Chinese in Manhattan for a mixed family- Dilemma!
honestly, we love them all. i'm personally over sichuan right now, but the rest of my family loves it, and americans love that ma la taste. i have a severe fondness for cantonese, i would be delighted to find some decent taiwanese, i don't know fujianese that well, and i like hunan when done well. i think flushing could work, although i have to check with my boyfriend's family.
Chinese in Manhattan for a mixed family- Dilemma!
It's not part of the original request because I can't imagine an actual Chinese restaurant not having a Chinese menu! But I might be wrong.
Chinese in Manhattan for a mixed family- Dilemma!
Thank you Simon. I expressed this dilemma to my boyfriend and he opined that it'd actually be hilarious, albeit in a painful way. Oriental Garden sounds amazing. I forget why I'd discarded it as an idea in the first place.
Btw, I don't see any guacamole choices- but yes, the mango and coconut curry choices are concerning. This reminds me a lot of a Chinese restaurant I was taken to in Paris- Chez Vong, super high end and super hilarious.

Update: My mom visited Hunan Manor and had a plethora of complaints that she voiced in her loudest Chinese-Mom-Complaining, ear piercing whine. Basically, she refused to taste the food because it was too small and too dirty for a meeting of the in laws and she thought the service was extraordinarily rude.
At this rate, I think we'll end up at Chinatown Brasserie and do the Peking Duck and an assortment of dim sum. I trust Pookipichu because her writing is lovely and evocative, and I found myself drooling over her Peking Duck description, but I find it very scary that CB has no menu written in Chinese. I'll literally have to translate the menu at this Chinese restaurant for my Chinese mother!
Chinese in Manhattan for a mixed family- Dilemma!
Thank you so much AubWah.
My mother actually did recommend Hunan Manor for us (along with Peking Duck House, which I am discarding as an idea). I have always associated Hunan food with a lot of Americanization, so my first instinct was to avoid it. Do you have any recommendations for dishes?
Chinese in Manhattan for a mixed family- Dilemma!
Thanks for the recs guys! Cafe China and Peking Duck House are now definitely under consideration. Chinatown Brasserie sounds interesting for my Chinese family but probably weird for my bf's fam. Will want to avoid super upscale anyway.
Chinese in Manhattan for a mixed family- Dilemma!
I'm an SF-based Chinese-American hound looking for some decent Chinese dinner grub in Manhattan that I can take my family and my boyfriend's Caucasian family to around Xmas.
My boyfriend's family desperately wants to get an "authentic" Chinese experience. And my Mom desperately wants to present Chinese people as extremely clean people who care about service. (She keeps recommending places in midtown).
Therein lies the rub! Are there any authentic delicious places that can fit 10 people with a reasonably clean atmosphere and decent service?
I'm paying for the whole thing, so I'd prefer a place that wasn't insanely expensive (
Any other recommendations beyond Fuleen and OG? Anything else?
Thank you in advance!
Croatia- Dubrovnik, Split, Vis
We are taking a trip to Croatia in late September. While I was sorely tempted by Istria and truffle season, we are suckers for islands, beaches, and so we couldn't resist the Dalmatian coast and don't have time for Istria this trip.
But that doesn't mean we are willing to sacrifice the quality of food.
We'd like to avoid the overpriced, frenchified food if possible. Want to emphasize fresh, authentic, and delicious. Love all seafood, esp mollusks and crustaceans, love prsut, love cheese, love wine... Well you get the picture. We're gluttons.
Any recommendations in Dubrovnik, Split and Vis Island would be very much appreciated. Dubrovnik especially!
On Vis I'm already interested in Jastozera, and Kod Paveta...
On Split I'm interested in checking out Buffet Fife, Nostromo, maybe Konoba Varos? But I haven't really begun to look.
In Dubrovnik I'm considering a day trip to Mali Ston to eat oysters. Where else should we go?
Considering a day trip to Trogir- any great places to eat there?
Thanks in advance!

Palo Alto Moxsie Street Eats Today- Mexican, Macarons, Creme Brulee
Hey Guys,
Moxsie Street eats is hosting a new Mexican truck called No Way Jose. I'm sure they'll be great!
We'll also have the Occasional Macaron Shop coming by with all sorts of macarons and also vanilla creme brulee. I love their macarons, good amount of flavor, light as air meringue with filings that give them a bit of body. Macaron flavors are: dark chocolate, salted butter caramel, pistachio, raspberry, lemon...
Come by and check it out!

Thanks Melanie-
BTW the louisiana territory truck is covers both cajun and creole, not just cajun cooking.
Check out Palo Alto Friday Street Eats: Exemplary Cajun Chow, Madeleines, Macarons
My bad, I'm from Boston and live in California and know nothing about Cajun or Creole food. I'm sure the chef knows all the ins and outs. All I know is that the beans and rice (maybe the dish I had was called something else?) was absolutely delicious!
Check out Palo Alto Friday Street Eats: Exemplary Cajun Chow, Madeleines, Macarons
Hi Chowfriends,
Another installment of Moxsie's Street Eats is coming this Friday, 7/16/10 from 11:30 onwards at 120 Hawthorne Ave. in Palo Alto. We have street eats every Friday but I thought I'd do a shoutout on the board specifically for the three carts we have coming this week since they're a bit lesser known but we expect them to be out-of-this-world delicious.
The Cajun chow comes to us courtesy of The Louisiana Territory Cajun cooking truck. I was lucky enough to sample some of their rice and beans which was almost creamy, like a loose risotto, and smoky with sausage. Also got to taste some decadent bread pudding topped with a butterscotch sauce spiked with a generous amount of whiskey or bourbon.
They have 4 1/2 stars on yelp:

Mad 4 Madeleines has come to our street eats before. So we can expect moist madeleines in creative and classic flavors. From meyer lemon to strawberry guava, as well as a savory cornbread madeleine served with chili. These are a far cry from the prepackaged madeleines you see at the coffee shop.

I haven't yet sampled The Macaron Shop's wares. They look beautiful, but we'll have to see if the fillings are as intensely flavored and the meringue is as delicate as I generally like.

Food Trucks in Palo Alto: Adobohobo, Lumpia Cart, and Creme Brulee Carts this Friday at Lunch!
Hi Hounds,
Following this thread I posted asking for advice about local food trucks you love: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/696401?tag=boards;topic-696401
I'd like to invite all the Peninsula hounds to come by my company's headquarters this Friday. We have started inviting yummy local food trucks to the unlikely locale of Palo Alto. Recent trucks have included @mogobbq, @chowdermobile, @pizzahacker, @jettcakes, etc.
This week is @Adobohobo, and @cremebruleecart. (Despite the title, the lumpia cart can no longer make it).
We're not sponsoring it or anything, we're actually just huge foodies and really like having some other lunch options in Palo Alto.
So here are the details:
What: Adobo and Creme Brulee for lunch
When: Friday, April 30 at 11:30 AM till when we run out!
Where: The address is 120 Hawthorne Ave in Palo Alto, a few blocks off of University.
Feel free to post any questions, and here's our yelp event with all the info:
http://www.yelp.com/events/palo-alto-adobo-lumpia-creme-brulee-and-you
Here's our google calendar with upcoming food trucks:

Or you can follow us on twitter @moxsie for our friday street eats updates... But note that we're a fashion company, so the rest of our tweets will be about fashion!
Also, happy to answer any questions!

Best Bay Area Food Trucks?
Wow, these are delicious sounding ideas! Keep em coming and thank you so much!
Best Bay Area Food Trucks?
Tried looking for threads, so I apologize if this is repetitive.
My company, in Palo Alto, usually has Friday lunches catered. Last Friday we had the yummy MogoBBQ Korean Taco truck come around. We tweeted it to our 30K followers and had a lot of people come by to try it out. It was so successful that we thought it'd be fun to do this every Friday with a rotating line up of food trucks.
We are looking for high quality food of any ethnicity- as long as it's not the typical roach coach.
What are your favorite food trucks? Contact info is appreciated, but definitely not required. The name, or an approximation of the name IS required.
Thank you in advance!
Homma's Brown Rice Salad
I realize that this reply is laughably late, but my friend and i figured it out. I don't have exact proportions but we have now come extremely close to replicating the recipe and enjoying the salad at home:
seasoned rice wine vinegar
tahini
white miso
a flavorless vegetable oil (grapeseed oil)
and that's all! every time you think "sesame dressing" you think toasted sesame oil as an ingredient, but obviously very wrong when you taste it! not sure if anyone will ever google this again, but if they do- there it is!
Molecular Gastronomy Resto Opening in Palo Alto- Baumé
According to an Urbandaddy missive today, Palo Alto is getting a molecular gastronomy restaurant called "Baumé." Bruno Chemel from Chez TJ is the chef and the restaurant is opening on Thursday. There's no rule that Palo Alto's restaurants have to be mediocre so I'm really hoping that this'll change things up. Not sure how foams, airs, and trompe l'oeil whatnots will go over in PA, but there's enough money here to support higher prices. Now for some delicious everyday dining here please!

If anyone goes, would love a report.
Is there ANY good thai food on the Peninsula?
Pinkster, can you tell us what limited things you order at Lotus?
Thanks!
Is Sebo still up to par?
I'm having sushi on Saturday night (not interested in the cooked stuff at all) and have waited long enough now. My bf is agitating for Ino, which is fine, but the last few times we were there, we didn't get much of anything too interesting. Quality was still great, but specials shipped in, unusual items were definitely not there.
I'm worried quality at sebo has fallen due to exposure... any recent reports at the sushi bar?
Thanks in advance.
Looking for a Crepe Cake
bumping this up. my colleague is having a cake emergency- his wife's bday is tomorrow and he just realized that this is the one cake she'd love to have. any sightings of the infamous mille crepe cake in the sf bay area?
Loving Hut (Vegan Chinese) opens 10/11 in SF, 10/4 in Palo Alto
