Where to find Zhongzi (Ba Zhang)?

Where can I buy ba zhang (otherwise known as zhongzi)? I would prefer to buy it in the northwest Chicago suburbs, but if I can't find it there, where can I find it in the city (e.g. grocery store or restaurant)? This is a sticky rice dumpling which is wrapped in a leaf (e.g. bamboo).

Most almond-y dessert?

Chinese Almond Cookies. See http://www.simplyrecipes.com/recipes/.... You can also make Amaretti cookies.

This is not really a dessert, but a breakfast dish. I like making Grand Marnier french toast covered in sliced almonds. I cover the french toast with almonds and the nuts toast when I flip the french toast over and cook it in my cast iron pan.

ISO light lemon cake recipe

I had a lemon cake from a French bakery which was really good. It was a vanilla spongecake with lemon mousse and it was covered in lemon marmalade. I don't see many cake recipes which use marmalade, though.

I have made a lemon cake before which contained buttercream and lemon curd, but found it a bit heavy. I would like to try making something lighter this time. Any suggestions?

Good Vietnamese food in the suburbs?

Can anyone recommend a good Vietnamese restaurant in the Chicago suburbs? Northwest suburbs is preferable, but would drive up to 45 min. to go to a better restaurant.

First trip to Chicago

I think that Al's Italian Beef has better Italian beef than Portillo's. The benefit of Portillo's, though, is that you can have both an Italian beef sandwich and a Chicago style hotdog at one location. For deep dish sausage pizza, I vote for Lou Malnati's. (I go to Gino's East for the spinach pizza). You might want to stop by Navy Pier (http://www.navypier.com/).

Lake Zurich/Barrington, IL - restaurants?

I tried the Sake Sushi and Grill two times. The sushi is inexpensive compared to other places. The rice has a tendency to fall apart in the sushi. I would go back, though, because it is a good value. I thought that the sushi at Daruma Restaurant in Schaumburg was better. (I recommend the Chirashi Sushi). The restaurant also offers Japanese tapas-style appetizers in the menu. Here is the menu: http://www.facebook.com/DarumaRestaur...

ISO pineapple lemon pie recipe

I have relatives who do not like to eat anything which is too sweet. They are Asian. Does anyone have a good recipe which they would like to recommend which contains pineapple and lemon jello? I lost the recipe which I used to make. It contained crushed pineapple, lemon jello, and cream cheese. I plan to make a graham cracker crust for the pie.

marble cake recipe?

How do you convert a bundt pan recipe to a layer pan recipe? Does a normal cake pan take longer than a bundt pan? Does the cake taste better when it is baked in a bundt pan, or is it only a matter of presentation?

marble cake recipe?

I am searching for a marble cake recipe (for 9'' round pans). Any suggestions? I would prefer to make a layer cake as opposed to a pound cake. The cake will have some kind of chocolate frosting.

Chinese / Taiwanese Restaurants in Greater Chicago Area

Yesterday we ordered the following at Katy's Dumpling House: Potsticker, Dan Dan Noodle, Combo Fried Noodle with hot pepper (not on the online English menu), honey walnut shrimp, and fish fillet with spicy bean paste & tofu.

The waitress recommended the beef noodle soup, the Korean noodle soup, Dan Dan Noodle, and the fish fillet with spicy bean paste & tofu. The best dish which we ordered was the fish fillet dish. All the dishes were good. If you can read Chinese, they have a menu in Chinese (which appears to contain dishes which are not on the English menu). On the English menu, I did not see yiou-tiao, but the table next to us ordered that dish. It is probably on the Chinese menu.

If you are in the northwest suburbs of Chicago, you might want to consider going to Yu's Mandarin (in Schaumburg) or Chef Ping in Rolling Meadows. I think that the chef at Chef Ping's came from Yu's Mandarin. A lot of the dishes tastes the same at the two restaurants. My favorite dish at Yu's Mandarin is Noodle Platter. The noodle platter contains homemade noodles and a lot of seafood. At Yu's I also really like the Eight Treasure Tofu Pot dish (from the Traditional Chinese menu).

Chinese / Taiwanese Restaurants in Greater Chicago Area

I am meeting my Taiwanese relatives at Katy's Dumpling house for lunch next weekend. I hear that they have a good beef tendon noodle soup. We had a couple of really good noodle dishes and an excellent walnut shrimp dish. Here is a link to a long thread on this restaurant:

I live too far from Katy's Dumplings to buy the frozen dumplings.

It seems like International Mall has been getting more and more run down over the years. It is a hole-in-the-wall type of place. I used to work in the mall. The only restaurant I thought was worth going to was Chinese Cafe. Back then, the cafe was only open on weekends. I don't know their hours these days.

Try Katy's Dumpling House in Naperville or Westmont if you are in the western suburbs. Here is their menu: http://katysdumpling.com/Katys_Dumpli...

Lake Zurich/Barrington, IL - restaurants?

For a steakhouse place, I second the recommendation of Stoney River. The coffee-cured filet mignon is really good.

For lunch, I also recommend D&J Bistro (which is in Lake Zurich). The food is consistently great. I have been to this restaurant around 10 times (for both lunch and dinner). You can order ala carte' or go with their lunch prix fixe specials: http://www.dj-bistro.com/lunchspecial....
