Any good places to get Paella in Queens

El Prado is surely missed. I cannot seem to find another place to take it's place in Queens. Any suggestions?

New "Burmese Cafe" in Jackson Heights

Could this be the SRI of Burmese?

My ancestry is East Indian. I was born in Guyana. Anyways, we use green mango to cook with. We usually use it in seafood dishes... adds a bit of zest and sour.
The green mango is best if it's very young. When you can cut right through the seed.. by slicing... the seed is underdeveloped and ressembles a large white bean but harder but you can beak it in two using your hands... YUM

Come to think of it one evening we ordered the shrimp sambai. It arrived cold and undercooked. we sent it back and they brought out another order and didn't charge us for it. The roti chanai is amazing and very inexpensive.

There is Pinang Malaysian on Queens Blvd. Really good. Took an uncle from Malaysia there and I asked him "how does it compare with the food in Malaysia" and he said "It is really authenic and delicious.
It's also a beauitful restaurant with a very helpful staff.and if I am not mistaken you have a full view of the kitchen from the seating area.

Jaya on Baxter is great. When the weather permits they have outdoor seating, staff are extemely attentive and friendly. There is a small bar around the corner that has karaoke several times a week for those interested in hitting the mic.

Is this Jaiya in Jackson Heights?
Are they still open? I used to eat here before discovering Sri.

I would recommend also El Coyote on Hillside Avenue and I think 178th Street. In the summer their outdoor patio seating in the back is very nice. Takes you back to Oaxaca, my favorite Mexican food destination.

My only complaint is that they are inconsistent with their drink prices.

On our first visit, which was July 2006 Saturday evening we sat out back and the margaritas were six bucks.
On our second visit we went with another couple and our margaritas were seven bucks.
On our third visit we went for lunch, my husband and myself and their margaritas were eight dollars.

How you figure?

But aside from feeling as though you got ripped off for drinks at lunch.. We are not 70 dollar lunch people.

The lunch specials are not bad 4.50 - 7.00 but still the portions are small.

I like their scallop dish cooked in garlic.

and YES the chef and owner is Oaxacan.

I have to say. I found La Baraka through this board and we have gone three times since. We went for my husband's birthday in August last. After we left the owner ran out and gave him a bottle of wine.

The food is fabulous and the service is wonderful. You really feel great and want this meal to last forever. The decor is very interesting. The front room has many copper pieces.. mostly pots and tea kettles and well that's about all I remember after their great martinis.

My favorite dish there by far is the hangar steak. It was truly amazing. I brought home the leftovers and my husband ate it cold the next morning. Now, I am not one for cold steak but I had a bite.. figure.. hey, I need a bite before he eats all of it.

I will definitely return. We both felt we were eating there too much and decided to try other places but still.. we're going back soon...

Do try La Baraka... and no, I do not work for them. Their twilight menu is a great deal.. It's the only time we've gone. We have a 3 year old and always need to hire a babysitter to go out and eat so the earlier the better for us.

Best Gyro?

The Romano's we ate at was on the corner of 33rd Street and Broadway and yes sir it was empty.

Best Gyro?

Okay, Seriously.. If you like spam then I think Romano's is the place for you. If you like frozen soggy pizza then I think Romano's is the place for you.
We ate there eary Saturday evening and the place was empty, the service was great but their fries were under done, their roast potatoes were more like boiled and drenched in oil, their Greek salad contained not one but two olives and two chunks of feta.

Their gyro meat looked like spam and I am not kidding. I don't know what happened between your visit and mine less than two weeks apart.

Their souvlaki was passable but we couldn't figure out if we were eating lamb or pork.

Next time I am going to Nicks on 9th avenue.

What's the problem with the foodtv website?

FoodNetwork website has given me problems for ages.. I am wondering whether or not it is just super busy or just needs debugging but I have been having regular problems with.
