Sichuan River

We finally made it over. We split the Chong Qing Pickled Fish, which was huge, easily enough for two people. The sauce was spicy (hot), but not excessive. You could definitely taste the 'ma' and 'la', and a vague pickle-like flavour. Would definitely eat again. Service was solid, and it was not at all crowded for lunch.

The old Tien Jin sign is still up (at least when we were there), in case you're looking for a new sign.

I hope they do all right. The table next to us was griping about how 'it wasn't as good as it was' and 'what happened to the buffet?'

WTF, People! Wink - NOT Hungry by a Looooong Shot

Heh. We also made two regrettable visits to Contigo. Never again.

The quintessential sour beers at WF Domain

By the way, "Beer Fest" is going on at Central Market. If you buy more than $25 of beer, you get 20% off. They don't seem to be advertising that fact much which may explain why their beer aisles are still so stocked up, at least at the central location.

I miss toppings bars too. Burger Tex on Guadalupe (the 'bulgogi burger' one) still has a toppings bar though!

According to this, they're actually pretty good:

(On the other hand, I don't think I've seen a town with so many perfect scores....)

Austin Meetup

I was at SH as recently as 8 Feb, and the owners and food were definitely the same. I was quite satisfied. The older gentleman did seem rather depressed; it's never near crowded, so they could be hurting...

Just noticed Sentelli's Bakery on 12th next to ACC closed. There's a coffee shop there now.

Biryani Pot - 12407 N Mopac

I've been twice for lunch. Really enjoyed it. Can't seem to get away from their hearty lunch specials, which change every day: basically a thali in a school-cafeteria-style lunch tray, a lot of food.

They've got some interesting items on the menu I've not seen anywhere else (outside India, that is). Ordering off menu is significantly more expensive than the lunch specials.

Owners quite friendly, very helpful. Definitely will be back. NOTE: if you're in the mood for an early weekday lunch, it seems they're now open at 11:30 instead of 11. We showed up "early", and they still nicely served us anyway, though with some confusion.

I had the same experience. Toss in the grumpy service, and that was it for me.

Oh well, still looking for seasoned fried chicken that won't hurt my budget....!

They seem to do very well with duck. I really enjoyed their "Braised Duck with Beer Sauce", though I'm not certain actual beer was used (language issue, perhaps). I like the red oil wontons, but found "Chung's Dumplings" more flavourful. Given the time it took for them to come out, I think they make their dumplings/wontons from scratch, rather than microwaving.

Was the orange chicken in a "goopy" sauce? I had a similar order at Asia Cafe once and found the sauce a little too sweet and very thick, though it wasn't really that bad.

An Indo-Chinese place just opened on the drag where Hai Ky used to be - "Sauce N Spice". Looks interesting, but I've not been able to make it there yet.

Spice Mystery off of Mopac / North of Parmer - who's tried it??

Yesterday I saw their banner by sheer coincidence around noon. Feeling bold, I decided to try. Not totally horrible, but not worth returning to. One couple left as I entered, we were the only customers. No bad odors, waitress quite friendly, as you mentioned, no sign of Hasselhoff-sahib.

Meat heavy, each meat dish was far more "soup" than meat. Daal undercooked, strangely super dense jamuns, flavorless eggplant. The saag and daal were suprisingly spicy though, a nice surprise. Terrible "fresh" naan.

I've lived here most of my life and have yet to encounter first rate greek food, maybe Mykonos from 20 years back, I don't know. If there's a great Greek place currently out there that I'm missing, please correct me!

spiciest dishes?

Thai Kitchen (the one on Guadalupe is better) has a special "5-pepper" menu with titles like "Hurts So Good" and "Nuclear Fish". I haven't tried that menu in 20 years, so I can't comment on what it's like today, but when I tried it, I thought my innards were melting.

I find Asia Cafe inconsistent heat-wise, but they've got some pretty intense items. A recent discovery, Sichuan House, seems more reliable and a bit more intense in the heat department (usually I'm sweating for the rest of the day).

I've sadly yet to encounter any Indian food here that's induced much of a sweat, but I'd recommended giving Asiana or Maharaja Cafe a shot (and asking the friendly proprietors' advice on the hot items).

As was mentioned, Texas Chili Parlour's XXX items are worth a try. I haven't been there in about 20 years, but remember the XXX chili as scary hot.

Szechuan House

Fans of Asia Cafe / A+A might want to check out this relatively new restaurant at the SE corner of Burnet and Kramer. The family there are incredibly nice; exceptionally good, friendly service - almost cloying.

I ordered P10 ("Beef Tripe and Pork Blood In Hot Pot Sauce"). They seemed shocked (but in a nice way) that a gringo would order this. If this item is anything to go by, be warned: when they say something is spicy (hot), they really mean it. Six hours later and I'm still sweating. Awesome!

They have a cold dish "bar" with about eight items, including "pig face" (probably cheek), pig ear, beef omasa, and the like. You can choose three portions for $6.95. Interesting...

Here's the menu:
