Looking for ideas for a celebratory dinner within an easy distance to the Supreme Court,

Would recommend Bistro Bis near the Union Station Metro and probably about a 5 or 6 minute walk from the Court

Pre-theater dining near Arena Stage

Station 4 is fair at best. I would opt for Sou'wester definitely.

China Trip-Recommendations

We are traveling to China this June and will be in Hong Kong, Beijing and Taipei. Looking for recommendations as to where to eat in any of these cities in all price ranges as we have never been to Asia. Thanks!!!!

Good mid-priced French, Italian or Mediterranean Restos from Bethesda to Upper NW

Le Chat Noir just below Mazza Gallerie on Wisconsin is very good French.

Early lunch Monday after Christmas?

Clyde's or the bar at Citronelle if it is open.

Friday drinks and Sunday brunch recs

If you can't get into the Tabard Inn's brunch Sunday (doubtful) you may want to try the brunch at Blue Duck Tavern which is not very far from Georgetown.

How is this list for DC Trip

For Washington dinner would eliminate Kinkead's and Nora and add Palena, Bibiana, 701, Cityzen or The Source (the later two are expensive but great)

Georgetown eliminate Clyde's and add Blue Duck Tavern (not Georgetown but close)

Silver Spring-might add Jackie's

Brunch add Tabard Inn definitely but book in advance

Asheville Trip-Dining results

We just retruned from spending a week in Asheville and wanted to give the board the thumbs up and down results from our restaurant visits:

Thumbs up
Nine Mile
12 Bones
Homegrown
Corner Kitchen
Posano
Also, those in the B & B we stayed in (Black Walnut which provided excellent breakfasts by the way) said they had good meals at Limones and Admiral)

Thumbs Down
Blackbird (horrible service though food was good)

Incompletes
Stone Market (closed from what we heard as they were catering for a Johnny Depp movie filming in town though the message on the restaurant phone gave no reason as to why they were closed mid week)

Tupelo Honey (downtown address had a long wait line to get in)

Ardeo Easter Brunch-Poor

Despite my better judgement eating out on a holiday, decided to try Ardeo for easter brunch. Wrong move. Brunch was extremely disappointing. Limited brunch menu and items we had (Fettucini with asparagas and french toast) were very bland. The only grood thing about the brunch was the "bottomless" mimosas for $10 and the dessert (chocolate crunch cake which was minimally passable but unforgettable). Service was poor; wife wanted ground pepper and waiter tried three pepper mills all of which were empty. Another waiter finally returned several minutes later and took him 5 minutes to return with pepper but by that time my wife finished the meal for fear of it cooling off. Rendered our issues with a floor manager with little response. Will not be returning anytime soon!!!

Asheville NC Restaurant Recommendations for July

Wife and are are visiting Asheville for vacation in July staying at the Black Walnut B & B. We would like recommendations for 5 days worth of lunches and dinners near the B & B or downtown. Will have a car so any recommendations slightly outside Asheville if really good are welcomed as well. Thanks!

Nice lunch for tomorrow (maybe near Conn NW and Van Ness NW)

Acacia Bistro at Conneticut and Yuma (2 blocks from Van Ness) is very good for lunch. Also, Palena at the Cleveland Park metro stop (one stop from the Van Ness metro) is even better.

Sou'Wester

Highly recommend Sou'Wester for pre Arena Stage theater meal. Meal was excellent (had trout) and the spacing between meal items very good. Also staff was very helpful in getting us out with enough time to get over to Arena Stage. Will return again.

Has anyone tried Carolina Kitchen in Hyattsville?

Is this the same Carolina Kitchen that used to be in downtown Silver Spring several years ago? If so, it was really good then.

Staying at the Louisville Marriott downtown-What's good nearby?

I will be staying at the Louisville Marriott on West Jefferson next week for business and being new to the city wanted to see what the board recommends for good restaurants nearby. Will need 3 dinners. Thanks!

Thoughts on Ashby Inn

I was there about two years ago and thoroughly enjoyed dinner there. I plan to return sometime this year!!!!!

Looking for help near the Omni Shoreham in DC

Would second the front cafe at Palena, especially for the hamburger. Would also recommend Ardeo a block away.

Need to pick up food for meeting in Union Station

I would second Toscana Cafe. The pizza and sanwiches are excellent.

Dining alone near Union Station this weekend

In your hotel is a wonderful French themed restaurant Bistro Bis. And around the corner is good but expensive seafood restaurant Johnny's Half Shell. Both are business casual

Acacia Bistro

Has anyone been to the new restaurant in Cleveland Park called Acacia Bistro (corner of Connecticut and Yuma at the site of the old Schlotzky's Deli)? I went just after Siestma's decent review last week and was fairly impressed. The food choices were interesting, quasi mediterranean with an italian accent and they have a nice beer and wine selection. One slight glitch on my visit was receiving cold mash potatoes with my chicken dish; I mentioned it to the waiter and after a bit of a wait they brought me another dish of potatoes. They were still cold but at least they tried. Owner came by to thank us for visiting and said they were busier than they expected (guess they did not realize Siestma's influence), so maybe that accounted for the cold potatoes. Nonetheless, a nice addition to the neighborhood and will give them another visit.

Fine Dining WITHOUT the Southern Hospitality: Magnolia Grill in Durham, North Carolina

My family, friends, and I were in North Carolina for my graduation from Chapel Hill. While there, we decided to take in the Magnolia Grill because of its reputation for fine food in a nice atmosphere. Once we arrived, the nightmare began. We were seated promptly in front of an area through which one could view the kitchen and an area highly trafficked by the wait staff. We promptly asked to be moved to another table (it was a Thursday night and at no time during our visit did the restaurant fill to capacity). We were curtly denied by the manager who said that there were no other tables available for a party of 5 even though we saw several that could have been pushed together to meet our needs.

We ordered drinks from the bar and had 4 appetizers while waiting for our entrees. When my 79 year old mother received her veal chop, she found it too salty and was asked by our server if she would like to return it, to which my mom replied yes. Since we could see into the kitchen, we were able to witness the manager pow wowing with the cooks...a few seconds later, the manager returned to our table with my mother's plate and asked her what was wrong with the plate. My mother responded that she found the chop too salty and felt that it would not be good for her to consume so much salt because she has hypertension. The manager responded: "The plate has been prepared the way it was supposed to be and therefore, you will have to pay for it. Of course, you are free to order another entree, but I will have to charge for that as well." My mother declined and sat there without anything while the 4 of us ate our dinner. Needless to say, we were very embarrassed and felt humiliated. Adding to our humiliation was the obvious discomfort of our server who was excellent and tried her best to make the best of what she clearly recognized, as a bad situation.

During the dessert course, our very sweet server brought complimentary desserts for my mother and one for the table. At no time did the manager come over to apologize or to see how things were going. The coup de grace was during dessert when we were fortunate (because of where we were sitting) to be able to witness the cooks spraying cleaning fluids over the hood of the stoves and ovens at the end of the night. It's hard for us to believe that this is the "best" of fine dining in North Carolina. We will never return to the Magnolia Grill, we won't tell others to go, and we will discourage all those who tell us they are even considering the place.

Disappointed in Durham

New Cupcake Store

Has anyone tried the new cupcake shop near the Verizon Center downtown called Red Velvet?

Casual joints around the Mayflower?

Panache around the corner from the mayflower on DeSales Street has a nice moderately priced menu for lunch. The dinner menu looked interesting as well though I have only eaten there for lunch..

Gillian Clark's The General Store

Anyone been to Gillian Clark's new restaurant in Silver Spring, The General Store? It was to have opened this past weekend based on an email alert she sent out for take-out only. What is the menu? Any word on when her other restaurant in Takoma Park is opening? Thanks!

ISO Fried Chicken and Chicken & Biscuits

Can recommend OOhs and Aahs, Levi Ports, Hitching Post and would add Paradise Cafe in All Souls Church on 6th & M NW.

Looking for someone who makes a great Birthday Cake

Looking for any suggestions for someone who can make a great looking and tasting birthday cake. I have seen a few recommendations on the board for BakeShopdc. Preferably baker would be located in DC but if not has delivery options. Thanks!

recommendations for excellent dc restaurants near Metro stops

Try Palena, either the cafe or the restaurant. It is about a half a block from the Cleveland Park Metro. Excellent italian food and you can hear yourself talk.
