Via Allegro overated? Overpriced? Other places suffering the same affliction?
I'd have to agree with the others in terms of venue. Strange place to put a fine-dining establishment. Pricey yeah, but you get what you pay for. We were in the area to get a bite, nothing fancy so we were surprised when we walked in. High end.
Both my risotto and my wife's pizza were way to salty for my taste. it kind of ruined it for me. The list of awards is impressive but they seem to mostly rely on their wine abilities . . .'Best Sommelier' is nice but i'm not there just to drink. Much less.
Would I go back? Yeah but I'd tell the waiter to convey to the chef to use a less heavier hand on the salt.
Afghani at Downsview Market
You lucky person! I had a similar experience at the market. Great food and great people. They were really nice. And they served you hot tea in a real glass, nice touch. I remember them telling me about their Pharmacy location but I don't get out that way very often. Would love to go there some time. Indeed a real gem.
Peter's Chun King
i walked past there today and they're opening up a Sushi restaurant . . Sushi King i think it's called.
TORONTO 1 NIGHT ONLY... BEST CHINESE??
do you mean CLOSED as in closed for good? been going there for more than 20 years and it has come as a surprise to a number of us here who work nearby.
Peter's Chun King
we found it closed a couple of weeks ago (this is July 2009). anybody know what's going on? is it permanent? are they going through renovations? i'm talking about the restaurant at 289 College st.
Burger @ Yellow Griffin Pub (review) YUM!!!
I went there last night with my wife and 6 year old around 5:30 and put 2 hours on the meter around the corner thinking it would be more than enough time. The place was busy but not packed.
We were told the 3 burgers we ordered would be 30 minutes. We can appreciate that quality takes time but were still surprised about the wait. We asked that they send some fries up for our kid soon so that she wouldn't have to wait so long. Luckily they came by within a few minutes.
The food took nearly 45 minutes from the time the order was placed which was longer than the already long estimate of 30.
No complaints about the burgers. They were quite good although I think mine could've been cooked a bit longer. Hard to tell with the low lights.
The bill took a long time to come as well as the payment.
Good food. Long wait. And I got back to the vehichle at around 7:15.
The experience took nearly two hours.
We went once before on a Saturday afternoon and the food did take a while but we were patient about it.
Will go back when we're not in a rush otherwise I'd rather go down to the Swiss Chalet down the street where I can be in and out in an hour.
From seeing the other posts, things haven't changed in over a year.
Peter's Chun King
Peter's has been a favourite down here for years. I've been going there for 20+ years. Their Spicy Chicken with Peanut sauce is a lunch time hit. They can't get it out of the kitchen fast enough.
Reviews are subjective .. and yes not everything on the menu is a hit and some of them can be a real miss . . but if you know what to get . .you won't be disappointed. I mean, come on, they've been around like forever and they're always busy. If it was that bad, they'd have gone out of business years ago especially since they are so close to so many other Chinese restaurants.
What's happened to Chung king on Spadina?
damn, i love that crispy beef . . i can understand why they moved though . . i'm sure they'll do a good business if they are at the Pacific Mall.
as someone who has gone to Peter's Chung King on College ( . .yuck?) for more than 20 years, i'd have to say that i like the food there . . and i've been to lots of chinese places over the years. the all-time big seller is the Spicy Chicken with peanut sauce . . the best i've ever had.
i'm not as thrilled with the broccolli and beef but so what . . .
there's a whole army of people that go to Peter's and they've all been happy with the food.
let's face it, when you're near chinatown, there's lots of competition . . including Peter's and Saigon Palace just a few doors down.
Rock salt
I need to find rock salt for making ice cream. My 6 year old girl has one of those kiddy ice cream maker and she'd love to make some. I'm not sure exactly what rock salt looks like or where to buy it. Could it be called something else?
Where in Toronto would I find rock salt?
Thanks.
Chowhound worthy stops on 401 (Toronto to Montreal)
Division St. in Kingston. Exit 617 on Hwy 401. We stop there every time we make the trip to MTL from TO. There's a Denny's at the Days Inn hotel, a Wendys, McD, Arbys and more. . .2 minutes from the 401. There gas stations too. It's everything you need.
If you plan on making a few stops, the Big Apple near Colborne is a nice diversion . . .and yes they make tons of pies. Restaurant plus small zoo. Great for kids.

There are also quite a few rest stops along the way that include Tim's, Wendys, McD. In my experience, there's than I find going to Niagara.
Give me a shout if you want more info.
Restaurant Makeover at Massimo's
The episode aired last night. It wasn't that great. Not sure where the $30K went. I've seen better builds in larger restaurants.
Last night's episode promped me to go today for lunch. I've been going there for 25 years, ever since I was a student at UofT. I miss the old guy behind the counter. He was lively. The pizza hasn't really changed that much over the years. The margherita is still great and they use fresh basil so you can't go wrong there. The crust might be a bit different. I still go there once a week.
The guys in there are pretty quiet and mind their own business. . .it's usually "hi, what'll you have" and "bye". They're usually pretty busy but will chat with you when they have some down time. I've never had a problem with these guys.
Sorry to hear some have had bad experiences but me and my coworkers continue to go there.
Authentic Newfie food
PEI. I was watching him last night and he was talking about dinner inspirations from his backyard in PEI.
Authentic Newfie food
No problem . . .all u need to do is walk in on a Saturday night and say "What's the score, eh?" or perhaps "Eh by', anybody know the score on the game?" After that, find a seat and ask for a menu.
Authentic Newfie food
Thanks to all for the advice! I'd raise a glass of Screech as a toast if only I had some. I like watching Michael Smith on TV and the Food network is one of my faves for sure.
where to buy cake in TO
Irresistible Cakes in Woodbridge makes great cakes. All cakes lactose free and created in a completely nut-free facility. www.icakes.ca
Authentic Newfie food
OK, I'm ready to take the plunge. I've experienced poutine (good and bad) and I'm ready to expand my Canadian horizons further east. Anybody know where I can get decent Newfie food here in Toronto. I don't expect I'd find cod tongue or scruncheon but hey, you never know. And can someone tell me what the heck maggotty butter is (besides being part of the lyrics in I'se the Bye)?. Thanks.
Driving the 401 - Toronto to Montreal
I usually get off at Division Street which is Exit 619, I believe and make my way to Denny's at the Day's Inn. It's not gourment but for me and my family it's quick and a decent rest stop. Besides that, there's tons of other fast foods on the strip, KFC, Wendy's, Arbys etc. There's gas stations and a mall across the street. It ain't glamorous but it serves our needs.
Office functions/Christmas parties
I'd be interested in finding a place in the downtown Toronto area that has decent food but also has some fun for office parties. I'm thinking some pool tables, games . . along the lines of a Dave and Busters but without having to go up to Woodbridge.
