Weber BBQ's CEP 310 vs S330

Looking to buy a bbq and have narrowed it down to these 2 - here's what it comes down to for me:

- The CEP 310 has 9mm stainless steel grills the s330 has 7mm grills
- s330 has a sear station and side burner, CEP 310 just has the 3 burners

given that both are the same price, is the 9mm more important or the sear station and side burner?

Review of 2 day Trip - Modern Bar Room, Locanda Verde and Babbo

Just got back from our mini vacation in NYC and wanted to thank all who helped us plan!

Saturday - got in just after lunch, we ended up grabbing some pastries at Balthazar and walked around - the sticky buns were tasty

Dinner at Modern Bar Room - I think we expected too much after the praise this place gets around here. Overall it was good experience, just not great, both in terms of service and food - here's what we had:

Tarte Flambee - it's a french pizza and it's big, one person could have this and dessert and be done for the night.
Liverwurst - same feeling as the Tarte Flambee, too much food. both of these dishes would be perfect for sharing amongst 4 people - but too much for just the 2 of us.
Alsatian Country Soup - this was delicious! it was unexpectedly thick and chunky and i just wanted more.
Long Island Duck - pretty good, we finished just about all of the dipping sauce.
Pork Belly - loved this, skin was super crispy. Could have did without the grated turnips though.
Beignets - very light and airy, another fairly large order, but we finished them real quick!

Sunday

Brunch at Locanda Verde - great vibe, would love to come back for dinner, anyway we weren't super hungry so we order (somewhat light):

Sheep's milk ricotta - lives up to the hype, so simple but so good.
Uova modenese - their version of eggs benedict, couldn't stop eating the hash
- wanted to grab some olive oil coffee cake on the way out, but wifey stopped me because she wanted to go back to balthazar for more sticky buns (we got there and they were out!)

Dinner at Babbo - we had 730 reservations and we got out of the subway at around 720 and ended up lost. We didn't get to the restaurant until about 745 - although we did end up getting directions from Rick Moranis! When we finally got there, we were expecting them to tell us they had given our table away, but they were very gracious and said that our table wasn't quite ready yet. WE didn't get seated until just after 8:15pm. Anyway, we were pretty set on ordering 1 antipasti, 3 pastas and 1 secondi until the manager told us that was too much food, very glad we listed to him. Onto the food:

Bread - the bread sucks here and they don't give you butter or olive oil
Octopus - really amazing, very meaty, almost lobster like texture, i've never had it like this before. we were definitely craving more.
black spaghetti with calabrese and shrimp - this was our favourite dish of the trip. everything was perfect about it, al dente, just spicy enough, crunchy, we oohed and ahhed over this the entire night. anything following this was going to be a let down.
goose liver ravioli - not as rich as i thought it'd be, but also delicious, just not as the dish above.
pork chop - it was massive but juicy and tender, but it was the best pork chop i've ever had.
warm apple and fig budino - not much of a pudding, more like coffee cake, it was only ok, wouldn't order it again.

and that's it - can't wait to come back!

tertulia or txikito?

going to grab an early dinner before a show and wanted to try one of the 2. thinking 530pm on saturday, a few questions:
-how long should i expect wait for a table and how long should i budget for dinner? theather is around 45th and 8th ave.
-how much for 2 people (no alcohol)
-what are some dishes we should try?

thanks!

Pre-theatre Dinner

I have reservations at the modern bar room and ma peche - which do you prefer and why? our show is on a saturday and is on 45th street between 7 and 8th aves. also, what's pricing like at ma peche, can't seem to find anything...

Thanks!

The Modern Bar Room - portions

Are there certain dishes that are more just tastes and others that are closer to entree size?

Thanks

2 Nights in NYC

i don't really consider brunch at locanda verde to be all that italian. we can probably go to craft again next time we're in the city...we got lucky with babbo this time, next time we might not be so lucky...

2 Nights in NYC

good points....and here's the revised list. thanks to everyone for all your help!

saturday lunch - shake shack, dinner at the modern bar room
sunday - brunch - locanda verde, dinner at babbo

2 Nights in NYC

what do you think of the modern bar room instead of db bistro? is it more casual? is everything tapas sized? and how much time would we need to eat there?

thanks!

2 Nights in NYC

Ok this is the current itinerary:

Sat - Lupa for Lunch, still DB Bistro for now, the theater is at 8th and 45th st
Sun - Locanda Verde for Brunch, Craft for Dinner (although I'm holding onto that Babbo reservation right until the last moment just in case we change our mind)

is lupa lunch and early dinner too much food? we're choosing craft because we are thinking that babbo will be similar to lupa (good assumption or not?)

2 Nights in NYC

Would prefer a sit down - How is lupa for lunch? Don't care about type of cuisine for this meal

Good to know that some places take brunch reservations - locanda verde looks very good.

Price pre theater isn't an issue, time is. Show starts at 8pm so can't do a long dinner - what did you have in mind?

We don't drink - does that make the decision any easier?

thanks kathryn

2 Nights in NYC

I'll be in the city for a weekend in Oct, looking for advice for lunch/brunch and dinner.

Saturday - Lunch, something quick and cheap, around midtown...thinking shake shack. but wouldn't mind trying something new.

Dinner - this is going to have to be early as we are watching a show at 8pm. Leaning towards db bistro right now, but again I welcome all suggestions

Sunday - Brunch, any must try places for brunch? village/soho area? locanda verde looks really good, prune, balthazar or even minetta tavern? should we expect lineups everywhere?

Dinner - I've secured Babbo and Craft for 730pm already - which one should we stick with?

Thanks!

Suggestions? 2 days in October

Coming from Toronto - ramen has not quite made its way over yet. couple of decent spots but from what i hear, not comparable to nyc.

imo, Chinese is much much better in toronto and cheaper too.

how about craft or c&s for sat dinner?
are babbo and lv similar experiences?

Suggestions? 2 days in October

Will be in town for 2 days, here's what we're thinking so far and looking for suggestions/advice...

Saturday:
Lunch - Shake Shack, or ramen shop?
Dinner - Gramercy Tavern, Modern Bar Room or Untitled

Sunday
Lunch - thinking late lunch at EMP if available on Sunday
Dinner - later dinner at Babbo, Locanda Verde, Torrisi

We don't drink, but looking at $300/day on food, and we aren't picky about location....open to just about everything except chinese and sushi, we get enough of both...

Thanks!

Lunch/Dinner Options with Toddlers

any other places around town? i think we have the natural museum covered...

Lunch/Dinner Options with Toddlers

thanks. how far is the walk from the museum?

Lunch/Dinner Options with Toddlers

2 high chairs - don't care about budget. i assume nobody will be recommending per se or emp for us.

Lunch/Dinner Options with Toddlers

Strollers can be left out front.

Lunch/Dinner Options with Toddlers

Need a few suggestions for lunch and dinner with toddlers, here are the specifics:

- 4 adults and 4 toddlers, we'll have a couple of strollers
- loud is good, just no indian and chinese (we have a lot of that where we now), anything else is fine
- no big chains (Chipotle's is ok)
- we'll be eating early, around 5-530pm
- close to subway would be ideal

Where we'll be:
Day 0 - Dinner downtown somewhere?
Day 1 - American Natural History Museum/FAO/Central Park
Day 2 - Midtown/Times Square
Day 3 - Soho/Greenwich

Thanks!

All Clad vs Mauviel (Stainless Steel)

M'Cook vs AC traditional or d5 - also, which line provides better value?

All Clad vs Mauviel (Stainless Steel)

Does anyone know what the differences are out there? Price is similar, I'm looking at buying a 5 or 7 piece set. Leaning towards Mauviel, because I like the look a little more.

5th Annivesary DInner

Any suggestions? Nothing stuffy - but willing to pay $100/person...and we don't drink wine. Would like to stay away from asian, we get that enough already.

Luminato - 1000 Tastes (June 19th and 20th 2010) - Queens Park

went right around 12pm on Saturday and there were no lineups for tix or for food. susur was actually there helping out and taking pictures. the standouts for me were from amuse bouche, they made fish cakes and burgers. it's too bad they closed 2 weeks ago, hopefully they'll pop up somewhere else soon.

Le Gourmand at Y & E closed down--due to non-payment of rent!!!!

Yonge and Bloor and the Spadina locations have also closed - because of rent issues.

Le Gourmand Spadina closed?

@pinkprimp - fair enough on the expenses. they did tell TO Life a few months ago that these 2 locations were stronger than ever and that he was planning to open up a few more stores.

someone planning to to open up additional stores must of had their ducks in a row right?

Le Gourmand Spadina closed?

The HBC location closed just last week - it was always packed at lunch time. There are plenty of joints in that food court that weren't as busy and charged much less - it couldn't have been a revenue/expense issue. I think there's much more to this....

Susur cooking at Madeline's this weekend?

Was there Saturday night and he was roaming the room and sat down for extended parts of the evening with 2 of the tables; I think his wife was at 1 of them. He came by, introduced himself and checked on us at least 3 or 4 times. He was very gracious and seemed genuinely interested in our opinion.

We had the CNY menu and it was ok - nothing that blew us away, but solid. The only thing that I didn't enjoy was the salad, the vinegar completely overpowered the rest of the dish - aside from the presentation, anyone could make this dish at home in about 5 minutes.

I would definitely try again - but only with him running the show, worth the extra $$$ for the entertainment value alone.

Susur cooking at Madeline's this weekend?

I've heard that he'll be back cooking in Toronto for a special Chinese New Year dinner - can anyone confirm?

I checked the website and all they have is a $50 prix-fixe that isn't anything like what they usually serve at Madeline's.

Grace Suggestions?

Going on Wednesday - website has a menu, but any must tries? or anything we should avoid?

THanks in advance!

Ge: Graham Elliot

Went to graham elliot and it didn't blow me away - i think our expectations were too high. everything was pretty good, but our lasting impression was a horrible dessert. We had the moist gooey chocolate brownie suggested by our waiter - unfortunately it had the consistency of a puck. We told our waiter and he switched it for another one which was warm, moist and gooey; it's almost as if they forgot to warm up the 1st one before serving it to us. We expected a comp of some sort, maybe even an apology from the kitchen, didn't get either.

Chicago trip with 17-month old. Help!

Thanks for this post - we're in the same boat! We'll be in town June 28th - July 2nd and will also be staying along the mag mile with our 14 month old son. Have Fox and Obel planned as well...the taste of chicago is on while you're there, try the link below.
