Best, Simplest way to enjoy a fried egg?

i agree with butter and salt. i think the most important thing with any egg dish is seasoning it well. and definitely toast, to soak up the creamy yolk!!

Clinton Hill food recommendations please!

i actually read a review of this place in the NYT a little while back...looks great and can't wait to try it!

Clinton Hill food recommendations please!

Hi, I'm getting ready to move to Clinton Hill, and am so excited! I would love suggestions as to where to go for...well, everything: cheap eats, fancy restaurants, eateries, grocery stores, markets, street vendors, you name it, I'm interested. Thanks so much!

Puerto Rico dining suggestions please!!

All of the Puerto Rico posts are pretty outdated and deserted, so I decided a new one was needed.

I'm going to Puerto Rico for about 4 days with my mom and sister. We are staying in San Juan, although I'm sure we'll be traveling around a little.

I need any suggestions you have! Breakfast, lunch dinner....cheap and pricey alike. Don't hold back!! I want some good authentic Puerto Rican fare.

Also, my sister is a vegetarian, so if you happen to know of any places that offer a particularly good array of vegetarian dishes, that would be great.

Thanks!!

Help!!!! Added too much pepper

the lemon thing totally works!

Dinner party help!

Hi I'm hosting a dinner party for a few of my friends, and I have been searching the web for food ideas. I want something pretty easy yet flavorful and delicious. I know I want to make Greek potatoes, which are lemony and garlicky and really tasty. I would prefer to have chicken as my main dish. I know it's boring, but this is really my first dinner party and would like to make it easy on myself. But I'd definitely be open to a fool-proof fish recipe.

So main dish ideas to go with the Greek potatoes? Thanks!

Any good tomato sauce in a jar?

completely agree about Rao's, it's the best jarred sauce I've had.

New Trader Joe's yea/nay thread

I agree about chicken-less strips, and same goes for the vegetarian beef strips. i'm not a vegetarian, and i don't think they necessarily taste like chicken and beef, but they have a good flavor and texture. my cousin made a wonderful Indian stew with them (i believe he used a TJ's jarred Indian sauce).

I have to bring up the mushroom and black truffle flatbread again, because it is probably my all-time favorite item at TJ's. I could honestly imagine getting served this in a good Italian restaurant. Oh, and it is just plain ADDICTIVE.

the pumpkin bread mix is really yummy, i added chocolate chips to it, and it was more cake than bread!

Old stand-bys: frozen mac and cheese, guacamole, chocolate dippers, frozen teriyaki chicken, refridgerated mushroom ravioli and gorgonzola ravioli.

Good Indian buffet in DC??

My sister is in town, and as we both LOVE Indian food, I would like to take her for Indian for lunch. She's a vegetarian, I'm not, and something reasonably priced would be nice (around $11?). I'm in the NW, so something on the red line would be best. I've seen Indique get good reviews, but do they have a lunch buffet? Thanks!

Canned pumpkin recipes?

one vote for the pumpkin dump cake. i've been making this for years, and it is DELICIOUS. i actually have different measurements for a couple of the ingredients so it makes a more party size dish.

1-29 oz. can pure pumpkin
1-12 oz. can evaporated milk
3 eggs
1 cup sugar
1 tsp. salt
3 tsp. cinnamon
1 box yellow cake mix
1 cup chopped pecans
3/4 cup melted margarine

Mix together the first 6 ingredients, then follow the rest of the directions as above. It's a huge hit, and better eaten as a dessert pudding than cake. just scoop it out, and it's AMAZING.

Your Favorite Fresh Tomato Recipes

marinate roughly chopped tomatoes (juices, seeds and all), in some olive oil, a little cider vinegar, salt and pepper. then eat it on the side of...well, anything. so simple and yummy.

Sushi to impress a New Yorker

Thank you all for your suggestions. Will be going to either Kaz Sushi Bistro or Sushi Taro, mostly because I want to stay in D.C. I certainly didn't mean to offend anyone by suggesting that New York has superior sushi, (as I mentioned, I don't even eat sushi, so I wouldn't be in a position to judge!). Just meant that my niece has eaten and enjoyed lots of sushi in New York and I wanted her to have an enjoyable experience here to help her feel at home in D.C. and of course to celebrate. Thanks again for all the replies.

Sushi to impress a New Yorker

My niece just moved to D.C. from New York and I am looking for someplace to take her for dinner to celebrate the move and her new job. She loves sushi and I want to show her that she can still get great sushi in D.C. but since I don't eat sushi, I don't know if that's really true. (I am willing to be flexible about finding something else on the menu for me to eat - I like most asian food). I have read prior posts on this board and there seems little consensus regarding good D.C. sushi places or asian restaurants for that matter. If you have a recommendation can you please include a few words about why you like the place you are recommending. Thanks!

Yays and nays from Trader Joe's, lately [OLD]

oh also their frozen french toast, when prepared in the toaster oven, is actually pretty good I think. and their chocolate dipper....YUMMM. I don't even like hard chocolate chip cookies usually, but these are addictive.

Yays and nays from Trader Joe's, lately [OLD]

my all time favorites of theirs: the guacamole (i love how fresh it is in the air-tight container!), the frozen macaroni and cheese (the pasta is never mushy and it really is so cheesy and tasty), and the frozen teriaki chicken, SO TASTY!!
other yays: their goddess dressing (I actually like their version better than the Amy's one), the Tzatziki dip, the frozen spinach and artichoke dip (it's so thick and melty when warmed), the refrigerated turkey meatballs (really tasty and good texture), the frozen naan

nays: really not many, but i do have to say that I tried the refrigerated chicken marsala awhile ago and remember really liking it. I got it again recently and it was awful! I guess the sauce was okay, but the chicken breading was so soggy, and fell right off the chicken. I couldn't finish it. I've also never been impressed with their breads, or their tomato sauces. I always found that they had an inconsistent taste and grainy texture. and I gotta say, I wasn't impressed by the frozen individual quiches. I thought the crust was bland and too crumbly.

Venice: The Great Binge of '09

Thank you Joe, you have found your calling as a truly talented food writer. I'll be going to Venice for only a few days in a week or so, but I'll keep your experiences in mind when I go searching for meals. Cheese is one of my weaknesses, and I am indescribably excited to sample authentic and exotic Italian cheeses!

We did It! (Sortof) Roasted Pistachio Gorgonzola Risotto

loved reading this...very Bridget Jones-esque! I'm sure that if I attempted to make it, my experience would be quite similar to this.

Has anyone made the chestnut-honey cake from Oct (?) 2008 issue of Cucina Italiana?

wow, that's unfortunate, but thanks for sharing the results. your reasoning sounds very practical.

Eggs - what's your favourite preparation (dinner)

i would love to read the articles from that week's Dining section, but I can't seem to find any recent articles on eggs in the NYT online! can someone maybe post a link with one of the articles??

Children's Books that Feature Food

Thunder Cake by Patricia Polacco--a great book where a girl visits her grandma's farm and as a thunderstorm comes, the girl is scared, so the grandma helps her make a chocolate cake to distract her. she has the little girl gathering eggs from the chickens, etc., and then mixing all the ingredients together and baking it. the grandma uses the time in between the lightning and thunder to measure how much time they have left to make the cake. and of course the book comes with the recipe for thunder cake (I'm so sure i made it as a kid with my mom). Patricia Polacco is fabulous!

Children's Books that Feature Food

oh wow i totally remember those descriptions in Heidi! It just sounded like such a simple but perfect meal, it was definitely a fantasy of mine to eat exactly that in a wood cabin.

Eggs - what's your favourite preparation (dinner)

oh wow, i love Avoglemono! I tried making it once from a very simple recipe, where i whisked together an egg, lemon juice and pecorino. i then tempered the mixture with, and eventually added it to, simmering chicken broth, and finally added orzo. it was ok, but nothing like the avoglemono i've had in an actual greek restaurant. anyone have any suggestions?

NYC Delis

My first time having pastrami (any kind of pastrami) was at Katzs deli, and it was an experience I'll always remember. The cooks let me taste it on a plate, and it was hot and juicy and literally melted in my mouth. My mouth is watering just thinking about it now. When I'm in a grocery store, or even at a local diner/deli, I refuse to get pastrami, just because I'm sure I'll be disappointed. I'm waiting for my next visit to Katz's to have another magical experience.

Has anyone made the chestnut-honey cake from Oct (?) 2008 issue of Cucina Italiana?

I beg to differ Ruth! I'm not trying to pick a battle, but just for the sake of defending Italian desserts: tiramisu, cannoli, biscotti?? the first two are pretty rich indeed, and though biscotti is not in your face, the buttery texture and subtle flavors make it a very enjoyable treat. i say, make the cake!

Favorite sugar cereal? :)

wow midlife, that is pretty elitist of you to put down sugar cereal. ANYTHING about food can be deemed chow-worthy. if the food is a part of a person's life, especially one's childhood (like sugar cereal) , then it is worth talking about the nostalgia and memories attached to that food. sugar cereal is something that most everyone can relate to eating as a kid, and there's nothing wrong with having fun talking about it.

Favorite sugar cereal? :)

I LOVE Frosted Mini Wheats, but it must be with milk, AND it must be before they get too soggy. I usually put only 8 in the milk at a time. It's very specific :)

Also, does anyone remember the Rice Krispies Treats cereal, not to be confused with regular Rice Krispies cereal? It was so delicious!

And last but not least, the Kashi Go Lean Crunch cereal, although full of healthy grains, is quite sugary and addictive.

Good chicken and corn soup

Where's Odenton, and what's their version like? Is there anything maybe more in the city?

Recs for Tel Aviv, pls

hey, there's a restaurant called Yotvata right in downtown Tel Aviv on the beachfront. It's not fancy nor expensive, but the food is fantastic, seeing as how they get all of their dairy products from the Yotvata Kibbutz. I've been there several times and have always been happy.

I definitely recommend the cheeseplate, where you can get either 3 or 6 cheeses. I have always shared the 6 cheese platter with a bunch of people, and we chose herb cream cheese, labeneh (which was particularly creamy and delicious), Hungarian cheese, among others. Last time I was there, I got one of the best salads I've ever had. It had warm marinated mushrooms, roasted red peppers and sunflower seeds piled high on chopped lettuce and cucumber. A hearty amount of shredded goat cheese was on top (it was a not chevre; it was almost the texture of shredded mozzerella, but softer. it basically melted in my mouth, and it had an amazingly tangy flavor). They offered me lemon juice and olive oil to sprinkle on it, and that's really all it needed. It was so incredibly flavorful that I ate the whole thing despite its enormity.

YUMM!

New products at Trader Joe's ...

oh wow, i'm in israel for a couple months, and as amazing as the food is, i definitely miss exploring my trader joes!!
