Has anyone ever eaten purslane?
We cook it with some veg oil, onions and tomatoes, tomato paste and vegetable stock, s&p, and towards the end of cooking we add some rice and let it sit for a while. Then eat it as a main course with a dollop of plain yogurt.
It is my most favourite vegetable; in spring summer time, I scour the Union sqr mkt every week to get my weekly fix :)
Red Lentils in NYC
Whole Foods has the Arrowhead Mills brand and also their house kind.
looking to buy some le creuset - what sizes will i use the most? [Moved from Home Cooking board]
I got a 3.5 qt oval casserole and I am in love with it. It is enough for 4-6 people and so easy to move around. I guess it depend on how many people you usually cook for. When I use mine I usually have enough left overs to freeze in single servings and makes my life much easier.
What Are Your Favorite Grocery Store Items?
Liberte - Plain yoghurt - 2.5% i think - my absolute favourite yogurt in this country
Kashi Go Lean Cereal
Vermonth Butter & Co Creme Fraiche
Nutella
D L Jardine's Jalapeno Mustard (I used to get it when I travelled to Texas, can't find it in NYC)
Applegate Farms Herbed or Black Pepper Turkey Breast
Michael Pollan - In Defense of Food
I love Nestle's What To Eat too. It took me a while to read it; and I find myself going back to it from time to time. Nestle's style is very straightforward, but she makes her point across so clearly. I haven't read the Omnivore's Dilemma yet; but I can't wait to read it now that it is available on paperback.
Michael Pollan - In Defense of Food
You are right Chocolateninja, it was not on Fresh Air. It was on NPR Food on 1/03/08. I just checked and it is available as Podcast.
Sorry for any confusion :)
Michael Pollan - In Defense of Food
I watched it too and really enjoyed the whole program. It was also interesting to see that he kept talking about Marion Nestle's "What to Eat" book as the go-to book for reference. He was also on last week's Fresh Air on Public Radio.
2008--One New Recipe a Week
I just made the Kumquat Chicken Tagine for tonight and it was sooo good. I will make this recipe again for sure...
For anyone interested, the link is below:

I like the Eating Well mag; what I have tried so far have been good and not so labor intensive. I picked up the Cooking Light a couple of times, i also thought EW was much better.
Now I need to decide what will be my next new dish for the weekend :)
2008--One New Recipe a Week
I made Eating Well's Shrimp Chili Casserole with Cornbread recipe and it was delicious. It was really good! I am going to make it with chicken next time.
This week i am going to do the Kumquat Tagine from again Eating Well...
very exciting!
New Years Cooking and Food Resolutions!
I want to learn to make Indian food. So far I can only make some variations of simple yellow curry, but i love their vegetarian dishes and hopefully I will learn how to make them.
I also plan to register for some baking classes; i love baking (and eating what I bake :)

Vermont trip this weekend
Hello again..
Just a quick followup here.
We drove up there that weekend and we had a lovely time... Our plan proved to be too aggressive and we ended up doing half the things we planned.
We managed to go these places: Manchester; had breakfast at Up for Breakfast. Their pumpkin-walnut pancakes were yummy. Weston Country Store was impressive. Woodstock was such a beautiful town, we loved it. We had dinner at Starry Night Cafe and I have to say that was the highlight of my trip despite the not-so-hospitable Hostess. I had a goat cheese ravioli with tomatoes & baby greens; and grilled mahi mahi as main. Mahi mahi was served on a bed of greens, on the side was a raspberry jelly and some grains and vegetables. Absolutely amazing dish... Next morning we had breakfast at Magnolia and I had the Lime waffles with yogurt. It was ok, My friend had the Mexican omelet and it was delicious. They have such friendly service and good atmosphere.
We stopped by at the Cold Hollow Cider Mill and was very surprised to see how the cider was made. We had read about the Green Mountain Coffee Factory; we were excited to see some of the roasting processes etc, but when we went there it turned out to be just a coffeeshop with some interactive multimedia info about coffee and that was a dissapointment. It was even more dissapointing to see that they sold no freshly roasted coffee by the pound. They had only limited selection of 1-lb bags of some of their coffee.
We also went to City Market in Burlington to do some shopping and how great is that store... I wish we had one at where I live as well. Got a lot of chese etc from there... My friend and I loved how everyone was so friendly and also so athletic. We hope go back there next year for a 3-4 day trip.
Thanks again for all your recommendations!

Do you have any favourite orchard or would any of them be fine?
I love to bake and we will try to stop by at the King Arthur store.
Thanks!

Thank you soo much for all your recommendations. I guess I better start calling these places and try to make the reservations. I am very excited...
And I will report back for sure.
Vermont trip this weekend
Hello Fellow Chowhounders,
My friend and I are planning a short trip to VT from NYC this weekend to (hopefully) catch the last days of foliage. I searched this board and got some really great info.
Would you please have a look at my tentative itinerary and tell me if I missed any important food places/towns or if there is any place we should skip for this two-day visit:
1. Manchester - Skyline drive, Up for Breakfast
2. Weston - Vermont Country Store, Podunk
3. Ludlow - Inn at Waters Edge (there is a must-see VT pub?), Green Mountain Sugar Co.
4. Woodstock - Pylmouth Cheese Factory, Waterstock Buffalo Cheese Factory, Mill at Quechee Rest, hiking by the waterfalls
5. Middlebury - Otter Creek Brewery, Natural Food Co-op (possibly having dinner in this town)
6. Burlington - We are spending the night here.
The Northern Lights cruise, Ben&Jerry's (my friend is so into this), Magic Hat Brewing Co., Cheese Outlet, Cheese Traders, Church Str., Mt Mansfield for hiking
7. Mad River Valley / Waitsfield / Warren
I would prefer to go to places with a "real Vermont" feeling. I heard that The Starry Cafe is amazing, and I should eat Maple Creeme and Cider Donut.
And of course I will try to find Lazy Lady Goat Cheese, Jasper Farm Blue Cheese, Vermont Coulpole by VT Butter & Cheese Co., Woodchuck and Original Sin cider, Lake Champlain chocolates. So I have some shopping to do.
What am I missing here? I would love to hear your opinions.
Thanks so much for all your help!

GREEN BAGS TO PRESERVE FRESHNESS : DO THEY REALLY WORK?
I have been using a container I bought from Ikea, and I am very happy. I wash all my veggies first, then I put them in the container after everything is dry. I have had success with everything (I haven't tried tomatoes) including persian cucumbers (which usually gone bad in three days in the crisper).

What did you make for dinner tonight?
Last night I had a light dinner (orange-jicama salad) so I am going for a full meal tonight.. Tofu yellow curry and steamed thai black rice.
Bourdain: Love Him? Hate Him?
LOVE LOVE LOVE HIM!!!!! His shows are always very entertaining and educational. And he is a good writer...
Oh, and yes he is sexy!!!
Ice Cream Maker recommendations?
Oh, my Dad got the extra canister for $8 from Crate and Barrel. I am surprised you saw it for $30.
What's your crazy and fun ethnic snack? [moved from Manhattan board]
Roasted chickpeas - especially if they are spicy.. Turkish style.
Dried apricots
Dried figs filled with raw hazelnuts
Ice Cream Maker recommendations?
Sorry i meant to say ICE-20. The inexpensive model...That's the one he got.
Ice Cream Maker recommendations?
When my parents were visiting, they got the Cuisinart ICE-30. Since they left my Dad has been obsesses with it. He got an extra container as well, and he is extremely happy with every batch he makes...
Liberte Yoghurt - plus other groceries - where to get?
Yes, I haven't seen that flavor here. It does sound yummy.. Actually the last two times I went to WF, I couldn't find them there either. Now I am craving it :)
Liberte Yoghurt - plus other groceries - where to get?
I am addicted to Liberte youghurt as well.. I am in NYC and I get it from Whole Foods. They might have it in your area too. It is 2.99 here.
Foods you crave only once a year
Caramel apple cider from Starbucks when the temperature is below 30s...
Verdolagas? Help!
We make it many ways (I am from Turkey). My favourite way is verdolagas cooked with caramelized chopped onions, diced/pured tomato, s&p and some rice (just a little, added close to the end). My family also adds meat in it , but I prefer it without.
We also make a very simple meze/side dish/salad with it. We mix fresh cleaned coarsely chopped verdolagas with garlic yoghurt and serve it . Very simple and refreshing in summer.
Going "green" in the kitchen
In addition to the fabric grocery bag, I also got a few cotton mesh produce bags. When I go to the Farmer's market, I don't use any plastic produce bags anymore.
I don't take baths, I take quick showers. I try to save water wherever I can.
I changed all my lights, I use much less paper towels and napkins (still looking for he perfect fabric napkins)
I have been gradually changing all my cleaning supplies to green products and it has been difficult, as it is pretty costly. I got a lot of good ideas on this thread, though. I will certainly use them..
