What is the worst wedding reception dinner you've ever had?

I couldn't agree more. It was a second or third marriage for both and we had to drive eight hours and sit under 100 degree sun with no shade and stay out of the way of warring factions of blended families. It was a delight to place cash in the basket in the foyer.

Ha! I thought requesting cash was more of a Lancaster, California redneck thing

Costly culinary tools that you own that don't get much use, or that have caused you buyers remorse.

An electric tortilla press/cooker. Not good.

Traveling to Puerto Rico - food questions

One travel trip: The ferry service from Fajardo to Vieques was mysteriously cancelled on the day of our travel so we had to fly which was a lot more expensive and but infinitely easier especially upon return to San Juan International. The concierge at the Conquistador Hotel was similarly clueless. Ugh!

Depressed and Lost Appetite

I just recently separated from my husband although we're not divorcing. I had no appetite for two weeks and lost a goodly amount of weight. As noted below, I tried to just eat the protein but soon those mashed potatoes with a roast were appealing and now I'm scarfing down everything in my sight!

Thanksgiving disaster!

We instituted a No Contact decision ourselves. It's amazing how cool and calm life is without in law interference. Happy Holidays!

EAST WHITTIER WOMANS CLUB COOK BOOK 1960

My mother graduated from Whittier College in 1955 and her sorority has been serving variations ever since! I remember ground beef, water chestnuts, celery and cream of something soup. I googled those ingredients and there plenty of recipes to choose from. Good luck!

Costo frozen fish

I like the Cod sold prepackaged. I defrost it and sauté it in coconut oil with salt and pepper. Very mild and delicious.

Christmas Day Dining in LA

I tried to make reservations at the Royce at the Langham in Pasadena but there were no reservations available. I'm OK with that because it was upwards of $125 per person.

Food habits that make you go...

My step-father eats with a left-handed overhand grip. I don't understand how my mother "allows" it. We were brought up with the most diligent of table manners. I shudder every time I watch him dig in. I love him to pieces but what the hell?

Do you moderate your drinking around your family?

I don't drink around my in-laws because they don't drink and are very judgmental. I wish they drank; perhaps they would be more interesting.

What food do you long for but can't find/recreate?

In the early 80's in Los Angeles' Chinatown, my sister and I loved a pork chop casserole which was simply a pork chop on top of spaghetti. I've tried to find the restaurant to no avail. If anyone knows what kind of Chinese cuisine this is and where in the 626 I might find it, I'd be forever grateful.

What did your Mom always have on hand, that you NEVER do?

I am at my mother's now and am cooking out of her pantry and refrigerator/freezer. She has all the above, including but not limited to, cream of X soup, canned fruit, funky spices, bisquick, but has become a much better cook since my sisters and I grew up in 50s, 60s, and 70s. But reading through this thread I realize I am a food hoarder. My only defense is that I live in a very rural mountainous part of California and most shopping is two hours away so I am prepared for all eventualities! But I do need to check myself. But I do love my potato ricer! They make the lightest "mashed" potatoes.

Best vegetarian restaurants in USA?

Definitely Millenium in SF. A vegan restaurant that does not rely on meat substitutes, if at all. Plus, it's fun to stay in the adjoining hotel.

Staying at the El San Juan - New Years Eve restaurant recommendation?

So, how was it? How was PR during the holidays? I'm really looking forward to our next trip
