Cheap, WHOLESALE Grocery Food Online (Student)

It's actually like 130th and 12th Avenue.... closer to Dinosaur BBQ (and Columbia's Studebaker Hall)... try this:

Westside is convenient... especially since they are open 24 hours and is a far far better choice than that horrible Morton Williams place, but... cannot compare to Fairway, ever! The only Fairway I am talking about is the 125th Street store... while they do not sell items in the traditional sense of "bulk" (i.e., Costco-size), I find the shopping experience there great. Their delivery service is amazingly prompt and reliable, and generally my Columbia FLEX discount more than covers the delivery fee. Also: Columbia runs a shuttle bus from campus to that block... check the CU website for details.

When I return to NYC next week, Fairway will be one of my first stops!

I am also a Columbia person, and I find the trip to FAIRWAY/125th Street to do the trick 100% -- plus you get a 5% discount if you pay with your Columbia FLEX account. They deliver promptly and the prices, variety and quality are amazing!

New Haven Pizza vs. Old Forge Pizza

As a Native New Haven-er (now in Manila), I thought the only issues were red sauce vs. white clams and Pep's vs. Sally's. Right now, I would do anything for a picture of Foxon Park soda and a white clam pizza at Pepe's. Wow...

Best Everything Bagel in NYC

Absolute Bagels is, without question, the best!!! (And their relative proximity to Columbia is a help, too.) Not only are their "everythings" the highlight of my morning ritual, I also get to practice speaking Thai with the staff. Total win-win!

Where to find beef for carpaccio??

All locations?? We are in Morningside Heights!

Where to find beef for carpaccio??

Hey, everyone here was wonderful a few days ago when my friend from Calabria arrived.

Now I have a more specific question: he wants to prepare a carpaccio dish at home... does anyone know of a market/butcher shop where we can find appropriately sliced beef for this dish?

Mega thanks to everyone in this great community!

Italian Guest With Me For 3 Months - Where to Go?

Wow, all of you people are so amazing and thanks so much... I should have told you all that we are living in Morningside Heights -- not exactly a foodie paradise area. Our first neighborhood shopping excursion was an eye-opener: shopping with such care and precision... Keep your comments coming. We will do a field trip to the Harlem Fairway together this week and go farther afield thanks to your suggestions soon. (By the way: first lunch is a pasta with pesto that he is spiking with dried Thai chile peppers... the other choice was pasta with tuna and black olives. This is going to be an amazing three months!)

Italian Guest With Me For 3 Months - Where to Go?

I am hosting an Italian gentleman for three months (from Calabria)... while he claims to be enjoying the local New York food experience, I can tell that he truly longs for some good Italian food as well. Cafe, restaurant, grocery shops -- any and all!

Any advice? Happy to travel outside of Manhattan, of course --

Thanks!

Three Thai Dinners in One Weekend

Totally agree with GP that Zabb City's salads are far better than their curries. My two visits to Pam Real Thai were disastorous -- just not even close to Thai food. Bland, overcooked... ugh! Pongsri is better, and my experiences there have not been great.

Sripraphai? Go there often (actually prefer Chao Thai in Elmhurst, though)... Still hoping against hope to find someplace in Manhattan so I do not have to deal with te dreaded #7 train.

Three Thai Dinners in One Weekend

Since I have Thai houseguests who do not like "farang" food, we did an intense Thai food search this past weekend. While my expectations are low, I did have some interesting experiences ranging from the poor to good.

Friday: Zabb (the one on East 13th Street) -- charming wait staff, excellent som tham (ask for it "phet phet"), very good pla rad prik, absolutely inedible penang curry. Sweet place, want it so much to succeed, they just need to work on their poor dishes or purge them from the menu.

Wondee Thai ( west side of 9th Avenue & 50-something Street): amazingly good meal of som tham (asked for phet phet, served phet phet) and pretty good yum plah duk foo -- the catfish was well cooked, but the mango salad base was way to sweet. Nice staff. Welcoming if busy atmosphere. The sticky rice, however, was weird. More like a congealed steamed rice. A strange disappointment in an otherwise good meal.

Tiny Thai (west side of 9th Avenue, around 50-something street): yikes -- how does this place even stay in business? Don't know what was worse: the service or the food. The menu itself is barely thai and the food... well: even though I asked for it phet phet and the waiter acknowledged understanding it had NO heat at all. When I asked for some "prik nam pla" to try to add heat to it myself, I was told that they had none. The first time that has ever happened to me in any Thai restaurant anywhere. Avoid!

Interested in see other folks' feedback on these or similar experiences. Still searching for the ultimate Thai food fix anywhere in NYC.
