unheavy, unnoisy inexpensive dinner within 5 miles of lincoln park

Hello Chicago Chowhounds,

By inexpensive I'm talking about less than $30 per person including entree, drink and maybe shared appetizer or dessert, also including tax & tip. By unheavy I mean fish or seafood or vegetarian options.

We like Sai Cafe on Sheffield (sushi) but want to try something different.

Unusual food is also a plus. Thoughts?

Thanks,

Dan

Alo les chowhounderres! I will be spending a few days in the abovementioned spot, in a tiny town called Excideuil. Any special recommendations for those parts? many thanks--Dan

need a quiet, cozy cheap(ish) dinner spot near union sq

by cheapish I mean under $30/person for main course, drink, and maybe a shared appetizer or desert.

quiet, interesting under $40/person

any thoughts for tonight? will go anywhere in Manhattan, though prefer not north of 86th st. Any type of food is fine, except to flourescent lights or super-heavy/greasy food. that said, cheaper is better.

quiet, cosy, L.E.S. or E. Vill

looking for a place to celebrate my wife's birthday on Fri. night. We like unusual food, but not so much that we will endure some trendy, high-pressure cutting edge spot.

Quiet Dinner E. Vill or L.E.S.

Is there anyplace to eat on a Friday night near Sunshine Cinema where i don't need a reservation and can hear what the people I'm with are actually saying? Wouldn't hurt if the food was okay, but thats secondary. Might need some ambiance, but then again i realize that just finding a quiet place is challenge enough.

Defunct FiDi spots: Rosario's and Carmela's

Just walked past Rosario's today and saw construction guys in there undoubtedly building some new paean to dining mediocrity. What the heck happened? Are they moving? Who could imagine Joe without a restaurant?

Starving For Restaurants Near Prospect Park!

Especially in need are the neighborhoods around the southern half of the park: Windsor Terrace, Prospect Park South and Prospect Lefferts Gardens: they are spiffing up and a couple of outdoor cafes would really be nice! And a decent restaurant or two inside the actual park would also be cool, no?

I had a fantastic bottle of white wine last night...Malagousia

i went there a few nights ago and tasted it. this is indeed something special. i was there with another person more sophisticated than i about wine and she too was mightily impressed.

Pushy Service at River Cafe

Went there last night for my wife's birthday, after consulting with various posts here. I don't think anyone mentioned the pushy service. It certainly didn't ruin the evening, but who needs it? I know that what we ordered was a "cup of coffee" by their standards, but for us $300 is an amount we spend maybe 2-3 times a year. While we had no rule against spending $400, having my finger steered toward the $68 wine as opposed to the $34, or my glass stolen away before i had my last sip if anything made me want to spend less money, not more.

The food was mostly good, not great--an event I was prepared for. Though I actually had to send the rock lobster back as it was not fresh. Totally disagree with those who say not sitting near the window is the same or similar. We weren't near the window and really regretted it. The view is spectacular, and its harder to look at it if the people at the table next to you think you're staring at them.

All that said, it is still a kind of kooky place, filed with tourists and New Yorkers having, mostly, celebratory dinners. Everyone seemed a bit drunk but not rowdy and it was fun to people watch and stare at the river over my neighbor's dinner.

Ali's Roti on Flatbush

b/w rutland and midwood (Q or B train to Prospect Park stop.)

this is a place in my neighborhood and while it has a steady stream of customers, they don't get the attention they deserve. they are super-friendly and the food is fresh (the cook gives away extra food at the end of the day so as not to re-use) and delicious.

Lunch Near Union Sq--A Surprising Discovery

in the last 2 months or so, i've been lucky enough to have lunch at union sq cafe 3 times, blue water grill twice and tocqueville once. while all are good, i have to say the food and overall dining experience were inversely related --am i using that expression right?--to the crowds. BWG and Tocqueville both have a $24ish prix fixe, and USC--i believe--does not. USC is always jammed and the service sometimes suffers as a result. BWG is crowded but easier to get a seat and i think the food has been slightly better.

But the big surprise was Tocqueville--empty, quiet, civilized, delicious! i am promoting it because it was so empty i worry they'll stop serving lunch or close down or something.

Nostrand Tavern

It may be awhile before I'm able to try it, but I am a near-local (live in PLG) and just advertised it (and chowhound) on our neighborhod Yahoo discussion group. So hopefully someone will try it soon and give a report!
