Recommendation for the Concord, NC area

Kathleen is dead on with her Cabarrus Creamery recommendation. I love their moonpie icecream - they always have interesting concoctions. While you're there, pick up a glass bottle of our local soda, Cheerwine while you're there (it's a cherry cola).

For the full Concord experience, start out at the What A Burger & get a WAB, fries (crinkle) and a soda. The soda is where it gets interesting. My fave is the C-LSD, cherry lemon Sundrop (Sundrop a lemon line soda, made by the same local outfit as Cheerwine). They mix Sundrop w cherry soda and add sliced lemons. If you want the full Concord go for broke experience, order a Witchdoctor- a mix of all fountain drinks poured over a fist full of dill pickle chips.

Oh, and Lil Roberts Place next to the Cabarrus creamery has an excellent draft selection-many local. And the owners are really helpful / they offer samples based on what you're in the mood for.

WAB, Cabarrus Creamery & Lil Roberts are all on the same block.

If you're into coffee, you MUST check out the S&D retail store. Their coffee is great, cheap & local (S&D is the famed stuff that Dunkin Donuts brews).

Ballantyne Area in Charlotte

QCmama- I'm way on the other side of town but make special trips to the Ballantyne area for Zatouni - it's Lebanese. It's not fancy but the food and the service is always great. It's in the same shopping center as Earthfare. Also, Bangkok Ocha (Thai) next to Fresh Market on 51 is great. Musashi (Japanese) on Johnston is great for bento boxes, noodles & sushi. It's where Japanese businessmen who are visiting town go do dine. A little further out in Ayrsley Village on 485 & Tryon is Saffron Indian. The best Indian food Charlotte's seen in years.

Best Part of Town for Foodies

Hey yall! I'll be in Atlanta for the first weekend in Feb to see a show at The Tabernacle. We'll probably hit the aquarium & High Museum and then check out the farmer's market, as well. So since we'll be running all over town, I'm thinking of booking a hotel based on great dining choices? I was going to stay near the Tabernacle, but it's been clearly stated on here that downtown doesn't have the best dining choices. We'd be looking for interesting ethnic, esp your great Szechaun choices or any interesting / upscale places.

Recommendations around Independence Boulevard in Charlotte?

I tried Macchu Picchu and was not impressed at all. In that area, Azteca has great Mexican, especially the Chef's Specials section (Don Juan Special, Pollo Con Crema, Camarones Mexicanos, all are excellent dishes). Angela's Italian is on Margaret Wallace, just off Independence (there's a thread floating around full of well-deserved raves for the place. Their vodka sauce is wonderful.). Also Picadeli's is a great deli that serves draft beer (The Philadelphia, Buffalo Chicken Sandwich and the chili cheese fries are all great. The manager, George, is a sweetheart and loves to talk beer). Fortune Cookie III is in the same shopping center as the Super G and is a great choice for delivery (great honey chicken and crab rangoon). There's also a great Chinese place on Pineville Matthews Rd, just off of Independence, called Dynasty Cuisine (behind the Fudrucker's. This place offers Dim Sum on the weekends and also has some pretty spectacular Szechuan dishes). Hope this helps!

Where to get the best Shrimp and Grits in Charlotte

I agree w/ MizzDee, Dish is pretty great. Also, Lulu's has shrimp & grits for brunch (their pimento cheese grits are yummy too!). Unfortunately, I can't recommend Boudreaux. I used to love this place but, last Sunday brunch, I had their shrimp & grits from Boudreaux last weekend for brunch and I was picking twigs of dried herbs out of my teeth. The veggies were raw and everything tasted like oregano. The beignets were still good, though.

Good but affordable itallian in charlotte?

I'm in East Charlotte and I am thankful to have Angela's on my side of town. It's on Margaret Wallace, not far off of Independence. Their Penne a la vodka is wonderful, and any of their baked dishes are great - the ricotta is creamy and their marinara is wonderful. The have live music on the weekends and a nice little patio area. Not too expensive and I always end up w/ leftovers.

best online site to buy bitters?

I wish I had known! I just found this thread after falling in LOVE w/ Fee Bros rhubarb bitters I found in a local hipster market. Rhubarb bitters, Blenheim's hot ginger beer, bourbon and ice is the drink at my house this season!

Caputo 00 Flour in Charlotte, NC?

I've always had to order my Caputo 00 online from pennmac, along with KASL & all the rest of my pizza making ingredients. I've kept an eye out and not seen Caputo anywhere in the Charlotte or Chapel Hill area, unfortunately.

Looking for Charlotte Restaurants

Saffron is always veggie friendly. The Sunday buffet is monumental, btw. Normally they'll have a minimum of 3 veg offerings at one on the buffet: a pea-based, a paneer-based and a lentil-based dish on the buffet. Oh, and their ranch dressing always brings tears to my eyes, it's so delicious - I wonder if yogurt is the key?

Super G Market in Charlotte - Yeah!

I finally checked this out last weekend & wfell in love with the place. I came home with lots of fruit that I'd never treied fresh - lychee, korean mango, dragon fruit & sweet yellow mango (the mango was the best I've ever eaten). I also found Russian dumplings & Deep brand frozen indian food. The variety & the quality is amazing.

Now, where was the Mexican Coke located? I looked and didn't see any.

Looking for Charlotte Restaurants

I live in the 28212 area code, so maybe I be more helpful. Here are some suggestions:

Jake's Good Eats - my favorite restaurant in town. The staff epitomize Southern hospitality and the food is AMAZING. Try the fried oysters. One note, they use cherry tomatoes on a lot of their dishes that are so flowery and vibrant you'd swear they were grown in a field of lavender.

Picadeli's Pub has sandwiches and draft beer. The wait staff is really nice and the food is pretty great. Check out the Greek grilled cheese w/ added bacon.

Azteca is a great Mexican place. Order anything from the chefs's specialties. The Pollo Con Crema and Pollo Poblano are great!

I'll be driving from Charlotte to Atlanta tomorrow and was wondering the same thing. I've already been to Honey Monk's, Allen and Son's, Stamey's, Bridges, Sweatman's and Keatons. Just wondering if there are any bbq destinations along 85 bet. Charlotte and Atlanta that can't be missed. Thanks, y'all!

Ithaca/Elmira Area NY Local Specialties?

We'll be driving through Elmira, Watkins Glen and Ithaca during the 4th of July weekend and I'd like to bring home a cooler of local goodies. We are hoping to find s good local butcher and bring back some great local sausages/hot dogs (we only have skinless hot-dogs in the South). Any suggestions on some great local butchers?

Also looking for any other great local delicacies to pick up. We'l l probably pick up some fruit and local jams from the Ithaca farmer's market on Sat morning, as well.

Thanks, ya'll!

Goood Food on Montford - Charlotte

Finally went to “Good Food” on Montford on Saturday night. The space is nice, though the exposed brick wall had my husband making a sour face. I had to roll my eyes at the horrid bar lighting (spot pendants surrounded by a frame of forks and spoons). The décor was a little raw, but nothing compared to the service.

We were asked by 3 different people how many in our party and to please wait. The 3rd person (who ended up being our waitress) finally directed to sit at the bar after we had been standing in the doorway for an awkward 5 minutes or so. After about another 3-5 minutes, a bartender appeared and asked if we were waiting for a table. Dh said yes but that we’d like to start w/ drinks. We were asked if we wanted to start a tab, which annoyed my dh b/c we both assumed that the drinks should be added to our bill since we just told her we’d be moving to the dining room shortly. Maybe she just wasn't paying any attention when he answered her. Either way, very awkward. My dh paid for the drink at the bar since she'd brought it up for some bizarre reason. We order 2 beers, mine was a mess and we weren't offered bar napkins. I reached down the bar to grad some napkins and and leaned my shirt into beear puddle. Niice. We were not offered menus either, which elevated me to po'ed.

We were told that our table was ready and so we walk our 3/4 glasses of beer to our table and were provided menus. Water comes soon after, along w/ oil & balsamic plate and small plate of roasted garlic. Bread comes much much later, right before 1st ordered items are delivered, in fact. The waitress apologizes and gives us double bread, just as I was telling my husband that I’d rather have the oil and vin plate, garlic plate and empty bread plate taken away to make room, since we were past the bread phase of dinner, anyway. Table was very tiny for a tapas table, btw.

We ordered 1)pork belly steamed bun-best dish of the night by far 2)corn fried oysters- oysters were pretty bland –my most disappointing dish of he night 3) cashew and shrimp pad thai – weird item for tapas, not conducive to sharing. Way too heavy on cashew, very off balance. Shrimp were nicely cooked. Lakced serious texture. 4)Venison carpaccio – dh was disappointed. Venison raw was bland. I tried letting it warm in my mouth, but that didn’t help. I just ended up w./ a mouthful of warm pland meat. 5)Foie gras –I thought it was weird that it was cold, dh said he thought it was frozen. It was hard, like frozen butter. Again, had to let food incubated ion my mouth to get any flavor. Toast points were very charred w/ a large crumb and defeated foie gras texture, so much so that the roof of my mouth was scratched raw. 6)Ordered corn spoon bread – kitchen was out. Subbed crispy marscapone polenta. Came coated in thick, poungent balsamic reduction (looked it was coated in hoison). Had to cut balsamic off vinegar and half a dish was wasted. Polenta was unremarkable. 7)Marinated mushrooms were nice, w/ oil and garlic slivers and mushrooms. Portion was enormous, we tired of them and sent back half. Most dishes were simply okay, some were abysmal, one was outstanding. Lost of dishes were garnished w/ julienned green onion, which made things begin to feel one note. Many dishes were either bland or one item domianted a dish.

We ordered 7 dishes and were never offered a 2nd drink. Dh and I nursed the beers that we ordered at the bar thoughout the meal. We both drank water for the 2nd half of dinner. 7 dishes plus 2 beers came to about $90. Next time we’ll cut back to 5 dishes, probably. We’ll make sure to wait at least a month so that they work some of the serious kinks out.

Bridal shower suggestions in Charlotte

Pewter Rose, 300 East or LuLu's would be good, especially if she does a Sunday brunch. Lunch and esp. breakfast dishes would end up being much less expensive.

And an earlier party would likely mean less of a bar bill (-_^)
