That's also worth noting. Having the same chef at the restaurant is also key. Its so rare that the same chef stays at a restaurant for a long period of time.

Thanks for your suggestions! I said "under the radar" because I'm not looking to try scene-y places. I 'd like to eat classic french cooking without feeling like the atmosphere is clouded with people who are eating there because of some recent rave review. Just something that emits a good sense of France! I know there aren't many haute French cuisine places left from New York's golden era. But i'm sure of the few that are left, one of them might be worth checking out.

I have my birthday coming up and I've decided on a specific cuisine in mind but not specific on a place yet. One of my favorite restaurants in the city for service and food is La Grenouille. It's decadent and has one of the most attentive staff in the city in my opinion. The entrees transport me back in time without having been stuck there and the souffle for dessert is brilliant.
i've also tried La Mangeoire as well. Decent and satisfying. i like that place because it's unassuming and not scene-y.
...But, i've been there before and i'm looking for opinions on some new "old guard" haute French restaurants here in Manhattan. I've been meaning to try Le Veau d'Or but havent yet. Has anyone got any ideas for a place that is under the radar and amazing at the same time? Your help would be great and i would appreciate your feedback!

I really appreciate her willingness t go there for me as I have been wanting to try the place for a while. Thanks SnackHappy! Le Fillet does sound really delicious and has a variety of seafood options for us. I think we're leanign more towards that restaurant for now. The other recommendations are great as well. Petit Alep has a great following and gotten some amazing reviews too. We'll have to check it out. We're staying in the Old City and are also looking at eating in some of the Mile End places as well.

Hi Chowhounders!

This week, my wife and I are driving into Montreal from Williamsburg, Brooklyn and are planning out what restaurants we want to visit. We've scoured the Montreal Chowhound messageboard and they had some really great suggestions from other users. We're both in our 30s, I am a teacher and am into antiques and scouring flea markets. I like to eat meat and vegetables; into microbrews but generally tend to eat healthy. My wife eats no meat, loves french macarons, pour over coffee and vintage Chanel. :)
We're going to arrive on Montreal this Friday (April 15th) through next Tuesday. We've already made a reservation at Au Pied De Cochon on Sunday and have been trying to figure out if we want to go to Le Fillet and Lemeac. Between the two, they both look extremely good. What do you think?
Also, we're looking for casual eateries where we can get small plates for dinner as we don't want to eat too many big dinners while we're here. We both like the eating experience we had in Spain where we ate small dishes with good wine. We'd love to have that same experience in Montreal. Are there any places that anyone can recommend with this in mind?

Thank you so much for sharing some places you thought were relevant to our food quest in Spain. I'm still in researching mode, trying to make sure we hit all the right places. I'm hoping to bypass anything that is trendy or "of the moment". While both of us appreciate those places, we're mainly interested in unpretentious and well executed foods. We have so many great places here in New York but want to try places that are known for being consistently good.

My wife and I are from Williamsburg, Brooklyn headed to the south of Spain for February 13-28th on our honeymoon/vacation. We are always hungry for new and exciting food experiences. Both of us love to eat and discover new places and to comb through flea markets in search of the odd and unusual treasure and appreciate the city and
country (we spend a good time traveling from our little Brooklyn
apartment to upstate New York). In Spain we'd like to have a "Spain: On the Road"
experience. Our order of cities is as follows:
FEB 13-15: Granada
FEB 15-17: Cordoba
FEB 17-19: Malaga
FEB 19-21: Ronda
FEB 21-23: Jerez de la Frontera
FEB 23-27: Seville
We're also trying to get to the countryside for that off the
road experience if you know if anything that is close to those cities driving wise that you might think would be fun. Any advice to make this a successful trip would be extremely appreciated.

Absolutely lovely place, reminds me of what Max's is to the East Village. So cozy and chaming inside, wonderful host who sat and talked to us for a bit. Very mellow atmosphere with candlelight surrounding inside the room. The salads are perfectly dressed and the pasta was outrageous (all made in house!); simply divine! I urge anyone to check this place out. Very impressed with the quality of service and food. Will be back there often!

I have not eaten at Brooklyn Label however, if their macaroni and cheese is the one that won in the Casserole Contest, I'd definately give my reccommendation to eating there. I was one of the "contestants" at the Casserole Contest and found the wait staff and everyone else who worked there helpful and friendly. Good luck!

It has just came to my attention that there is a dish that I've been dying to try; Chicken and Waffles. It came to my attention recently on a food jaunt to Philadelphia where a friend of mine had moved and was raving about eating a delicious dish where both Chicken and Waffles were the main course! I've done some research and found some places that serve it here but wanted to know from the people what places they've been to and what they thought about the Chicken and Waffles at those particular places. If you have eaten this dish here in Brooklyn or in New York, what is your reccommendation?

Try checking out Buddah Bodai in Flushing, Queens. Its a great vegetarian dim sum place with excellent selections that are both fresh and tasty. Make sure you get there before three o'clock as they don't serve dim sum past that hour. However, the other selections on thier menu (i.e., mock chicken, etc) are amazing!
