Afternoon Tea and Dinner Restaurant for Girly Girl Weekend?
close to the huntington (and much better), but a bit more than your budget at $39/pp, the afternoon tea at the langham hotel is lovely - and would be a beautiful place for a send-off.

help me pick a "mad man" era dessert for christmas
can you help me choose a dessert for a "mad men" era christmas dinner? we will be having standard american fare (ham, potatoes, peas, etc.) using vintage recipes straight from the 1960s cookbooks.
Girly alternative to tea house? Costa Mesa or near
I was just there and the tea was over-steeped and the food quality was fairly abysmal, so you are not missing much. Here are some tea rooms in Orange County: http://www.letseatoc.com/tea.htm . Maybe one of these will work? Have fun!
classic parker house rolls?
thanks! my sister, who lives in orange county, is going to pick some up from french's. http://www.frenchspastry.com/home.html
classic parker house rolls?
do you know where i can find classic parker house rolls (ideally in the south bay or west la)? i used to buy them at el segundo bakery in el segundo, but they have since closed. i saw a previous post from 2003 indicating that perhaps gelson's may carry them? thanks!
where can i find cream puffs in orange county?
i need to buy some cream puffs tomorrow morning for a special occasion. normally, i get them from pâtisserie chantilly (the bday girl's favorite), but they are closed today (tuesday) and i need to be in the oc early. i was thinking maybe 85°c bakery might have some?
any other ideas?
(i'm coming from the south bay, so if there's any place around here that opens before 9:00, please suggest away!)
thanks.
high-altitude baking cookbooks?
any recommendations for high-altitude baking cookbooks? i've found a couple online, but i'd like a personal recommendation before buying for a friend.
thanks.
Why are my chocolate chip cookies so flat?
you could try cooler butter. when you can make a slight indentation in it with your finger, it's just right.
Private Room in South Bay/Long Beach?
you might try checking out the new terranea resort in palos verdes. i think it would be a very pretty place to celebrate the little one.

Would you please comment on this vegetarian Christmas menu?
i would suggest adding in some greens; it's seems a little starch-heavy for my taste (been a vegetarian/vegan for almost 20 years). perhaps subbing out the potato dishes for something with kale or another seasonal green? something with a little acid? also, a lovely winter salad would be high on my list. lately, i've really been into this one served at mozza (it can be easily made vegetarian-friendly): http://tinyurl.com/ydt3hjw. unsolicited tip? i usually just find recipes/menus that work together and make them meatless. i am sure your guests will really love a meal where they can eat *everything!*
Great Restaurant for dinner in Manhattan Beach or Palos Verdes?
the service and quality at petros has really gone downhill of late. i would hop across the metlox plaza to sashi for japanese, where the food is good (for the south bay) and they actually appreciate their guests. http://www.sashimb.com/
japanese or steak for lunch in/very near seal beach?
any suggestions for a nice birthday lunch in or very near to seal beach? the birthday gal has specifically requested japanese or steak. (i do have koi sushi already on my list of options.)
thanks!

vanilla ice cream - no cook/no eggs in ice cream maker?
thanks, but i'm looking for a basic vanilla ice cream, not a fruit-flavored ice cream. will keep those in mind for next time though!
vanilla ice cream - no cook/no eggs in ice cream maker?
anyone have a no cook/no eggs vanilla ice cream recipe for the ice cream maker? i am doing a quick cooking lesson with kids and don't have time to cook and cool the custard before adding to the ice cream maker. and since we're dealing with the young 'uns, i don't want use raw eggs.
(please note: i'm only looking for recipes or links to recipes, not advice on using raw eggs, why i should be doing this another way, why ice cream will taste bad if i don't use eggs, etc. thanks.)
Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives
chris cognac, who is on the police force in los angeles, used to have a show called "the hungry detective" on the food network. if memory serves, he did feature some dives. you can find some of his recommendations here, though your eyes may start bleeding from looking at his site's background pattern: http://www.culinarydetective.com/mydiningfaves.htm

mama d's is definitely not the lingering type of spot. service is never rushed, but the atmosphere is frenetic.

what are your go-to desserts for a crowd of around 30 guests? i want to avoid the ubiquitous cupcake if possible.
