun "date" thing to do, and we were surprised at how full we were after it. They have wine tastings every week that might be worth checking out, you get a pretty good discount on the featured wines I believe.
Marvin--New Restaurant in Shaw
I went to Marvin last week. I'll agree with everyone so far--the chicken and waffles were absolutely delicious! My boyfriend ordered them and I stole many bites! I love sweet breakfasts and fried chicken so this was a perfect dish for me.
If that isn't your cup of tea (although I can't imagine that...) the braised pork shoulder I ordered was also good. The flavor was tasty, although I thought it could've been stronger. The lentils that came with the dish almost became the star...cooked with bacon and delicious spices, I finished every last bite. Perfect with the crispy green beans (what's worse than mushy green beans?).
The shrimp and grits appetizer was good but not great, next time will try something else or skip apps and try a dessert.
I thought the prices were reasonable; we made out well under $100 with appetizer, two entrees and a bottle of wine. The dining area is a bit noisy (maybe from the bustling bar and the front of the dining room), but my boyfriend (soul/funk enthusiast) and I really enjoyed the scene at the upstairs lounge area after dinner. Great date spot.
All in all I reallly enjoyed it and I will definitely return. I want to try their mussels and fries (seemed like it was popular order when we were there), although I don't know if I could bring myself to miss out on chicken and waffles...
