Restos Near Canon Theatre
First of all, apologies if this has been asked before, but I need some recommendations for restaurants near The Canon.
My sister has rheumatoid arthritis, which sometimes means mobility difficulties. So, we want something decent, very close and which won't cause problems for my sis who has been looking forward to Spamalot all summer (me too!)
We've been to The Superior before and it might be fun to try somewhere else.
Is The Senator beyond busy at noon on a Sun. We're going to a matinee performance.
What about Baton Rouge?
I seem to remember Eggspectations being mentioned in a brunch thread but don't remember whether opinion was positive or not.
Many thanks!
Source for unroasted/green coffee beans downtown?
Wow, that was fast! Thank you both. I see a little outing to the Annex in my near future. :)
Source for unroasted/green coffee beans downtown?
I just read an interesting article about using a popcorn popper to roast your own coffee beans and was wondering if any of you know where I can buy green coffee beans in the downtown core.
Apparently green coffee beans are cheaper and can be stored for up to two years if done so properly. And there's the added bonus of the smell of freshly roasted coffee wafting through the house!
Thanks.
French restaurant recommendation needed
How about Bodega? I haven't been for a few years but I still remember the gorgeous duck breast with pomegranate sauce and the rabbit stew with a deep, dark red wine sauce and peppercorns. There were also some great wild boar sausages to start.
It's in a converted mansion which adds to the atmosphere too.

Need to find " Ontario" specific recipes
There's the "Flavours of" or the Food Lover's Guide to Canada.
Blueberries? The best blueberries I've ever had are from Blueberry Point, Georgian Bay. Though I suppose blueberries are found in other provinces too.
Peameal bacon is definitely an Ontario specific specialty.
Butter tarts seem to be more French-Candaian and therefore found in several provinces. Leastways, every French-Canadian family I know has a buttertart recipe whether they're from Manitoba, Ontario or Quebec!
Maybe Foodland Ontario might be of some help?

They have gorgeous satin-covered boxes or chocolate boxes.
where to get Lyle's products (tricle and corn syrup)
You can get treacle at Dinah's cupboard. I've seen the golden syrup at Pusateri's on Church but don't remember if they have treacle as well.
Silvo Gehakt spice, dutch spice for ground beef - know where to get it?
Reither's on Church St. might have the spices. There are a lot of Dutch and German imported foodstuffs there.
Where to Get Decent Fruitcake?
I make my own fruitcake every year using the Delia Smith recipe for one cake. It has a lot of currants and raisins compared to the amount of glace fruit and cherries
I usually buy my ingredients at the St. Lawrence Market.
I can well understand that good fruitcakes are very expensive because I once broke down the ingredients for my cake and including the brandy and marizipan I figured the coast of one 8" round fruitcake to be $30 dollars. And that didn't include my oh-so-valuable labour!
Good Service Stories?
I haven't been to Scaramouche in years but I vividly remember the attentive service and great food.
I also love Cafe California on Church St. The service is fast, friendly and attentive. I have never gone there alone but when I go there have always been single diners and from what I observed they were treated just as well as the larger tables.
Best eggs? (farm fresh, organic preffered) Egg connaisseurs please!
I don't know about them being organic but I can attest to the Thur/Fri eggs being fresh.
We consider it a huge treat to go down to the market early on a Sat morning and buy a dozen eggs to poach when we get home. There is very little of the scummy, stringy bits in the pot which shows you that there was no runny, aged whites.
But the yolks are not the beautiful almost orange that you can get in Europe and the UK.
Where can I buy "heavy cream"?
Real clotted cream is "cooked" but not pasteurized. Fresh milk is left at room temperature for 12 hours or so and then gently, very gently heated, reducing the water content.
The Devon cream sold in stores in Canada is not clotted. It's double cream. BIG difference.
