ISO Burgers, Fries and Shakes in SF

Jack's Prime in San Mateo! Every Tuesday after 530pm, its $10 for a delicious burger, shoestring fries and a Double Rainbow milkshake. One of my favorites is the Ultimate Bacon - which comes with smoked applewood bacon mayo - yes, you saw it here, I said bacon mayo! If the line/wait is too long for you, you can enjoy a local Trumer Pils on tap or get it to go!

The only downer is the parking lot is way too small, so either get there early or late - otherwise you will be trolling for a space.

Other than that -- now you have a great reason to visit the Peninsula!

Tamales in the Peninsula

Year Round, Every Saturday, starting at 9am, there's a tamale stall at the Farmers Market - College of San Mateo. Exit Hillsdale off of 92.

Excellent tamales, for $2 bucks each. They have pork, chicken, spicy pork, spicy chicken, beef, cheese & jalapeno.

Super good with alot of filling. Try it!

Cajun somewhere in San Jose, San Francisco, or on the Peninsula?

No on NOLA - it's way too loud. Head over to CreoLa in San Carlos - the menu & place is small - so you know the menu will be good! If you've never had Crawfish Etoufee - you've gotta try it.

Overrated disappointments

Impala at 501 Broadway, San Francisco, CA 94133

A-B-S-O-L-U-T-E-L-Y AAAWWWFFFUUULLL! We were suckered in by OpenTable and it offer of 1000 dining points and by this:
"Impala writes...From the founders of Mas Sake and Suite One8One comes a new luxe Mexican restaurant and lounge." Needless to say, we won't be trying those places either. Again, disappointed due to the slick website and slick menu describing good food.

When the waitress, with a thick russian accent, comes to our table to take our drink order, we ask the waitress is are there any happy hour specials, as we are dining early, before 6pm. She replies that she has to check - as this is her first day. Yikes! We were concerned. Plus the menu is "Mexican" - ha!ha!

I tried the Sloppy Jose - yuck and my dining companion had the organic enchiladas - it was so bad that she did not take a second bite, instead she ate the side dishes. When I invited her to send the plate back - she was very uncomfortable doing this. The dining room was practically empty and she did not want to risk getting something "extra" in her next plate.

Just thinking about this place makes the bile rise in my throat. Yuck!

Update! Jeanne d'Arc - 715 Bush Street, SF 415.421.3154

Update Wed 30Aug06! We enjoyed a bargain of a prix fix meal, 4 courses, including dessert souffle, all for $29.95. The menu varies, so if you don't like surprises, then call ahead.

The cozy restaurant is located in the basement of the Hotel Cornell de France. You will enjoy the wonderful surroundings of this boutique hotel on your way to the restaurant. Wed night is not a busy night, luckily for us, we had superb service and privacy in the dining room scattered with other patrons. Beautiful huge fragrant fresh flowers were on each table and the lighting is beautiful and flattering.

We started with a cream of asparagus soup. The bowl arrived piping hot and subtly flavored with hints of black pepper, butter and nutmeg. It was rich and delicious - we used the bread to sop up the last bits clinging to the edge of the bowl.

The second course is your choice between two salads: the warm spinach salad with beets and heirlooms topped with a vinaigrette reduction; and the other was a mixed spring greens salad topped with a delicious and delicate mushroom puff pastry. We split both, but did not we anticipated dessert.

Main course, again changes daily, offered a selection from salmon, chicken, rabbit, shrimp, lamb shank, filet, rack of lamb and veal. We shared the rabbit and the lamb shank. Both huge portions and delicious - the vegetables were pretty well roasted, and a little too mushy for my taste. Overall, it was incredibly filling and my dining companion cleared her plate!

The best part was the Grand Marnier souffles, served in individual ramekins and a side of Grand Marnier creme anglaise spiked with finely orange peel. So delicious! The waiter poked a hole at the top of the souffle and poured in the warm sauce. The souffle slowly deflated. The top of the souffle was tender and sweet, crusted lightly with sugar. Each biteful was delicious and inviting. I was sorry to see it end as I cleaned out the ramekin.

For this price, it really is a bargain!

No they don't - they sell the packaged tea, but do not sell the active live culture. Thanks for trying.

Kombucha Cultures - where to buy?

Does anyone know where to buy the Kombucha culture used to make homemade tea? All I found were websites but not an actual place that I can look at the Kombucha culture before I buy it. Thanks!
