Sichuan Cottage Marlboro

We went there a few weeks ago. Sichuan dishes and noodle dishes (Dan Dan Noodle) were still solid as they were before.

Lunch Today at Shanghai Bun Matawan

I would also like to recommend the pan fried buns. I actually like that more than their soup dumpling.

Also if you happen to be there for weekend breakfast/brunch, try the Rice Roll. I also love their fresh warm soybean milk. I prefer the salty version over the sweet version.

Matawan Update - West Lake, Pizza, etc.

Went to West Lake a few weeks ago for Dim Sum only and didn't notice any problems.

Excellent Value... New Ichiban 18 [East Brunswick]

So I guess this is what replaced Shogun 18 ?

Looked at the website, I guess they just turned Shogun into a typical Asian Fusion place (Thai, Chinese, Japanese (Sushi & Hibachi) ).

Miss Saigon in Freehold

When back for a second time to take advantage of the 25% off.
Ordered the usuals, Pho, Bun, spring roll, pork chop rice.

Once again everything tasted good as expected. Service remains a minor issue because it is obviously a family run restaurant and the server aren't really professionals. Then again, I don't think any sensible person should look for outstanding service in these type of places. As long as they are friendly and willing to serve, I am fine with it.

Although there are Little Saigon and Vietnam Bistro along route 9, this place is by far the closest to me. So for selfish reason, I really hope them do well.

40th Birthday dinner - fun, not too expensive, central jersey

If you like sushi / Asian food, get a party room in IchiUmi at Menlo Park.
In Middlesex county, a very nice quality buffet and not too expensive.

Miss Saigon in Freehold

Went there last night (Sat).
Definitely has a lot of things to work out with the service as expected. But like everyone has been saying they are very friendly and eager to serve.
The kitchen apparently isn't ready to serve the entire menu either, we wanted some chicken wings for appetizers but they said they cannot do it.
We ordered two Pho's, one pork chop rice dish, a curry chicken dish and spring roll.
Everything tasted good. Nothing spectacular but they were good enough to solicit a return visit.
Oh, the 25% discount helps also (until Nov 9, IIRC) and even without the discount their prices are still lower than Little Saigon in Marlboro.
It's definitely a nice addition to our area. Wish them well and definitely recommend giving them a try.

Texas Roadhouse, Holmdel

Yeah, this is the route I usually go with. I was just wondering if there are places that I overlooked in the area.

Key Foods Manalapan

I didn't even know this place exist until recently.

My wife went there once and said there are nothing there that distinguish them from other markets.
If we want regular stuff, we would go to Wegman's. And if we want organic stuff, there's now a Whole Foods nearby. So I am not surprised this place is done.

Mogo in Asbury Park has decent Korean fried chicken wings.

I agree with you; not all chains are bad.
I enjoyed the TR in Old Bridge/Sayreville, NJ.

In terms of chain vs. non-chain, in New Jersey, the non-chains are so hit or miss; if I am dining with my kids and/or my parents, going to a chain is sometimes just easier. I can expect a certain level of service and quality of food. And I can also count on them having kids menu.

Back to a topic related to Texas Roadhouse, are there any medium priced non-chain steak house in the Freehold area that are any good?

If I want a steak and don't want to pay $30+ per head, where can i go. I know there are some decent steakhouses in Red Bank and Asbury Park but they are all in the expensive side. For cheaper options, all I can think of are Outback, TR, Longhorn, and Charlie Brown...

Any reviews of the new Ajihei (Princeton)?

You might be right that the sushi chef retired. It almost sounds a non-Japanese owner took over place....

Hope we are both dead wrong on this because, like you mentioned, authentic Japanese place like this is almost non-existent in central NJ.

Soil Solarization: Your experiences, please

Understood, but I am not trying to make a new garden.
I have an existing ones that are messy and full of weeds. I am just trying to figure out a good simple way to get it ready for next spring.

Soil Solarization: Your experiences, please

I am relatively new to growing vegetables in my yard. The past summer, the amount of weeds was out of control. I am in New Jersey, by the way.

I read a few articles about soil solarization and it sounds like a solution to my problem. My question is should I just start cover the beds with plastic and leave them their over the winter so it will be ready when it's spring?
I also read about cover beds with black instead of clear plastics over the winter.

Anyone has any experience with that?

Thanks.

Coming soon to Old Bridge...

Went there last Friday. I know nothing about Puerto Rican food but i enjoyed the Chicharon - 3 chunks of crispy pork shoulder with yellow rice & beans. Decent portion size but a little pricier than I expect from a food truck ($11.50 including tax).
The man that took a the order was super polite and friendly.
I will definitely recommend giving them a try and I am going to follow them to see when they are coming back next time.

Taqueria Maria’s Monroe Township, NJ Anyone?

Drove by there a few times recently. Will probably try it out next week. The place looks really small. How is it inside?

Sunny palace

I held my wedding banquet there but it was 10 years ago. I had returned for a few other weddings with the most recent one about 3 years ago.

Well, the banquet food is decent. It is comparable to what you get in Chinatown or Flushing in my opinion. It is definitely WAY better than Crown Palace in Marlboro; this i can say for sure.

The service was excellent at my wedding. I have no complain but that was 10 years ago... I can't say i have seen any problem with their service in the other event i have attended there. I always felt the service at Sunny Palace's has always been good although i must say I am not someone that nitpicks on service usually.

Nuovo Trattoria Manalapan

Before Nuovo it was a brunch place named Le Peep.

I agree with you on that Middle Eastern place. I can't believe they would put all that effort on creating those sculptures on the exterior and end up not opening after all these years.

Restaurant for a birthday near Asbury Park

I was just looking at Taka's menu. The menu listed Sake, Wines, and Beer. Did it get a liquor license recently perhaps?

Empanada Guy

Tried this on Friday. I had one choriza and one beef. I am not an Empanada expert, but I quite like what I had.
It was $3 each, which is more than reasonable considering the size and amount of fillings.
Will definitely return to try different offerings.

Very interested in trying this place. Is this more of a sit down place or a take out place? I am imagining this place to look somewhat like Ibby's.

Good Sushi in Monmouth county? Where do you go?

Went to Kazu last night. I liked it a lot. It's definitely pricey - sushi & sashimi combo for two (wife and I) and a pork katsu for the kids - and the bill with tips comes to $110.

Quality of fish is good not great and the variety of the sashimi is kind of mundane. However, the sushi does excel because of the very well seasoned rice. Only a few different places in NJ serves sushi with great sushi rice - Ajihei in Princeton and Jo-Sho in Somerset comes to mind.

The pork katsu was ordered for the kids but i tasted a little bit of it and it was actually very good. Service is very friendly and for a Wednesday the place is 80% full and it seems every table occupied by people that are frequent customers.

So overall, i would definitely return. It is nice to know there is an enjoyable sushi place about 10 minutes or so from home.

Good Sushi in Monmouth county? Where do you go?

I like Japanese restaurant run by Japanese people; there are not that many in NJ outside of Bergen county. 90% of Japanese places are run by Chinese especially most of the Japanese buffet places.

The only thing that prevents me from going there is it looks a bit pricey to bring my two small kids. I have no problem paying good money for decent sushi but I really don't like paying $20 for chicken teriyaki.

Good Sushi in Monmouth county? Where do you go?

IIRC this place has lasted for at least a year.
The hot dishes are really nothing to write home about, they taste like the average hot dishes in a typical Japanese place.
The sushi are okay; I would say it definitely worth at least one try.

Good Sushi in Monmouth county? Where do you go?

Tokyo Rt 9, Freehold is my go to sushi buffet place since it is close to home and quality is consistently decent.
Ichi Umi in Edison Menlo Park (not in Monmouth) is by far my favorite but you are also paying more.

I don't like Teppanyaki and Freehold Grand Buffet's sushi. I get especially put off by Freehold GB's neon-green wasabi :-)

Sushi Palace is okay, the cooked food from them is kind of awful especially the "katsu".

I like Taka a lot, only been there once but the sushi and cooked dish (esp. braised short ribs) were both great.

I am looking to try Kazu. Will probably do so sometimes soon.

IMHO I think Vietnam Bistro is better than Little Saigon if you have to choose between the two.
