Salt & Pepper Oxtail at Tai Wu/Mr Fong BBQ Noodle House Daly City

Going to try again this weekend.

If I drive into the strip mall with Classic Bowl on my right, and the FULL service Tai Wu/Mr Fong restaurant on my left, do I keep going straight to get to the bbq place?

Oh, just reading this I realized that there must be two places called Tai Wu Mr. Fong! The place I saw was right directly across from the bowling alley. Where is this place in relation to that?

Hi, I wonder if I went to the right place! Same strip mall as Classic Bowl, and my GPS said 950 King.

My younger son and I went around 12noon this past Saturday; the place was crowded and I saw dim sum carts and trays. We were seated at a table right in front of a room labelled "VIP".

When I looked through the menus, I didn't see the duck yee foo won ton, and not speaking Chinese, I wasn't able to clearly state what I wanted from a waiter. Is there a secret menu, or is this item only served at dinner? The only wonton I saw on the menu was wor wonton.

Wow, the oxtail looks great, but even better is that they have duck yee foo wonton! Haven't had that since Sun Hun Heung. Will have to make it to Daly City, thanks for the post!

Suggestions for X'mas day dining...

Just saw that Finnegan's in Novato is open on Christmas Day. I always like their roast chicken with brussel sprouts.

ISO Turkey Tails (yes, just tails)

I remember seeing packages of turkey tails at the Novato Safeway (the one on Diablo) about a week ago.

Duk Hing Chinese Deli & Meat [Chinatown, San Francisco]

Thanks, very good advice. SF Chinatown is not for the faint of heart.

I should also get my mom's recipe for her sticky rice. :)

Love this:

" All things being equal, I’d return here just because no one yelled at me."

Being a non-Chinese speaking Chinese person, I find it difficult navigating these places without my mom, especially when the counter folks are not so friendly. Definitely sounds like a place to try out!

White American Cheese - where to buy?

Saw a loaf (unsliced) of white american cheese at the Safeway in Novato. $7.99 per lb.

New Woey Loy Goey Restaurant -- amazing lobster with Cantonese (black bean / ginger) sauce [San Francisco]

Ah, Red's brings back memories. I used to hang out there when we were kids (parents were very social at the bar). This was back in the day when my dad knew almost everyone in Chinatown.

Ice Queen at the Marin San Rafael Sunday Farmer's Market

We were there this past Sunday as well, but left by 8:30am so probably would have missed the Ice Queen anyway. Where was she located? When you say "far end" I envision the arts and crafts section, or way in the corner by the knife sharpener and rotisserie cart?

The Southern Cafe, Oakland

Do you know if they're open for lunch? The other issue (besides wait times) used to be that they would be closed during posted "open" hours.

Wine Country review (mostly Yountville area)

Maybe I mis-read their paragraph on Bouchon, but it seemed like the only item that was "fair" was the sandwich, and they enjoyed everything else, so is it correct to say that Bouchon is slipping based on this report?

Breakfast Sandwich - SF Dish of the Month June 2013

Picked up the bagel breakfast sandwich at Beauty's Bagel Shop in Oakland. Chose "everything" bagel (I like the seeds); comes with scrambled egg and cheddar cheese for $4.91 including tax. Friendly service, and they open at 7am.

First time here. Bagel is on small side, but tasted good. (I like the seeds.) Not sure if bagels are good for breakfast sandwiches, though; the toasted bagel was too hard to cut with fork and knife (I ate it at work) so had to resort to picking up with my hands. Eggs were just a smidgeon overcooked, but prefer this to underdone.

Came with 3 sliced homemade pickles, unusual side to me (at breakfast).

Conclusion - Not a destination food item, but if I was driving past, I'd stop by and pick up another one.

===================

Side note: I noticed a sign that indicated they have poutine fries for $6, with mushroom gravy and cheese curds.

Dang Butterscotch Rootbeer

Wasn't going to go out of my way to get this, but being a Novatoan means I can't pass this up! Was this located along the back wall with the beers and such?

Gum Wah - Joong (sticky rice tamales) [Oakland]

Okay, not sure if I spelt it correctly, but it's the savory tamale in a pyramid like shape, wrapped in leaves?

Got one at Gum Wah for $2. The lady asked me if I wanted peanuts, I said yes, so there may be non-peanut options?

Didn't get a chance to eat it till the next day, but steamed in the microwave for a few minutes and to me, it's pretty good. Not enough duck egg to pass my dad's scrutiny (about 1/4) but the pork is moist and there are a few pieces of pork fat scattered throughout to keep it flavorful.

Old Chinese Hole-In-the-Wall on Embarcadero in SF?

Glad you liked Chung King. We always go here for our CNY dinner. Tina, the owner, is very flexible and accomodating. (For example, we order the stuffed rice chicken WITHOUT shrimp, for my non-seafood eating DH and MIL.)

Looks like Breakfast Sandwich didn't get the top number of votes, but coincidentally, here's a post in SF weekly on top 5 sandwiches:

My Pau Pau's first name was Pearl, although I don't know her Chinese name. She had a dog named Lucky that got all the roast beef leftovers. :)

Just out of curiousity, why would the soup spoon be at the bottom of the bowl? Isn't it kinda messy to get to spoon to eat?

Thanks. I prefer steamed, kids like baked (and as noted previously, baked buns freeze well and defrost nicely in school lunches by noon.)

Best / new dim sum in Oakland & surrounds?

Wanted to give another "shout out" for the service at Saigon Seafood. Have always had great service there; once when the rice rolls came around and I asked what kind they had (shrimp, char siu, etc.) but they didn't have beef. Said it would come around eventually, so we went back to eating what was on our table. A few minutes later, a server brought over a plate of rice rolls filled with beef - that was great!

One other story that isn't quite so much about the service but the quickness. Younger son is quite impatient (not sure who he gets that from, ahem...) and when the four of us walked into the restaurant when it opened on a Sat morning, he grumbled that it would take awhile to get food.

As we walked up to our table, there were two carts nearby. I asked and received about 4-5 plates/baskets of food, so the boys were able to eat as soon as they sat down! Younger son was quite happy about this.

BAKED Cha siu bao - Oakland

Thanks, all - I go to Ruby King for their don tots and totally didn't clue in that they have baked buns as well.

Word to parents - these usually freeze well and if you put them in your kids' lunch bags, will defrost by lunchtime. :)
