New Japanese Restaurant in Calgary - Ki
Visted Ki in Calgary on Thursday night - first night open to invited guests. Its on 4th beside the Keg/Westin. Beautiful location and great food. Would highly recommend. Best dishes...Toro Tower (keep in mind its a very small tower - well not a tower exactly), Beef Maki (awesome) and the Duck Confit salad (incredible). Would pass on Shrimp and Scallops with mango sauce (nothing special). Its a large location so I hope they do well.
Over Easy Breakfast - Calgary
Went there with 4 adults and 1 child around 2 pm on a Saturday - was still busy, but they had some empty tables. The decor is great - clean and cheerful. I would agree with the other posters about the stools down the middle. They look great - and the communal table is a good idea...but I would not be keen on using them. The food was great...and a good price. Would recommend!!!
Stollen time - Western Canada's Best?
Last year Rise Bakery was selling Stollen - and it was wonderful! Just how you described with the almond paste and currants. I asked them yesterday when they would start selling it again and they said around December 7th (but I think only at their Bow Valley location - only open Mon-Fri during the day).
The elusive search for a great sandwich and soup restaurant (Calgary)
I'd second Keith's....Turkey with Cranberry on Brown...delish!
Kid-friendly in Calgary NW?
Not sure what you saw AriaDream at Redwater - but they don't have highchairs or booster seats...maybe the family brought a booster seat themselves?
They have some pizzas and pastas that may be okay for some kids, but its not really a kid place. We took our 8 year old nephew and he's used to eating out, so liked one of their pizza's, but that was even a bit of a stretch with the spinach on it ("yuck - green stuff"). It would be a big risk to bring our 3 year old.... :( And certainly no coloring paper etc... On their opentable reservation confirmation it says something like "although kids are welcome we do not have kids menus, boosters or highchairs".
I'd suggest sticking to the big chains or a smaller pizza place perhaps?
Any news on Sandros?
Was there the other day for lunch...food is still outstanding. Nothing fancy, just good Italian food...however the service was horrible...1.5 hrs for two people who just had entrees. I know they just re-opened so will give them the benefit of the doubt. Calamari and Penne Arribiata always a safe (and good) choice.
TGIF...and I don't want to cook
I agree about the veggie lasag. Canned corn? please.
The mac & cheese looked pretty traditional - but I'm sure you'll find something!
Las Vegas restaurant for a group of 10?
First my apologies as I know this has most likely been on the board more than once. However I'm taking my husband to Vegas for his 40th in February, along with 4 other couples and we need a restaurant for his birthday dinner. Price is not a concern, but we're looking for good food and great fun atmosphere. Have batted around the idea of Craftsteak? The age group is 35 - 42, likely staying away from french food or really high end fine dining. Group is well travelled for the most part. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!
TGIF...and I don't want to cook
I've never had the veggie lasagna at Main Dish, so thanks for the heads up - but did look at the mac and cheese the other day and wondered about that...
YYC breakfast spots
We LOVE Dairylane...fantastic breakfast and lunch, but as someone mentioned a couple of times, its very small so go early or be prepared to wait with a coffee outside. But I just heard of a new place opening near Deluxe Diner on Edmonton Trail...I think its called Over Easy? Won't open until the end of October...
TGIF...and I don't want to cook
or maybe try swinging by Main Dish on your way home...you could pick up some lasagna or they have individual turkey meatloafs that are great and both would be good with the Merlot! (its in Bridgeland).
Teatro Calgary - Experience with Private Functions?
I think you'll be pleased with your choice - I've attended two larger private functions there and they were both spectacular!
Breakfast in Yorkville area Dec 27?
Hi fellow chowhounds ... I'm coming into Toronto for a couple of days at Christmas and I'm looking for place to meet friends for breakfast on Saturday Dec 27...seems that many places are closed that day...we're staying at the Four Seasons....any suggestions?
Thanks!
Parker House?
Anyone heard anything about Parker House? I just passed it on 6th the other day - doesn't look close to opening, but a friend mentioned they are hiring, so must be opening soon.
Calgary High-End Prices
Also let's not forget that downtown real estate is second only to NYC in terms of cost for leasing in north america (TO is second)...that combined with the cost of labour in this city needs to be passed on to consumers in order for the restaurants to stay in business. This of course does not excuse bad food, or poor service - but is an explaination for the high prices on menus. (FYI - the suburban area is ranked 6th most expensive in Canada)
Victoria 50th birthday dinner
Gosh last time I was at ll Terrazzo it was wonderful - now I was only there with my husband, so perhaps that made a difference to the service. I will say that it wasn't very attentive, but rather satisfactory, however the food was incredible.
Taste of Calgary 2008
I agree that it's a little pricey - but we've gone the last couple of years and enjoyed the experience overall. Just avoid the peak times as the line ups can be awful.
belgo calgary
We went to Belgo with a group of 6 and varied expectations - run by the penny lane group so expected boobs and short skirts (and it met that expectation) - but with a great chef (and thus expected great food). The food was fabulous - but the place did not warrant the expensive menu. The atmosphere is too 'bar' like to want to order a $100 bottle of wine. Especially went it's served by a 22 year old with a slit in her skirt up to her XXXX. And we had to shout over each other to be heard. The chef (Shaun Desaulniers) is really doing himself a disservice - his food would be much much better in a higher end restaurant with good servers and nice surroundings.
Restaurant Recommendations for Visitor to Seattle?
My husband and I are visiting Seattle the end of December....and have booked reservations at two restaurants - Restaurant Zoe and Purple Cafe and Wine Bar (both looked interesting on Opentable). Any feedback on either? Or is there somewhere else we must go? Staying at Warwick on Lenore St. Thanks!
Wines Stores in Calgary
Has anyone popped into the 4th Street Liquor Store? (Right across from Lululemon) Their wine selection isn't huge - but it's good! You can go down the street to Bin 905 and get recommendations - and then wander to the 4th Street store and get the same bottle for $5 - $8 cheaper. Or chat with one of the men at the store - they've got some good recommendations.
