Trip Report - Tokyo

Second was at Sushiya IchiYanagi also @ Ginza. A more traditional meal with a lunch Omakase set about USD120 per head for 15 pieces.

In this meal, less empahsis on preparation but more on ingredients so less cooking and grilling . Ikura and uni was some of the best I have ever eaten and the chef was at great pains to explain that they only sourced the best of the best. No complaints. Similar I would say in style to Kanaseka. Overall meal balance was I think better at Kanaseka given the similar styles.

Trip Report - Tokyo

Managed to score lunch at 2 Sushiya's on my recent New Years trip.

First was Sushiko Honten @ Ginza. We were lucky to be served by the owner Sugiyama-san who offered us a special lunch menu as opposed to a sushi omakase set. In a word, it was an incredible meal with styles and textures I had never experienced. Rice was al dente and warm. Good attention was paid to sizing for the female members of the group as well. I would consider this an excellent meal! price per pax was about USD250/- per head including sake and beer

Ok, time to make the reservations.

So maybe a little more specific in terms of request.

Staying in Shiodome. So somewhere in the Shinbashi/Ginza area would be best.
Looking for Sushi Lunch on 29 Dec and 30 Dec.
8 pax each time
Budget US150/- pax for one meal US250/- for another.

Cheaper recommendations always welcome.

On that note, I really enjoy eating good fresh uni. Any uni specific restaurants come to mind to try?

Will head to Jumbo for their Beef

Looking for a good Sukiyaki recommendation as well.

Thanks!

Staying at Hong Kong, Central for 4 days. Reccomendations?

Ok what's a good place to go to for some good big juicy mantis prawns ( pissing prawns?)
Near central would be good

Staying at Hong Kong, Central for 4 days. Reccomendations?

My main focus is for dim sum. But anything else of interest?
I will be staying near Sheung Wan statiojn

Trying to avoid tourist traps. Going with wife who was born in HK so communication is not a problem but she has not lived there for over 2 decades so no clues on whats good.

Thanks!

Something different! Group Dining.

Lots of threads on fine dining and Sushi.

Are there any suggestions of good dining locations for groups from 6-10 people?

Not asking for Michelin starred joints but really places with good solid tummy rubbing food which can entertain groups and offer food that is communal in nature ie tabletop bbq etc.

Staying in Shinjuku for 4 days end April.

Sushi Kanaseka @ Ginza

Managed a lunch booking at 11.30am for my first high end Sushi dining experience.

Had the 18 piece Omakase set @ YEN15,000
It was for me an eye opener as the individuality of the pieces was not something i was used to. Rice was beautifully al dente and the fish was beautifully paired subtle condiments and sauces;and to sum it up made subsequent sushi at run of the mill sushi bars seem uninteresting.

Staying in Shinjuku for 4 days end April.

Daiwa Sushi @ Tsukiji Market
As usual Sushi Dai queue was ridiculous so Daiwa it was.
I always ea at least once here in the market cos I like the atmosphere. Daiwa is as often said pretty decent if somewhat overpriced but its like comfort food to me. Omakase @ approx USD 45 per pax.

Positive Imbalance @ Nakameguro

1st up had excellent Japanese fusion in a casual counter restaurant in Nakameguro a 2 min from the station.

Dishes were heavily Japanese in nature with a hint of italian influence focusing mainly on seasonal produce.

Chef is Japanese previously working in California. Nice guy who chats with you through dinner. Menu was Omakase as I had no clue but it was one of the better meals I have had in this style with some items like the baby squid sashimi being a first for me and the beef from his home town in Kobe a real treat.

I paid a little over YEN17,000 for 3pax with about 14 courses which I felt was cheap. Its alittle off the traditional beaten path but well worth it.

Restaurant has about 10 counter seats and seats another 10 in tables and I noticed had a private room in the back. IMO the counter was the best place to be as the whole kitchen is infront of you.

Very possibly though I can't be certain as I did not see an english name. Its in the basement and seats 5 tucked away in a corner of the basement. It was a quick 5 minute stop but fish was fresh and rice was just nice warm.

Sorry not familiar with the photo posting system yet.

First pic above. Went to some place in a building in Ginza for some uber priced shabu shabu/sukiyaki. Receipt attached but don' know the name of the place. Food was good but IMO overpriced.

Second pic is the seafood bowl in the seafood market in Sapporo. Its very small compared to Tsukiji but very cosy and the shop was recommended by one of the safood vendors. Corner shop facing the road.

Last pic was just from the small sushi counter in the basement of Mitsukoshi in Ginza. Probably the best I managed to eat on this trip.

Apologies on this as this was largely a no-go. Market was largely closed and Sushizanmai honten was packed to the brim. Did manage to eat there but I think the crowds may have impacted the quality as it was mediocre at best.

Did manage to visit the Meiji Shrine and eat at the stalls on the grounds which was less then gourmet but quite acceptable for what it was.

It was largely still enjoyable as a trip but the food was mainly ad-hoc and whatever was open and did not have a queue.

I would hence in general not recommend not having a food trip around that time if one can help it in Tokyo.

Another year is moving fast and I am planning another trip to Hokkaido at the year end stopping over in Tokyo fro 3-4 nights. This time I am looking to be there from 28th Dec to 31Dec (inclusive)

What are the dining options for a good sushi joint. Looking to do one medium priced and one high end.

Oh and the ability to fit a group of 6 to 8 would be nice.

Previously managed Tsukiji Outer market (including Daiwa) and Sushi Kanesaka in Ginza.

I am thinking about dropping by this place for lunch when I am in Tokyo in early January.

Any comments or reviews?

Also would I need to make reservations for a party of 10?

Thanks!

Hi All, I know this has been posted before but some of the thread relating to the questionare little old and wondering if anything has changed?

Basically I will be in Tokyo from Jan 1-5 2013 and then head to Sapporo for a day before hitting the slopes in Niseko.

I know most departmental stores will be open and Tsukiji Mkt will be closed.
How about the eateries in the outer market like Sushizanmai?

Given that I land at 6am on Jan 1st, what would be a good recommendation for brekkie if I'm staying in the Otemachi/Tpkyo station area?

Would the dining area in Ueno be open at night?

Thanks for the help!
