Is there any decent NY style Pizza in OC?
Hey Kevin, I've only tried this pizza once and I think they may have made a mistake with my order. The pizza didn't seem to have any mozzarella, just Romano/Parmesan cheese. Is that typical of Pina's pizza?
Is there any decent NY style Pizza in OC?
I like the pizza at A Slice of New York in Seal Beach, but It may have gone down a bit. Last time i was there, I think there was a new owner.

So it's been open for 5 years or so? Hope to hear from some New Yorkers. Although I have to admit this pizza isn't my favorite pizza, it is authentic East Coast stuff. That's why I was impressed by this place...a neighborhood joint that is so hard to find.
OC Review: SUSHI 5, “Sushi so Fresh it’s Still Moving“
As the OP, This place is no longer a place I frequent.

kevin, As far as not being memorable, I kind of agree with you in that anything but the cheese pizza is good but not great. The cheese pizza shines. I think I'll edit my post to reflect that.

Is there any decent NY style Pizza in OC?
irishkevbo,
I've searched high and low for good pizza in OC, and came up with a very short list. I posted on Chowhound a long time ago, asking for good pizza recommendations in OC and tried quite a few, but came up short.
Finally...Can't believe I just discovered this place recently. Apparently it's been around for a few years.
This is by far and away the best in OC for New York style pizza, it's that authentic. One taste of this pizza is going to make you smile. Cheese pizza is the best pizza there. Would recommend trying it first. They don't have the 900 degree coal ovens, so oddly enough the slices that are reheated/crisped again in the oven, are better than the fresh pies out of the oven.
EDIT: Please note that CHEESE PIZZA is what to order here. The other pizzas are good, but very much pale in comparison to the cheese pizza.
It's in the same shopping center as Trader Joe's and Sport Chalet.

Was going to write a review on this find, when I saw your post. I haven't posted on Chowhound in a long time, but felt this was actually newsworthy.
Finally, pizza the OC can brag about.
Fugu in OC?
roterror, In Japan fugu must be prepared by a licensed fugu chef. Don't know what the standards are here but I wouldn't risk it unless I reeeally trusted the source.
Thai Nakorn Opening Delayed
Bummer on the delay. Would appreciate any updates. Need my Thai fix, no pun intended.
Where can I find Ancho Chile Powder?
Sugar Jones, I'm pretty sure that Smart & Final carries ancho chili powder. New Mexico Chili powder also is very good.

Mochi Cream?
Naleiya, Trader Joe's carries mochi ice cream. I like the green tea the best. I think Costco sells them also.

Best OC Prime Rib Dinner for $14.99 or Less?
bagdoodle, I still remember eating at Chris' and Pitts' as a kid and got hooked on their sweet BBQ sauce. I can't believe that I haven't been there in maybe 13-15 years. It sounds like the prime rib is really good. By the way, what a massive pastrami sandwich! Thanks for the description too, I might have to avoid the cholesterol though. What cut is the baseball steak?
What's the best place for lunch in Westminster/Garden Grove
I like Seafood Cove also, excellent salt and pepper shrimp. Chinese brocoli with oyster sauce or Chinese brocoli sauteed is a nice mustardy spinach-like vegetable that is popular. Pea shoots/sprouts are also tasty but tend to be a bit heavy on the oil, except at Seafood Paradise. Across the street from Seafood Cove is Seafood Paradise for dim sum, the shrimp wontons, shu mai, shrimp in seaweed and har gow are popular. They also have a lunch menu. A good bet at almost any chinese restaurant is shrimp with asparagus.
The $1.99 Restaurant (Vietnamese) has some surprisingly good selections. The most popular item there is the fried chicken which is a half a cornish game hen deep fried. It comes with an interesting sauce that grows on you if you give it a chance. Chicken is a bit overcooked but tasty. Avoid the fish here but the bun is pretty decent, the stir fried noodles and noodle soups are ok also.
Brodard restaurant and Brodard Chateau (upscale) are very good Vietnamese restaurants. For me the noodle soups are not their strong point. The Nem Nuong Cuon spring rolls are the signature dish here.
In the asian mall is Pho 79. People seem to like the pho here but its a bit over spiced (not hot spicy, but savory spicy) for me. The mi egg noodle soup is excellent. My favorite is the mi with wontons and pork, very nice broth with bits of roasted garlic and all kinds of different goodies.

notmartha, Sounds like a good offer. I second justagthing's "where do you find the coupons?"
Best OC Prime Rib Dinner for $14.99 or Less?
OCAnn, I've never been there. From what I gather on the net, Hungry Bear, is a bit like a family owned Sizzler? This sounds like a steak place in Santa Barbara that a friend took me to when we were both starving students. Cheap steaks, very chewy and generous servings, perfect for starving students with strong healthy jaws and big appetites. Hungry Bear seems to be fairly popular according to the reviews I've read. I'm curious enough to try it out if I'm in the area. Thanks for the tip.

Didn't hear that he died. I bet he had some great stories to tell. I'm going to have to try the $9.95 prime rib sometime soon and hopefully live music to boot.
Best OC Prime Rib Dinner for $14.99 or Less?
torta basilica, I'm ecstatic to hear that Sid's is still around. I used to go to the old Sid's off Old Newport when I lived there and I though they'd just gone out of business. The old place was really a kick. The consumate hole in the hole in the wall, if there is such a thing. Old Sid's wasn't known for fine dining but it sure had character. Thanks for the tip.
Best OC Prime Rib Dinner for $14.99 or Less?
kingkong5, their website says Sunset Special Roasted Prime Rib and Garlic Mashed Potatoes goes for $15.95. They do have a great view there, that counts for a lot.

Mr. S, That's a nice secret tip for aged beef.
Best OC Prime Rib Dinner for $14.99 or Less?
OK Hounds I was just thinking the other day that there has to be some really good prime rib in OC that won't break the wallet. I just don't know of any good prime rib dinners for $14.99 or less except (don't stone me!) Lonestar Restaurant's earlybird. The prime rib isn't aged, at least I can't tell if it is, but it's always roasted perfectly, nicely seasoned and tender. The salad is fresh and simple, the sweet rolls are warm and the baked potato or baked sweet potatos are terrific. Service is always good there too, no bad attitudes, always hospitable. The dinner also comes complete with a softdrink or milk for $13.99.
Anyway that's my nomination for the category of "Best OC Prime Rib Dinner for $14.99 or Less". Hopefully there are others...and the nominees are...?
Dim Sum in Orange County?
I agree to a certain extent that fresher is much better, especially for steamed foods where sitting food will get oversteamed, overcooked and bland. I can tell you as far as my experience at Ten Ten is concerned, that the food sitting too long wasn't the reason that I would not go back. The seaweed wrapped pork and shrimp was reeeaally fishy and the shrimp balls genuinely tasted like fish sticks. I try to give accurate descriptions of the food I eat and not just give my preference personal good or bad, because everyone has different tastes. That's why I described the shu mai as roughly ground. Hopefully the har gow is much better when fresher, I just can't see going back when there is Seafood Palace and China Garden close by.
Joe Josts Long Beach
I've seen the t-shirts and wondered how this place was. Will have to try Joe's special.
"Mini" Marukai now open in Torrance
Interesting concept. Hopefully they'll open one in Orange County other than the full sized Costa Mesa store. I love these kind of places.
Sushi Wasabi, Tustin, in Photos
Thanks for the review and photos, my mouth is watering.
good eats in ORANGE, CA (not OC, but the actual CITY of ORANGE)
Hadn't been to Todai in Orange in two years. Last time it wasn't bad, kind of medium (for a sushi buffet). Decided to use a two for one and try it out again. It seems to have gone downhill as far as the quality of the fish (again, even for a sushi buffet). The tuna was blinding BRIGHT PINK, oooh my eyes! very grainy (not frozen correctly) and a bit fishy. There wasn't any yellowtail, except something called austratian yellowtail which was more like red snapper. Anyway, just wanted to give the heads up to fellow hounds that this location has gone downhill. I'll have to stick with full service sushi bars and revolving sushi bars. By the way, the bill came to $33 including tax and tip with one free meal.
