Maremma...Thoughts?
Going to Maremma this weekend and have never been there before...anyone have any thoughts on it? What are the best dishes to get, desserts. Thoughts on service, etc?
Thanks!
Weekend in DC...need a Chow Itinerary
Thank you all so much! We have a great idea of where we'll go now. I think we'll try Pesce first, and if we can't eat there we'll eat at our hotel. Blue Duck Tavern for brunch sounds great.
Weekend in DC...need a Chow Itinerary
My wife and I are going to be in DC for a weekend and are looking for the best food in the city to cram into a weekend. We're going to Citronelle for dinner on Saturday night. Can we get a fellow hound to help us with meal suggestions for Friday night dinner (informal but really good...we have a long drive), and Sunday brunch and/or lunch? Thanks!
Del Posto...comments
I went to Del Posto back in November, and I thought it was awful when compared to Batali's other resturants. I think I saw that show as well, and he said himself that there would be many dishes you could get at other restaurants, but at much highers prices because he has a "10 million dollar restaurant to pay for." In all, the space is absolutely gorgeous; I don't think I have ever seen a restaurant more beautiful than the space than Daniel. However, the food for us was bad for the price especially; the pasta was not al dente, it was actually undercooked and parts were crunchy. Much of the food was simply good, but not transcendental, which is what I'm looking for at that price range and what I imagine Batali is looking to produce. Outstanding Italian wine list though, but for food I would rather wait at 4:00 PM for a table at Babbo, or head over to Lupa.
yasuda or should i wait for tokyo?
I have been to Tokyo numerous times, and have eaten at Yasuda. No doubt that Yasuda is great, but it is so pricey. There is another place in that area called Kuruma-Zushi, which is on the second floor of a nearby building. That I actually believe is better than Yasuda. I have taken my friends from Japan there and they think it's about as close to Japan as you can get here. But everyone has their opinion.
I would wait for Tokyo. You'll just can't beat it. When I went, we went to Tempura Bars, Yaki Tori bars, etc. and doing that will make it worth the wait.
ice cream (not gelato)?
I have to agree, the chocolate ice cream at Maison du Chocolat is the best in town. Other than that, I enjoy Payard's ice cream and sorbets.
Australian is by far one of my favorites. They are down on St Marks. I have to say that it really isn't hard pack though, it's slightly soft, but it isn't "soft serve" by any means. Delicious.
Best Mexican food in NYC
I have been to Centrico with my fiance, and I really enjoyed it. The food was very well done. The desserts were very bad though...we had a molten chocolate cake and it came out fully cooked and way too hot...we sent it back and the same thing happened again.
I hope they fixed their desserts, but the food itself was outstanding.
rude beyond belief at eatery
I have been to Eatery twice, once for dinner and once for brunch. Both times I really didn't have a terrible time with service. I agree with G3B...I don't expect more than them getting the order right and not being rude.
However, if they were seated by someone and no one even acknowledged them, then that's a problem. Did they ask to speak to a manager?
Telepan Review?
I can understand your feeling about the french toast...I too like my french toast on the soft side, but I guess i enjoyed the different take on what a lot of restaurants are doing with french toast these days.
Thanks for the feedback on the dinner...I'm going to have to try and make it before they get too busy!
Best Sandwich Places in Manhattan?
I actually really enjoy the tuna nicoise salad sandwich from Bouchon Bakery at the Time Warner Center if you're looking for something gourmet.
Also Agatha & Valentino (the grocer on the Upper East Side) makes fantastic Italian Subs as well.
Many of the sandwiches at the Wichcraft stalls in Bryant Park are great as well. My favorite is the Slow Roast Pork. Their Grilled Gruyere is delicious as well.
Telepan Review?
Okay, so I went to Telepan this afternoon for brunch. The restaurant is relatively new (7 months old) and I heard of it through a friend, decided to check it out. It's on the UWS, on 69th just east of Columbus Avenue. Before I go through my review, I also like to ask anyone else whose been there to chime in if they have eaten there as well.
Brunch: Saturday - Sunday; $25 Prix Fixe; includes Basket of Breads, First & Main Course
To me their brunch is an enormous value; the included bread basket consists of scones, cinnamon rolls, small donuts, and assorted cakes. They were all delicious to me. The donut was small, jelly filled, covered in sugar, and doughy. If you like your donuts like that then you may like this one.
First Course: Smoked Brook Trout on Potato Blini; Quail & Duck-Fig Sausage
Both were killer. Apparently the chef Bill Telepan is known for his Brook Trout.
Main Course: Chocolate Babka Style French Toast; Lobster & Scallion Omelet
The good thing about the french toast was that although there was a lot of chocolate, it was not too sweet. It just tasted of good chocolate. There was a filling, almost like a cashew butter in the middle. And the bread that they use is fantastic...it looks like it's going to be too hard, but it is perfectly crunchy on the outside but a soft bite on the inside.
The lobster & scallion omelet was delicious as well. The eggs were perfectly done (i like my eggs a little soft). The omelet could have been salted better, but there was still good flavor. The accompanying salad was very well dressed, the hash browns were well salted really well (I have had bad hash browns in the past because of this).
Atmosphere was lovely. Pastel greens on the walls, they have these beautiful square linen pendant lamps that are oversized, and small closed "fireplaces" with lit candles in each.
I would be eager to see what service and decor look like at dinner time. Has anyone else been there and can share their experiences?

best dessert/pastry chef?
I agree with almost everyone regarding desserts, although there are a few places I haven't been. I won't repeat what others have already said.
If you're in the mood to dress up, you can always eat a dessert tasting at Daniel's bar area.
The Tartufo at Batali's Lupa is unbelievable in my opinion as well.
Good luck and happy hunting!
oysters
BLT Fish Shack is a place I trust...plus they have a decent lobster roll (mmm...I love lobster rolls...)
Strangest chow you've eaten?
Okay, so I'm just trying to get a sense of the wackiest, most off beat chow anyone has eaten. I don't want to use the word "weird" because "weird" is subjective.
Mine actually was eel intestine, by accident when I was in Tokyo. Was not pleasant.
What about you guys?
Lupa - What to order !
I totally agree...with this place it's hard to choose since all of it is really good. If anything I really enjoyed the Tartufo dessert!
Lobster Roll?
Thanks again to all the responses! I'm going to carefully plot out these places vs. where I'm staying (which unfortunately I don't know yet...)
One food for the rest of your life?
all of these are way too deadly...goose fat potatoes?!? I've heard but never had. I'm sure I need to try these.
One food for the rest of your life?
LOL...definitely taking advantage of the "no health concern" part of the post! Good call though...
One food for the rest of your life?
I was thinking of Momofuku as well...it was close especially with those deadly pork buns...damn I'm thinking about them right now and I'm getting hungry. lol
One food for the rest of your life?
LOL...I think this post is making everyone hungry! I like the Caesar salad fav too...especially if the parmesan is freshly grated and still in sheets on top!
One food for the rest of your life?
That definitely counts in my eyes as one item! I enjoy my EVOO actually with a little salt and black pepper, red chili flakes, and some parmesan cheese in there too. Maybe a bit too much, but I really like it...
One food for the rest of your life?
Good call...I have to say I really enjoy good wings and I can eat them non stop at parties...
One food for the rest of your life?
I totally agree...as the original poster I left this out in the open and just got back from dinner (which I find interesting was sushi) and am checking now at the diversity...it's fantastic!
One food for the rest of your life?
Oh god now that I think about Carnitas soft tacos, it's getting me hungry! Especially if there's a good fresh guacamole involved!
Lobster Roll?
Thanks all for your support...I'm hoping I can swing by these places on my trip. Happy hounding!
One food for the rest of your life?
I see this is going to make me REALLY hungry.
