Any place serve Vienna Beef brand hot dogs in Calgary/YYC?
Where on earth did you get the nuclear green relish that is also a trademark element of a Chicago dog?
Where can I get Hutterite chickens in Calgary or area??
I believe that Chicken on the Way uses their own chickens. If you dig back into the history books, or at least the articles on their wall; COTW was formed as a way for them to sell the chickens they were raising. As far as I know, they still raise their own.
Craft beer Market, Calgary....What a disappointment
Was in there a week or two ago for the first time. Menu prices are laughably high; food quantity looked small for the price. We could see into the kitchen from where we were sitting; everything (and I do mean EVERYTHING) is pulled out of plastic containers and plated. In all fairness, it may have been made fresh that morning and they are strict on portion control....
Service was mediocre at best.
Good luck; from our experience we'd wait a decade or two before going back.
Olive Chicken - Calgary
Where exactly is this place? All I've got to work with is 10th Ave and a Korean strip mall.. Which quadrant of the city are we talking about? What cross street?
Where are the Calgary Food trucks?
A 20 minute wait for street food is pretty inexcusable.
Given the long waits, and what appears to be a brewing issue as to where the trucks can go; the food truck movement in Calgary may be dead before it ever gets off the ground.
Any "Montreal-style" Pizza in Calgary?
Don't know if I've ever seen one like that in Calgary, but if you find it, I want a slice :)
JoJo's BBQ - Calgary
I passed on the ribs. There is only so much one man can (or should) eat :)
JoJo's BBQ - Calgary
We managed to stop by on Saturday for lunch. We ordered a pulled pork sandwich, a brisket sandwich, fritters and garlic fries.
The fritters were stellar; the garlic fries were very, very good (with a LOT of garlic..share these or you'll be alone for a day waiting for them to wear off...).
The sandwiches were a bit of a let down. First of all...they came on a decently stout bun that worked very well. No worry about sogginess. But we found the meat disappointing. Not enough smoke, and served almost cold. I'm sure that there are a ton of logistical issues with working out of a small van like that. But, we know that the meat is "smoked" on site. I think one should expect that it should be fresh for the lunch rush. This seems to have been smoked and sliced earlier and then just stored until needed.
I wish them all the best. They seem to know how to run the PR machine (there was a Herald photographer waiting patiently for photo ops). The sides were great, I just think they need to pay more attention to the meat.
For my money, I'll stick to Holy Smoke.
Sweetgrass Market (CGY) Saved?
I was under the impression that Wurst was going to take that location and open their second restaraunt/pub there. Of course, that may have fallen by the wayside as they haven't managed to get their first location (4th street; the old WIldwood building) open.
CHARCUT Roast House Calgary
Don't let the menu prices fool you. There are some outstanding values to be had at Charcut. We often go and just graze off the starters. The pickles are great, as are the olives. We have never NOT ordered the pigs head mortadella; it's way too good to be ignored.
Best Pho in Calgary
Pho is soup.
Picture a big (sometimes bathtub sized) bowl of broth with noodles... add in the meat(s) of your choice , beef (which is just that), rare beef (raw but the hot broth cooks it to a rare state), etc (stuff that you probably are referring to.. tripe, tendon). Throw in some a bit sliced onion, bean sprouts, a squirt of lime....
With really, really good pho, the meat is the least important part of it. The broth is what really matters.
Calgary sausage and biscuit gravy
Sadly, biscuits and gravy don't exist in Calgary. Nor does a decent chicken fried steak.
I ended going to Chili's last week for Tex Mex and thinking they didn't suck nearly as much as memory tells me they do.
Sometimes we have to make some compromises to survive without some of the regional foods of other areas.
Five Guys Canadian Menu? [moved from Prairie Provinces]
I was in the Kalispell one last summer and I don't recall hot dogs. Mind you, I didn't pay that much attention to the menu.
Five Guys Canadian Menu? [moved from Prairie Provinces]
I've been in 5 or 6 Five Guys (in both Canada and the USA) and never seen a hot dog on the menu in any of them.
Where in the USA did you find hot dogs?
Fergus & Bix, Marda Loop, Cgy
When F&B first opened up, it was pretty good. Unfortunately, they seemed to lose their opening kitchen staff pretty quick and started turning out below average bar food at above average prices.
IIRC, the people behind F&B were the people that started the Original Joes chain and F&B was their next project after they sold off OJ.
The fact that F&B seems successful in its Westhills location has more to do with lack of competition than anything else, IMO.

Village Cantina Closed? YYC
It was sold a few months ago to the owner of Salt & Pepper. I imagine that they're just going to turn it into one of those...

Kingsland Farmer's Market: Highly recommend!
Sounds like you've gotten pretty familiar with this market, so..
Is there any actual produce available? or is it all just prepared foods?
Chicken on the way.
I never made it to the one in Cluny; if it had been right on the highway, I would have been tempted. Last time I was down that way (Xmas), I didn't see any signs for it, so I'm assuming (maybe incorrectly) that it is no more....
Over Easy Breakfast - Calgary
Just thought I'd bump this thread back up.
We stopped in on Sunday afternoon (1:30 or so). Place was still busy, about a 10 minute wait for a table.
This was the first time we've been to Over Easy. I'm not a huge "go out for breakfast kind of guy", generally because I'm always underwhelmed.
Once we were seated, I was somewhat surprised by the depth of the menu, quite a large and varied selection for a diner style place. Looking around at the other tables, I saw a lot of good looking food.
I ended up defaulting to my standard breakfast out treat; eggs benedict. I have to say, this was probably the best egss benny I've had. Their hollandaise sauce seems a bit lighter than normal, but in a very good way. Eggs had nice dark orange yolks. The side potatoes were outstanding, perfect texture, nicely herbed and not at all greasy.
Everyone at our table enjoyed their food; a chorizo omelet, and a savoury crepe. It was interesting to see some of the other dishes go by. Some truly amazing looking plates (zillion dollar doughnut... wow... looked large enough to feed a football team).
I'd go back here in a heartbeat the next time the breakfast mood strikes.

Best Pub Food - Calgary
Maybe I caught Local 002 on a bad night.
Having heard lots of good about them and the other "Locals" we stopped in there once. Indifferent service, although if we were younger/trendier, we felt we would have received better service. Food was marginally above average and portion size small for the price.
Haven't been back; there's lots of decent pubs in this town without having to give a second chance to one.
Back on to the good:
The Garrison over by My Favourite Ice Cream Shop. Interesting menu, pretty much seems like nothing comes in frozen or in a can. Never been disappointed when we've gone there.
Buying a Carving Fork-YYC
In the past, at this time of the year, the Bay downtown is a great choice. A lot less people than you'll find the in the mall; and as the flagship store, they tend to have everything in stock.
Very good restaurant in Calgary?
A few of the places we've frequented for nice food:
Divino
Alloy
Charcut - may be too noisy for a "romantic" night.
best pizza in calgary?
Well, dammit...I've driven by this place a thousand times and never noticed it. If it rivals Spiros and hits a lower price point, I'm going to have to try it. The only complaint I have with Spiros is the price...
5 Guys Burgers in Calgary?
Managed to sneak in between waves of customers for lunch today myself. Burger was good, although I've had better 5 Guys elsewhere. The cajun fries (btw...anyone order regular fries? seems like we all had cajun..) were good and plentiful. I may go to regular fries the next time, the cajun loses their thrill halfway through the bag.
They seemed to have 100 people working the grill, service was pretty decent. Price is still a bit steep for a fast food burger, but at least it tastes like there is some quality in it. Knock $2 off the total burger/fry/soda combo and it'd become a heavy hitter on the quality/value scale.
Margaritas in Calgary?
I thought the marg's at Tu Tierra were good by Calgary standards, but the bar really isn't that high here.
When I'm at Tu Tierra, I usually order a Negra Modelo.

Margaritas in Calgary?
There are no good margaritas in Calgary.
I wish I was being facetious, but what passes for a margarita in this town is bad tequila cut with bar lime mix.
Having said that...if anyone else knows of a decent margarita , I'm in....
Calgary where can I go for desserts?
The last time we stopped in at the Chocolate Bar was the last time we will stop in there. Deserts were all uniformly stale and overchilled. At their price point, there is no excuse.
One week in Phoenix...what to eat?
Thanks for all the suggestions. Lots of interesting options. Nice job of keeping your tags and map up to date as well. Very, very helpful.
One week in Phoenix...what to eat?
What won't we eat??? Well..hardcore vegetarian is probably out. Otherwise, nothing is off the table. Tex-Mex, Mex-Mex, Chinese, Italian, Steak, Seafood, continental...etc, all good.
Diners, Pubs, casual places, white table cloths... all equally welcomed. We'll have a car and a GPS so getting out of the downtown area isn't a concern.
I have no idea what the culinary universe in Phoenix is? Anyone doing anything unique food wise in the area? I'm assuming that there would be a strong Mexican food presence, but I have no idea if some interesting fusions exist?
I would like to hope that in a week of having to eat in restaurants 2/3 times a day, I can say that I have hit some of the good "locals only" type places; that I've got a feel for what makes Phoenix from a foodie perspective.
As an aside... any good brew-pubs or local beers? One of the biggest challenges in visiting somewhere for the first time is finding a decent beer (my preference being brown ales..); I'm not particularly enamored with mass produced American beers (sorry...we're Canadians...different beer thing entirely than Miller Lite...).
One week in Phoenix...what to eat?
We're going to be in PHX for a week at the start of December. Probably staying somewhere around the convention center, but will have a rental car.
We eat just about anything and at any price point. Where would you recommend?
