Mason Jars: To boil or not to boil

Thank you, CanadaGirl! My thoughts were along those same lines, too, but I questioned my logic. Since I've never canned before, I thought there might be something about that glass that required boiling. I am VERY happy to hear that isn't the case.

I'll just run them through the dishwasher for a good cleaning, then fill them with cupcakes.

Thanks again!

Mason Jars: To boil or not to boil

Greetings from Texas!

I'd like to make some holiday treats using mason jars, and I'm wondering if the jars have to be boiled first. Any thoughts?

To be more specific, I'd like to try two things. First, I'd like to layer cupcakes pieces and icing in jars. Second, I'd like to try baking cupcakes inside the jars.

I've seen several pictures of both, but none of the instructions explain if boiling the jars is necessary. Of course, I'll wash them; I just don't know if I need to boil them.

Thank you!
