Do you wonder why the Chow site stinks?

I like your posts. But then again, I'm not in the "in crowd" either. I don't really care, however, because I am too busy with work to actively participate in discussions, and I get my validation from my real life friends, in real life. While there are some posters I enjoy reading more than others, I'm mostly here just to share and learn and be nerdy about food in a way that I wouldn't be with my IRL friends. I hope you stick around.

To stay OT, there was never much of value to me on the chow site anyway so as long as chowhound isn't disrupted, I'm not too fussed about them axing chow.com.

What to do with leftover slices of Granny Smith apples?

Grilled cheese, as suggested several times above. You can also just microwave with cinnamon and eat as a healthy apple pie filling of sorts. Or use as cracker for nut butter or hummus!

Egg entrees for egg haters?

Powdered egg white from say, the baking section, or an egg white protein powder?

I believe they have quite a modest sodium count too, for a processed frozen prepared Asian item.. although it is for a rather meager serving of 4 mini wontons.

cutting avocados??

You can leave it uncovered, allowing a "skin" to form. You will have to cut away a super thin layer of oxidized avocado flesh but it's a minimal amount of waste and the rest will be fine. I usually just eat avocados whole-- they're a great source of healthy fats.

Surprising sodium content foods?

Swiss-style cheeses are considerably lower in sodium than say, cheddars or a Parmesan or feta.

Yes. 14g of protein/serving and a great texture for crumbling or cubing.

That was my PSA. I saw it was back and took a quick peek at the ingredients since it had been "reformulated," and lo and behold, it now contains milk powder.

Why do people not think soybean oil is disgusting?

I literally started laughing when I read that the OP thinks Canola oil has a neutral flavor. I also think avocado oil is pretty distinctive, and delicious, and would never ever compare it to the travesty that is canola oil.

I wish I had access to a Wegmans but I live in Podunk, NC. Trader Joe's only came to town about a year and a half ago, and if I'm not mistaken, it's the only one in at least an 80mile radius!

Am I the only person on the planet that doesn't "get" Trader Joe's?

Thanks so much for sharing, fldhky! I work about a mile away from my trader Joe's so I regularly stop for a few things (never a full shop) but I'm going to try to write down my staples just for fun!

I love the frozen artichoke hearts. So much less expensive than the jarred and so convenient for throwing into dishes.

The hansen's diet ginger ale is also quite good-- it has a nice kick to it! Not as good as the season triple ginger beer, however. I wish they would make that an everyday item.

Hey Val, just curious, why do you think it is healthier to eat the almonds whole? The ingredients list on my jar of TJ's raw almond butter just says raw almonds...

I usually buy the Valencia from Costco but in a pinch I thought the TJ's organic crunchy unsalted was quite good. I hate jif-style pb, if it matters.

Monica, I'm currently buying it in NC, but in your area, maybe try calling the Nanuet location? I'm almost positive I've gotten it there before. Hackensack is way too crowded and gives me anxiety-- the only reason I'd go there is for the liquor!

I love the hot smoked salmon they carry. I can't remember the brand but it's honey smoked and extremely reasonably priced. Flakes apart with a fork in nice meaty chunks, and it's not too salty!

TJ's Olive Oil

Damnit now I feel like I absolutely must try this Frantoia you speak of..! Where can it be had?

TJ's Olive Oil

How much is the Frantoia? I am in my 9th year of higher education, with several more years to go. As a result, I am poor... so I personally think the California Estate is pretty great for the price. YMMV. Also the OP was asking specifically about olive oils available at TJ's since she already has a higher end bottle she adores.

TJ's Olive Oil

I am so sorry about the confusion! Can you tell I'm in my 20s?

The California estate extra virgin olive oil is my absolute favorite. It's a 100% arbequina olive oil and it is buttery, smooth, grassy, and delicious. I consider it to be a gold standard for how olive oil should taste. It's received top honors from consumer reports, as one of only two rated "excellent, as well as a mention in the Wall Street journal for a great value priced domestic olive oil. I use it mostly for raw applications such as dipping bread, finishing dishes, and dressing salads, but you can certainly cook with it as well. If I'm not mistaken, it's 500ml for $5.99. Pricey compared to the rest of TJ's olive oils, but a bargain compared to other EV olive oils of that caliber. I am probably going to buy the Tunisian to use as an all purpose oil because it's a bit less expensive.

TJ's Olive Oil

California Estate ftw! It has become the gold standard against which I compare all other (often pricier) olive oils. I also recently tried the Tunisian olive oil in a ton and it's excellent as well, but with a more pronounced peppery finish than the California Estate.
