Shibucho, boy, have I missed it.

This is my understanding of the Shibucho lineage as well. I miss Shibutani-san...he was my sushi mentor and introduced me to many new and unique items...I miss his warmth and twinkle in his eye!

Grimaldi's Pizza in El Segundo Review:

Both Sotto and Clusi Batusi produce a tasty pie...Sotto is close to home so I have been a number of times...but once again, it is lacking in authenticity...the balance that makes pizza in Napoli and Roma so special is just not there....and when I am on Sawtell, it is hard to go for pizza at Clusi Batusi (I have...good, not great) when excellent sushi and noodles are right there! It is probably an ingredient problem...but then again, I can produce a pretty decent pie at home with the ingredients I can get. All of this talk is making me hungry...I may have to fire up the "beast" this weekend (12 hours of preheating before cooking)

Grimaldi's Pizza in El Segundo Review:

I have...a number of times...unfortunately Settebello is just not to my taste!...the crust is not right...and this is sad since I have an office within walking distance. I have actually been to the MDR, SLC and Farmington, UT locations...an A+ for consistent product...but lacking to me.

De gustibus non est disputandum!

Fortunately I constructed a small backyard bread/pizza oven where I can make a pretty fair pie...if I don't say so myself!

Grimaldi's Pizza in El Segundo Review:

I have been to a number of Grimaldi's around the country...including the "mothership" (which I understand is separate from the franchise operation)...Simply stated, the sauce is too sweet but the crust is good. I have remedied this situation a couple of times by asking them to make a pie with minimal sauce (a schmeer!) topped with thinly sliced fresh sliced tomatoes...and since the El Segundo location is within walking distance of work...I will have to make do with this.

Unfortunately, this Italian boy has yet to find authentic pizza (Neapolitian, Roman or other) anywhere in SoCal...and I have looked for 50+ years! A chain operation is not likely to use good San Marzano tomatoes which would not need sugar to balance the acidity (as others have mentioned)...and the American palate is unfortunately "trained" to crave sweet...so corporate America is obliging the public in this!

My two cents --- the gumbo

I wanted to like it...the people are nice, but, for me, it is a no go...As others have stated the food is too salty...it seems that in their attempt to be healthy, they have eliminated a lot of fat and flavor replaced it with salt...not good. I guess my first warning was the use of veggie andouille sausage in the gumbo and the mostly fat free shrimp and grits...I am sorry, why bother...Cajun and Creole food, by its very nature, is a porky, fatty experience with very fresh ingredients and in the case of Creole cooking, a lot of butter!...and a dark roux. not the milk chocolate brown they use. As someone who lived in NOLA for a lot of years...and even went to cooking school there...My Two Cents does not quite measure up!

BTW...we are making a big pot of gumbo tomorrow to feed a family group from the Gulf Coast...the andouille is from Lafayette and the roux will be as black as the night...served with popcorn rice and cajun potato salad as all gumbos should be! It will be good..."I gar-on-tee!" (per Justin Wilson)

Best macaron spot?

I am afraid to look how much I spend at Ladurée every year...but it is worth it! I hope that when they open (positive thinking!) that it includes a tea shop that serves the Omlette
Ladurée...one of my favorite things ever! (especially their black truffle omelette)

Best macaron spot?

I agree that Lette is your best bet...but find them a little too soft...Little Next Door used to be pretty good but the last couple of times I had one of their macarons I was disappointed.

I am fortunate to be able to "commute" to Paris on a regular basis and bring home Pierre Herme and Ladurée frequently. I was told in Paris that Ladurée is looking for a location in SoCal (Third Street was mentioned) to open a store in the next year or so...I am keeping my fingers crossed! They are opening a location in Miami this year to add to their New York locations.

A related rumour I heard in Paris is that La Maison du Chocolat is looking for a location in Beverly Hills that can accommodate a retail location as well as a bakery...which for macaron lovers is a good thing as their chocolate macarons are excellent! Once again, fingers crossed!

Chicago Deep Dish Pizza in LA?

Yup...at least it was in December! It is the closest I have experienced to authentic "Chicago" deep dish in SoCal...and is still excellent. It is too bad that it is so far from home!

Does anyone else hate Bay Cities (venice)?

Agree!...and this from an Italian boy someone who has been a customer for nearly 60 years! It may be one of the best of its kind in the LA area these days...but it is a mere shadow of what it once was and that was a real Italian deli with a passion for quality. Sadly, no longer...it is now more of a fast food operation (a decent one!) with a market on the side!

What restaurant do you really really really miss that is now closed ?????

I would drive a long way for a Ship Shape Burger about now! I miss the old Citrus as well...I have been to Michel's place in D.C. a few times but it is not the same!

I also miss Scandia, Chasens, Shanghai Winter Garden, CC Browns...but especially the Cock and Bull on the Sunset Blvd.

Mountain View for Two Weeks

It has been a number of years but I will have a consulting job for two weeks in Mountain View...Most of the places I went to in the past are gone or have changed for the worse.

Any current recs in the Mountain View area for B, L and D...thanks in advance!

The Filling Station Apple Pie

My family still purchases both pumpkin and apple for Thanksgiving every year and the quality is still quite good! it does not seem that the ownership change has affected the pies!

Scandia and Chasen's - Just Another Nostalgia Reminiscense

I agree about Scandia...we used to take clients for drinks...and were usually were too full after the meatballs...but would often have the seafood platter at the bar...I miss Scandia terribly!!...but not as much as the Cock and Bull...this was my place from early childhood to the day it closed...we had our table by the fireplace near the bar...ahh the memories...Dean Martin and Richard Burton at the bar...Richard actually went around the restaurant on Christmas Eve kissing all of the ladies (including Mom!)...a Moscow Mule in a copper mug...the Welsh Rarebit...the carving station...the trifle pudding...I could go on and on! Memories!!

Camellia Red Kidney Beans

I will try Bob's...it is close to work for me so I will pick some up this week!...Do you by chance know if they will make boudain! This is one product that is only good when fresh...when I have ordered from LA, it usually is very mushy!

And when you order form Jacobs, make sure you get some of their tasso and smoked sausage as well...so, so good!!...and their bacon is incredible as well...I just had some this morning!

Camellia Red Kidney Beans

For some reason I don't care for the texture of the andouille at Huntingtons...and I have tried it a number of times...That being said, they do carry a good smoked sausage that I like to use as a side if I make my RB&R w/o andouille! I have seen it, but I have not tried Silvas...I will remedy this soon! I do like Prudhomme's andouille, but I prefer a bit more spice that I usually get from Jacobs and that from Vernons out of Lafayette...when I can get family/friends to send it to me!

Camellia Red Kidney Beans

I spent too many years in NOLA to switch beans now...but I do love me some Pinquito beans with my Santa Maria BBQ! I will check out Natraliart next week...it is closer to home than most of the other possibilities!! I currently get my andouille from Jacobs in La Place, LA and my ham hocks from a friend who smokes his own!! If I am desperate, I will use Savoies from Marcondas in the Farmers Market or the sausage from The European Sausage Shop in Beverly Hills.

I just noticed that Amazon carries Camelia red beans...6 2# bags for $20 with no shipping charge for Prime! This may be a possibility!!

If you are referring to Baja Ranch Market (formerly Kings Ranch Market), they are completely out and don't know when they will be restocked. They also checked their sister stores for me and no joy!

Camellia Red Kidney Beans

Well, once again, it is becoming difficult to get Camellia Red Beans here in SoCal. For the last couple of years, Bristol Farms has been getting it for me by special order...but now their supplier will no longer supply them...and neither do the other vendors suggested in this thread...Sigh! Does anyone have a source for them in the greater SoCal area so I don't have to use mail order from LA or Amazon and the expense (cost and shipping) to acquire them!

I need my RB&R!!
