question for san diegans - what is the state of the food "scene" right now?

You can definitely go to a different farmers market every day here too.

San Diego isn't in the same league as New York, San Francisco, or London, but I think it compares well to second tier food cities like Boston or Portland.

There are a lot of nicer casual restaurants like cafe chloe, urban solace, smoking goat, wine vault. A lot of great mexican places. Good burgers & Pizza. Great craft breweries that often pair well with food trucks. And if you head over the border to Tijuana there is a whole other scene from Mision 19 on down.

I've had some good, fun meals in LA at Animal wuersthouse..., but overall I don't think it is any better than San Diego.

Do you have a favorite Farmer's Market?

Little Italy is my favorite to bring visitors to. The view of the water helps.

Hillcrest is really good, and seems to be better for eating there than Little Italy - more ready made food venders.

North Park is my local and the one we go to the most.

Eclipse Chocolates dinner events

That seems on par with what I would expect.

I've been to brunch twice now. Both times the sweet or chocolatey items have been excellent, the savory courses have been ok.

I think they try to hard to make every dish have a "dessert" element to it and a lot of the time it doesn't work.

But the sweet courses are great. They do a great job of using salt to enhance them and the drinking chocolates work really well.

Service has been very spotty both times.

They are clearly a really good chocolate shop trying to figure out how to be a restaurant. I hope they can do it.

Best fish tacos and cheap oysters?

Alchemy and Sea Rocket Bistro in North/South Park both do dollar oysters some nights - that's the best I've got.

Anniversary dinner in San Diego

The smoking goat is excellent.

Portion size is quite subjective. One the main reasons I like wine vault so much is that I can have a three course meal and not feel sick afterwards. At most restaurants if I order an appetizer, entree, and dessert to myself I feel overly stuffed.

Restaurant week is the same way. A lot of people dislike the smaller portion size whereas I feel the smaller portion sizes allow me to try more courses and not feel sick afterwards.

Anniversary dinner in San Diego

WIne Vault is the best value in San Diego. If you go Friday night for $35 you get 3 courses with wine pairings. It has the special feel without costing too much. Just make sure and make a res.

Cafe Chloe, Urban Solace are also very nice and pretty good value.

NYC coming to SD

Here is a review last month for Mision 19 by a london food blogger. Personally, I give it a 10/10.

San Diego Trip

North Park needs a nice botique hotel. The Lafeyette is in the right location, and great for a drink by the pool - but it is not nearly as nice / comfortable as the downtown hotels.

Good date restaurants in Normal Heights area

They don't serve alcohol, or allow byob. A date without alcohol is like a day without sunshine.

Pretzel Rolls

They have great pretzel roles at Amaya. We made some at home with limited success after eating there. I haven't tried the Costco versions.
