FAT Traveler's Profile
Fresno on a Saturday night
You could also try Armenian food-very popular in Fresno. On Blackstone, just south of Herndon Ave. is George's and, a bit less expensive, is AJ's on Maroa, just North of Shaw. AJ's has a very modest "corkage", you you might bring your own bottle or you can use their wine list.
Yalla Yalla in Fresno
Really? No one has been there yet? It looks like I'll be the first to try it. Report to follow.
Yalla Yalla in Fresno
Mrs. FT and I have been meaning to try Yalla Yalla, the new Mediterranean restaurant operated by the owner of Cracked Pepper Bistro. The new place is located in the old Bentley's near Friant Rd. and Ft. Washington. Has anyone tried it and what's suggested? We called about the corkage and it's a whopping (for Fresno) $20, so hopefully the wine list includes some reasonable selections.
Great Curry In Sabah
How about a location. What city are you talking about? An address would be helpful.
Singapore Casino Restaurants
Well....all those prices are out of my league. The reference (above) to Osia sounds interesting and certainly more like my "price point". I've eaten at Batali's restaurants in New York many times and I was always impressed at the value for the food. Mrs. Traveler and I could get away, with dinner and wine, for under US $200.
Thanks to all for the input.
Singapore Casino Restaurants
Just bumping. Really, nobody has gone to Marina Sands for food? Is the Mario Batali restaurant open?
Singapore Casino Restaurants
I see a post about Restaurant Cut, but has anyone tried the other casino restaurants at Marina Sands? I'll be back in Singapore in January and was planning on trying the new places. One complication is that I'm usually dining alone so restaurants featuring eating bars or communal tables are always preferable, though generally hard to find in Asia.
Italian in Fresno?
One other possibility is OGGI. It's not so well known, it's new--it's in the Tower District--Fresno's tiny little SOMA (SF) or Village (NYC). It's on the corner of Van Ness and Olive Ave.--somewhat closer than Parma. Great Italian food, great service, and a nice wine list at a somewhat lower price-point.
Auckland & Queenstown
Otago Girl: We did end up eating lunch at Saffron in Arrowtown and it was great. Thanks for the tip, I never would have visited Arrowtown, but it turned out to be a charming little town. We ended up in Wanaka, but did eat at the Botswana Butchery (strange name). It was fine, but not terrific, and relatively expensive. We were in Wanaka five nights and I wouldn't rate any of the places we ate there as great, though because of the BYO policy we ate at Relishes twice and it was quite OK.
Auckland & Queenstown
SEA-Kiwi, thanks. That helps a lot and I've put Clooney on the list.
Auckland & Queenstown
Thanks Otago Girl, we'll be sure to try at least one of them and report back. There's surprisingly little information about the Auckland dining scene so I imagine we'll stay with the suggestions in my original post.
Auckland & Queenstown
Will be spending a few nights in each of the above cities for the first time and we're looking for the three or four top rated restaurants in each location. We're visiting from California, so we actually have about all the mid-market Asian food you can imagine and we're looking for more NZ or contemporary cuisine. Seafood and lamb specifically, to go with the great NZ wines.
I've read the forum and it sounds like, in Auckland, the picks are Kermadec, and French Cafe, but in Queenstown it seems everthing I've read is for inexpensive eats. Nothing wrong with inexpensive, but we're looking for the "must not miss" places.
How about a list of your top 3-4 "high-end" places?
Thanks, and we're looking forward to visiting your beautiful country, drinking NZ wines and visiting with all the friendly folks.
Fresno: Where to find the best...?
GMK, I know where I like to get salads in Fresno, but I'm not sure what you're looking for. You would like to have "more variety than a salad bar or a sit down, full service restaurant"? What, exactly, else is there? Sorry, I'm not familiar with Plutos, but obviously it's not a salad bar or a full service restaurant.
For full service, sit down places, regretably, Cheescake Factory is at the top of my list, followed closely by the seafood salad at Limelight.
Fresno: Where to find the best...?
I don't know anything about a Fresno oyster bar, but for "high end" Italian, I always hear good things about Parma--NW corner of Marks & Herndon. I haven't been for a while, since the prices are pretty high, but everything I have had there was very good.
Bentley's Bistro-Fresno
GMK, first of all, I'm glad you had a good experience at Brunch. Mrs FT and I ate brunch there about a year ago and the service was so bad we decided to NEVER go back! It was awful--you know the type, the waiter absolutely refuses to make eye contact with his customers. We hate that. Anyway, I look forward to responses to your post--maybe we'll chance it again.
Where to eat in Halifax
Rah: I'm not clear on this. Are you saying Chives is good but expensive or do you really mean "it never fails to disappoint"? Should I try it, or not?
Casual Options on Denman/Davie/Robson
Tapastree is absolutely the best option. Everyplace in that area seems "casual" though.
Looking for good Indian Food in Fresno
Hire a driver if you need to, but the ONLY place for Indian food in Central California is North India Grill. I know it's in Clovis and I hate that aspect of it too, but it's absolutely the best. We were there Saturday night with six people and ordered the Butter Chicken (2), a couple of lamb dishes, Bangen Barta (eggplant) and a spinach dish, along with garlic naan and pilau rice. Everything was great and the service was perfect. We take our own wine and the corkage is $10. Altogether a teriffic experience.
Who do you want to survive? [Fresno]
Sweet Ginger Thai (Shaw & Marks)
Lily's (Blackstone & Shaw)
Cracked Pepper (Mission Village)
North India Grill (Clovis)
Any suggestians for Catania?
We're joining a Rick Steves tour of Sicily in May, but will arrive a few days early in Catania. Any suggestions for great food? We love all Italian food, but are looking forward to Seafood while on the island.
Best places in Vancouver?
Wow! A Chowhound that doesn't eat seafood or drink wine? You are unique! congratulations. You should have your choice of places if you will spend $60-$100 without alchohol. I think "West" should foot the bill.
Fresno--Elements
I used to frequent George's location at Marks and Bullard for lunch. Since I've recently moved I don't get over to that neighborhood as much, but driving past that corner I see the restaurant is now named Elements. Has anyone tried it? What cuisine is that? Is it good?
Prime Rib in Fresno
Welcome to the Board, Jeff. I'm with you--sometimes I just feel like prime rib is the best possible "comfort food". I think you can't beat the Limelite (Palm & Shaw) for the prime rib dinner. The service, price, and food put it at the top for Fresno, IMHO. The ambience is kinda "1980s", but otherwise it's top notch. Like PB, I hesitate to bring up a chain, but my 2nd favorite is Fleming's prime rib special on Sunday nights. Pretty darn good prime rib and a teriffic value.
Fresno area - Closures and Changes
I'm glad to see this corrected. You may be thinking of Livingstons or maybe the Landmark, but not the Limelight. The Limelight is a really well run family business on Shaw near Palm--the owner is always there. Their food may be a throwback to the 80's, but it's properly prepared , well served, and fairly priced. Their Prime Rib is as good as any in Fresno.
Armenian Food in Fresno?
The newest contender is Lily's. It's taken over the space of the old City Cafe on the NE corner of Blackstone & Shaw. Great food and service. they have no liquor license, so you can bring your own without corkage. I've only been once, but the Lula Kabob lunch plate (with salad & bulgar) was excellent.

Prague and Budapest
Just returned from budapest and had several really good meals. As noted by several others, Cafe Bouchon was excellent. Another place with modern, minamilist interiors and excellent food and service is Fausto's Osteria, Dohany U. #5. A very nice, upscale italian menu and wine list at quite reasonable prices. The third "find" was Indigo Indian Restaurant, located at Jokai U. #13. Reasonable prices for both food and wine, very nice service and a great break from Hungarian food.
Fresno Thai
We haven't been there for several years, but it sounds like it's time for a re-visit. It's closer to our new home than SG, so that's a plus too. BTW, do you know if TRO has a "corkage" policy? We try to take our own wine these days and don't mind paying a reasonable fee.
Fresno Thai
I'm with Alan-the food's just not great at Thai Palms. I really want to like Thai Palms since it's very close to home but the food's just not that good. Sweet Ginger, which is a big hike from home, is still our "go to" place for Thai. When I do go to TP (alone for lunch because my family will only go to SG) I have the Spicy Basil Chicken or the Green Curry Chicken--those are the best two of the many items I've tried. The Spicy Eggplant with Pork is the 3rd item I'd order.
Sweet Ginger, on the other hand, has the best Mango Salad, Green Curry Chicken, and Salmon with Ginger/Garlic Sauce along with lots of other great items.
Mid-range pasta in Vancouver?
The Trattoria Italian Kitchen at 4th and Burrard has teriffic pasta. Try the Spagetti with Kobe Meatballs--it's in your price range. This is a sister to the Italian Kitchen on Alberni, downtown, but it's prices are much cheaper. Also note, that and the lunch and dinner menus at the 4th St. location are identical. The pasta platter for two is, I think, $16-$18 each, but the better choice is the carne & pesce platter for two. It's a lot of food but if you want more, order the above noted spagetti to go with it. Overall a great addition to Vancouver's dining scene.
BTW, no reservations accepted.
Downtown Vancouver-Best Eggs Benedict
We have friends visiting and want to go out for breakfast downtown. In the past we've always liked the eggs benedict at Milestone's on Robson but I'm just wondering if there's a better alternative. Any favorites out there?
