Great Dinner in Santa Barbara

Glbtrtr:

We had a lovely weekend in Santa Barbara. We were very surprised, and lucky, at how beautiful the weather was. We expected it to be chilly and it was gorgeous!

Thank you again for the many recommendations that you gave us.

We went to Hungry Cat early Saturday evening and all tables were reserved. We sat at the bar and really enjoyed watching the chef prepare fabulous meals. (I love to cook) We were just going to have appetizers as we wanted to go to Arigato. The menu is not as extensive as the Hollywood location. We shared seafood fritters with stone fruit, arugula and spicy aioli. They were very good, and ended up with 2 orders! We noticed the chef plate up some nice halibut and we asked him about it. It was a special and it was grilled and served over pappardelle pasta with cherry tomatoes, zucchini, beans and spinach. WOW was that fantastic, we shared that as well.

So we headed over to Arigato for “appetizers”…45 min. wait at 9:30pm. We gave them our cell # and headed to State & A for a drink and they called 10 minutes later. What a great idea – the sushi was great! We just had a few things since we well sort of ate already…spicy scallop, avocado cut roll/soy paper, salmon sashimi and yellowtail sushi. Oh, the quality of the fish was EXCELLENT; we will definitely be coming back to this place.

Sunday we did Holdren’s. We shared an appetizer; jumbo scallops with crab potatoes, these were fantastic and so was the sauce they served them on. His steak was excellent. I wanted to try the sand dabs. The fish itself was good, a little too breaded for me.

THANKS AGAIN for all your input – it was truly appreciated.

Santa Barbara - we will see you again, soon.

Great Dinner in Santa Barbara

glbtrtr-

Thank you so much for all of the recommendations. I was happy to see you post Arigato on there. I had read reviews and it seemed to have good ones and then you confirmed it for us. We LOVE sushi and while I am no “diva”, I am picky with my sushi. We are torn between Holdrens and Sea Grass. Looked at both menus and he wants a steak, but I can get enough of the menu at Sea Grass. I suggested we stay another night, but it does not work in our schedule.

I will let you know how it goes.

Is Chuck’s on the pier (I think) worth trying for lunch? I have been to Hungry Cat here in LA, how is the one there?

THANK YOU so much for all of your suggestions.

Great Dinner in Santa Barbara

Glad I saw this thread - we are also going to Santa Barbara for the weekend and were wondering where to go...from one extreme to the other, we are interested in a good steak house and a sushi bar. (two separate restaurants) I have also heard there is wine tasting near by. All suggestions appreciated... thanks

Can you freeze mashed potatoes?

This is interesting. I have a lot of mashed potatoes left and just asked my mother how she makes her potato pancakes. She told me to add an egg to hold together of course, but I thought that seemed unusual. This is how I ended up on this thread to see if they freeze well. Thanks for all the advice.

Pasadena, Old Town

Thank you for all of your suggestions.
They ended up going ahead of us to get in and out early to avoid UCLA traffic and were craving Greek food. They ended up at Santorini. They enjoyed it; had Humus, Lamb Souvlaki and Seafood Salad. She was vague and said "ethnic" and all weekend they expressed their fondness of Greek food.
We, however, would like to go back and try Akbar Cuisine of India.
Thanks again for your suggestions.

Pasadena, Old Town

We are having some friends coming in town for the weekend and they are interested in seeing Pasadena and the restaurants they have. They have interest in ethnic food, but we are open to all suggestions. We will probably be visiting during the day, lunch time or just after. Prefer sit down, order from the table. Thanks for your help!

Kings Seafood in Calabasas

I agree with kotatsu, the salmon is excellent. I enjoy the scallops and the clam chowder is really good.

Steamed Clams - Please help me find this restaurant

Years ago there was The Seafood Broiler in Tarzana. They served them in a bucket and they were great. I am not sure if they were a chain and if there was one near South Coast Mall.

Moving to West Hills. Need suggestions.

There are endless opportunities in the Woodland Hills area and the 2 shopping malls. There is Ruby's Diner, Maggianos, Roy's, Fleming's, Kate Mantilini, Ruth's Chris, Food Court in the Westfield Topanga Mall, Jerry's Deli, oh and Fallbrook Mall; Stonefire Grill, Red Lobster, Sushi Little Brother's, Alessio's, nice Italian. Piacere, PF Changs, Friday's, El Torito, you could probably eat some place new for months! You will have to go to The Common's in Calabasas; lot's to eat there and movies too. King Fish is great.

Please Help - Roy's Hawaiian in LA

If you like soft shell crab, we had the most unbelievable ones at Roy's in Woodland Hills at the end of July. The sauce that accompanied them was amazing!!!!! (I am not sure of their season, May - Sept.?) A must try.
I agree with Jack Flash- misoyaki butterfish is great. Enjoy!

What's good in Malibu these days?

There is Geoffry's, Guido's, Casa Escobar and I think there are some new ones at the Country Mart. They re-did the block that Malibu Lumber occupied and there should be some new ones in there. Enjoy!

There is something up the coast a ways and I can not think of the name. Nice place and I keep coming up with blue or whale or ????

desserts---what is your favorite dessert around los angeles?!

I love molten lava cake. I have a recipe for one that is SOOO easy to make and the chocoate oozzess(sp) out when you cut in. You can make it in advance too, so after dinner you just cook for 12 or so minutes. If anyone is interested I will post it or see where I got it and post that.

Best Burgers in Los Angeles

Very true!

Best Burgers in Los Angeles

I will agree that Hungry Cat's burger are great. I have heard from several different people about Father's Office. I do not like that fact they don't have or allow ketchup. Also I heard that you have to wait in line to order and then possibly wait for a table too...I love the burgers at Island's! (Did anyone else notice that this post originated in July of 06?)

Great sushi in SF valley, a la Northridge, Chatsworth etc.?!
