Top Chef NOLA - Ep. #13 - 01/08/14 (Spoilers)

Top Chef needs to stop giving immunity for Quickfire wins this late in the game, and Top Chef needs to stop doing team Elimination challenges ths late in the game.

I don't blame Nicholas for still being in the competition. I blame Top Chef.

Padma and Questlove making racial jokes

Not the kind of society I want to live in. But maybe Padma should plead guilty.

Grant Achatz Names MSG as a Top-3 Kitchen Staple

"You can find it online, or look for it in Asian markets."

LOL

Or you can go to any grocery store and buy some Accent.

Taco Bell vs Del Taco

Tacos al carbon(especially the carnitas version which is seasonal, unfortunately) from Del Taco may be my favorite item from any fast food joint. DT's asada tacos are decent, as well. I agree that much of Del Taco's menu is bland though.

The only time I go to Taco Bell is when I get a hankering for a chili cheese burrito.

Albuquerque New Mex Mex + Rail Yards Dive

Yeah, lots of places close fairly early. El Patio stays open until 9PM, I think. That would probably be my suggestion.

Chipotle New Tofu Sofritas Burrito. .

I've only had a sample and thought it was actually pretty decent. My comment to the server was that the texture reminded me of sausage. I usually get a carnitas or barbacoa bowl, but I might give a tofu bowl a try sometime.

Speechless.......Yes even I can be speechless........Anti-Gay patrons at Carraba's

IIRC, they had placed their order then got a phone call that caused them to get it to go. I guess they didn't feel obligated to tip on take out. Seems like some kind of tip would have still been appropriate even if it were a reduced tip.

Speechless.......Yes even I can be speechless........Anti-Gay patrons at Carraba's

A waitress a few weeks ago claimed she wasn't tipped by someone who wrote the "n word" on the check and has received over $10,000 from sympathetic people.

The gay guy's timing is suspicious but that's counterbalanced by the restaurant's proximity to those Westboro scumbags(about an hour away). Writing something like that on the check seems just like something they would do.

R.I.P. Mary of Mary & Tito's

Probably not news to the locals, but I was reading Gil Garduno's blog and saw that she had passed away last month. Truly one of the greats.

Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives reviews?

My wife orders puntas de filetes every time we go to Red Iguana. I vary with my order but it's almost always mole.

Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives reviews?

I've been to several DDD places, most of them before they were on DDD.

My nominees for a top 10 or 20 list:

Red Iguana in SLC(been eating mole there for probably 20 years, one of my favorite Mexican restaurants anywhere)
Louis Mueller's in Taylor, TX (maybe not the very best BBQ joint in Texas but one of the best)
Cecilia's in Albuquerque(can be hit and miss but makes my list solely on the quality of the red chile)

This makes me sad (and angry) on so many levels

Not saying that the Wild Wings representatives are doing it because they just want to put the incident behind them, but I could understand a restaurant wanting to do that regardless of what actually happened. It may have happened exactly as was claimed by the offended party but it's no stretch to think it possible that people(whatever color) waiting for two hours would get upset about it and make their displeasure known.

Never been to a Wild Wings but a Texas Roadhouse I used to frequent had an entire room just for people waiting. Here the chains get slammed at peak times and waits can be ridiculously long.

Honky sounds dated to me, but whitey seems in vogue. I'm thinking of "Beat Whitey Night" at the Iowa State Fair a couple of years ago, the New Black Panther guy with "Kill Whitey" tattooed on his face who was arrested a couple of months ago, and the "Kill Whitey" rap song from several years ago.

I'm not from the deep South, but over the course of my lifetime I've heard just about every racial slur that exists spoken by people of white, black, and hispanic ethnicity. I've heard whitey. No one has ever actually called me by a racial slur to my face though.

The journalist writes "a woman who works at the Wild Wings restaurant" rather than "a woman who says she works at the Wild Wing restaurant", so it sounds like her identity was confirmed.

Getting braces tomorrow trying to plan ahead of time. What foods can I have and not have?

Get a Waterpik, for sure. It was a big help when I had braces.

Texas Monthly's Top 50 Texas BBQ Joints

I ate at Tyler's Barbeque in Amarillo when I was passing through a couple of weeks ago. Had brisket(a tiny bit too lean and dry for my tastes but still very good), ribs(meaty and nicely done), and peppercorn sausage(good flavor). Tyler's made the top 50 list and rightly so. Good enough that I tried to eat there again on my way back through Amarillo, but they're closed on Mondays(& Sundays), so I got a pretty decent CFS at Calico County Restaurant which is nearby.

Pancheros Mexican Grill

I've been to a Pancheros maybe three times. There used to be one here for a while, but it went out of business. I can't remember exactly what I had from there, but I do remember that it was incredibly bland. Not as good as Chipotle or even Qdoba.

Hot Tomato in Fruita, CO is worth a visit!

Yep, Hot Tomato's pizza is very good. I get it regularly and am never disappointed. The only pizza in the Grand Valley I like better is Enzo's but not by much(though I don't order pizza from Enzo's often because the other menu choices are so good and Hot Tomato is more convenient for me for take out.)

Down to three BBQ sauces. Help me pick

Have you tried Head Country? That's my favorite of the sauces I've been able to find in a supermarket. I've bought it at City Market which is a regional Kroger chain. And recently, I was surprised to see it at Walmart.

Most overrated 'luxury food?

Born in Texas but have never lived there long enough to consider myself a Texan. My problem with chicken fried steak is that it's so much harder to get a proper chicken fried steak in a restaurant than a ribeye. Prefer both of them over filet. Two revolvers in the nightstand for the New York reload which I don't think makes me a New Yorker even one little bit. Ha!

Why You Should Definitely Cook Bacon in the Oven

I don't cook bacon all that often, but when I do, it's in the oven. The grease gets drained off and used in a pot of pinto beans. The oven is my preferred method for cooking beans, too.

Rant: Sick of "Artisanal" and "Curated" food and Wine - Food pretensions that make you gag? Post em here!

Isn't that just a Britishism that's crept into the language here? I think the first time I heard it was from Sybil on Fawlty Towers. They tend to say things in that manner, such as going to hospital instead of going to the hospital. I haven't noticed going to hospital showing up in American usage yet, but the one that bugs me that I've been hearing on American television shows lately is "Do you want to come with?" instead of "Do you want to come with me(or us)?"
