IHOP - What to order and what to skip?

I always get the Harvest Grain and Nut Pancakes. Their bacon is good too if you order it crispy.

Stacy's Smokehouse -- is it any good?

They have a new location in Scottsdale (Shea/Scottsdale Rd., in the old KFC location), and there's a deal today on Eversave (which I've never heard of till today) for $10 worth of bbq for $4. I know they have been around for a few years in their Phx location, which I've never tried.

Can anyone recommend it?

Ft. Lauderdale - ISO great fried chicken, baby back ribs & ice cream! (Not necessarily at the same place!)

Just back from our trip, and wanted to post some of our finds.

First night, had dinner at Tom Jenkins BBQ. Wow. Those were some of the best baby backs I have had in a long time. Not fall-off-the-bone tender, but full of flavor and lots of yummy crispy edges. Great sauce, too. I also loved their mac & cheese, and fantastic corn muffins. I'll definitely go back on my next trip.

Second night, had dinner at Betty's Soul Food. This was a disappointment. I ordered the fried chicken and it was dry. I ordered the mac & cheese and yams as sides, and they were very mediocre, and both were served at room temp - not even slightly warm. Their corn muffins were also just fair - not very flavorful and mushy from being held in a steamer for who knows how long.

Had ice cream one night at Kilwin's on Las Olas, it was good but not great. Much better ice cream at Frieze (Plantation location) - fantastic chocolate and mint chip.

Dinner our last night was at Jaxson's . . . yes, I know I said in an earlier post that they were pricey, and they were, but it was a fun atmosphere, great hot dogs (and some of the best fries I've had in a long time), and good ice cream. And now that I've been there once, I don't need to go back.

We had a good lunch one day at Primanti Brothers, I had the pastrami sandwich and it was tasty.
Another "now that I've tried it, I don't need to go back." But man that place is a gold mine, what a great location and open 24/7.

Yesterday on the way to the airport we had lunch at Lester's Diner, I had an excellent tuna melt. I wanted to get there for breakfast one day but for some reason my GPS couldn't find it based on the address (I had better luck yesterday by plugging in the name).

Thanks for all the recommendations, we had some really good food thanks to you guys!

New potatoes -- in the microwave instead of boiling?

I plan to make Pioneer Woman's crash hot potatoes tonight but I'll be strapped for time when I get home from work, and want to eliminate the whole bring-pot-of-water-to-boil and boil-till-tender steps. Can little new (red) potatoes be successfully microwaved? for anyone not familiar w/ the crash hot potatoes recipe, I do need to keep the potatoes whole, rather than cutting them up (which I know would speed up the microwaving process).

Italian food for a bunch of 8 year olds...

You could do spaghetti and meatballs. I have an 8 year old and he loves meatballs (and I buy the big bag of frozen Kirkland meatballs from Costco).

NFNS 6/26/11 spoilers

Same here . . . also recorded it twice (my guide showed it was an hour show) and missed the ending. It was an hour and a half, so I'll be recording it yet a third time!

That's so strange that some people had to select a specific location while others did not. I just printed mine and, below "redeem at," it lists all 3 locations.

Not true . . . it says good at all locations, and I purchased one and was not asked to select a location.

ooooh, Kilwins! I grew up in Michigan and whenever I'd go up north, I'd have to stop at Kilwin's for their Mackinac Island Fudge ice cream. I found a Kilwins in Sarasota years ago -- totally forgot they were in FL. Thanks!

Marie Callenders closed up

All the AZ locations have closed, too. That's a bummer. I hope their frozen pies will continue to be available.

Your Favorite Manufacturers' Recipes...

Here you go . . . enjoy!

Creamette's Lasagna

1/2 pound uncooked lasagna noodles

1 lb bulk Italian sausage
1/2 pound ground beef
1 cup chopped onions
2 garlic cloves, minced
1-28 oz can whole tomatoes, cut up (undrained)
2-6 oz cans tomato paste
2 tsp sugar
2 tsp salt
1-1/2 tsp dried basil
1/2 tsp fennel seed
1/4 tsp black pepper

1-15 oz container ricotta cheese
1 egg, beaten
1 TB dried parsley flakes
1/2 tsp salt
4 cups (1 lb) shredded mozzarella cheese
3/4 cup grated parmesan cheese

Preheat oven to 375 F.

Prepare noodles according to package directions; drain.

In large skillet, combine sausage, ground beef, onion and garlic. Cook till sausage is no longer pink and onion is tender; drain. Stir in next 7 ingredients (tomatoes through black pepper). Bring to boil; reduce heat, and simmer 20 minutes uncovered, stirring occasionally.

In medium bowl, blend ricotta, egg, parsley and salt.

Spoon 1-1/2 cups meat sauce into 9 x 13 pan. Layer 1/3 each of the noodles, remaining meat sauce, ricotta mixture, mozzarella cheese and parmesan cheese. Repeat layers twice (three layers total). Cover with greased foil (so cheese doesn't stick to foil).

Bake in preheated oven for 25 minutes, then uncover and bake for an additional 20 minutes or until hot and bubbly. Let stand 10 minutes before serving.

Serves 8-10.

good bbq (PHX)

I noticed this morning that Big Daddy's BBQ at 101/Shea is gone -- not sure how long ago it closed up. I never tried it but always planned to.

Casual but good near Treetops golf resort [Gaylord, MI]

It's been probably 11 or 12 years since I was last in Gaylord, but I recall having a few good meals at the "turkey" restaurant in town -- it may have been called Gobbler something? It was always packed, and seemed to be very popular.

New Trader Joe's Yea/Nay Thread - 2nd Quarter 2011 [old]

A few recent nays:

Tarte de Aslance (? - I threw away the box so I am sure i'm butchering the name) - was sadly disappointed in this. I'm not sure what didn't work for me, the crust, the cheese, the onions or the ham, but it just didn't.

Milk chocolate covered peanut butter eggs -- someone else posted on this thread that these were superior to Reese's pb eggs. I completely disagree -- TJ's had way too much chocolate and not enough peanut butter.

Reduced fat mac & cheese -- The only reason the calories and fat are so low is b/c the portion size is so small! I had it for lunch yesterday and seriously it was gone after about 6 spoonfuls.

thanks -- but I am looking for Ft. Lauderdale.

Restaurant in central Phoenix w/ space for 50-100 & appetizers?

I thought of them but their space isn't large enough for 100.

Restaurant in central Phoenix w/ space for 50-100 & appetizers?

Looking for a restaurant (or some other venue that doesn't involve bringing in a caterer) that has a private room for an event for 50-100 people, in the central Phoenix or Biltmore area. It would be in late September, in the evening, and we're looking to do appetizers.

What I have come up with so far is University Club, McCormick & Schmick's, and Seasons 52.

Any and all suggestions would be appreciated!

What are you recommending at Rustic Inn?

Looked at the menu at Jaxson's -- wow, they are very pricey!

Anyone else?

Ft. Lauderdale - ISO great fried chicken, baby back ribs & ice cream! (Not necessarily at the same place!)

We're staying 2 nights pre-cruise and 1 night post-cruise in Ft. Lauderdale at the end of July and are looking for the best fried chicken and bbq (preferably baby backs) and great ice cream. Any and all recommendations appreciated!

Mimi's Cafe - your favorites!

Love love love their pumpkin pancakes, which are available seasonally starting mid- to late-October. I also love their pain perdu (sp.) - french toast stuffed w/ cream cheese and orange marmalade. I'll get that if it's not pumpkin pancake season.

Corned beef in the crockpot?

I'd love to make a corned beef for St. Paddy's Day dinner but I don't get home from work till almost 6pm and have a hungry 8-yo son who is STARVING TO DEATH, so fast is key. Has anyone successfully made one in the crockpot? Any tips?

Least appetizing food ads?

While this isn't a food "ad," the photos that accompany the recipes in every Penzey's catalog are so completely unappetizing -- everything has an orange glow, whether or not it should.
