Chowhound Beta Site Part V

"I can now see five posts I've participated on as to the three I saw a few weeks ago, but it's still not like viewing in the current version, where I can see 12 after scrolling past the (much much smaller) headers."

More than any other issue, the poor manner in which the beta conveys information is what kills my interest in using the new Chowhound. 12 is just much better than 3 or 5.

I also hope they find a better way of handling locations. The way it is now in the beta is going to be a real mess.

Beta-testing a new post in Site Feedback using tags

I'll be astonished if they can make this design work. It seems to me they made some fundamental choices (choices that are wrong for a website like Chowhound) early in the process without considering the ramifications, and now they're hamstrung by those choices. Honestly, it would probably be better for them to wipe the slate clean and start over, but there's likely no money or time to do that. Can't really just say to their bosses "Nevermind the work we've put in on the new design. We'll just see if we can fix up the old one and stick with that" either.

Good luck to them. They have a tough job ahead.

I overheated my wok...Did I ruin it?

Is it even possible to overheat a wok? I dunno, maybe if it got so hot that it melted?

Chowhound Beta Site Part IV

Tweaking won't save this design. It needs drastic re-thinking.

One question about the new site

I agree with you. It's hard for me to even imagine what discussions among the design team might have led to this design.

I haven't given much thought to the tags other than to notice they are too big.

I hope someone has deeply considered the effect tags might have on the ethos of the community. At first glance, it seems they could have a large effect but whether for good or ill is beyond my powers of prediction.

The 2008 redesign had the white space problem. I see excessive white space in this redesign as more of a separate issue from the poor information density In this redesign though.

Just to clarify, reducing white space would be easier on the eyes, but poor information density is still the major problem of the new redesign, IMO.

Is there some reason you can't just leave both the new and old designs up and running?

Make the new design the default since TPTB seem to love it and apparently believe it will increase profit somehow. Give the content creators and power users the ability to opt into the old design which is much more efficient and much less unwieldy for our purposes. Everybody's happy, nobody leaves.

Chowhound Beta Site Open to Everyone (Continued Again)

They listen, but they do not comprehend the magnitude of the problems. Not yet, anyway.

Chowhound Beta Site Open to Everyone (Continued Again)

There needs to be a drop down list of all boards (so that they can be easily accessed when not logged in and easily accessed by non-members.) The followed boards drop down is good, too, but I think the site needs both.

Chowhound Beta Site Open to Everyone (Continued Again)

Loss of information density was one of the biggest(possibly THE biggest) concerns during the 2006 redesign. We were pretty adamant that we wanted very many topics per page. The design team really responded to our wishes.

This new design is a very poor browsing experience. If I were a newcomer to the site, I wouldn't stay long. I won't be staying long anyway.

Chowhound Beta Site Open to Everyone (Continued)

I've been on the site for around 15 years. I've seen a lot of changes over the years, both good and bad. IMO, the new design is horrendous. This is almost certainly going to be the one that causes me to stop reading Chowhound. I'll check the site from time to time to see if it gets changed from what the beta portends, but it's farewell to Chowhound other than that.

Ate beef jerky that had been opened 2 weeks. Am I likely to get sick?

Well, I haven't gotten sick, but it looks like mold can be a concern with Jack Link's jerky.

Ate beef jerky that had been opened 2 weeks. Am I likely to get sick?

It looks like not refrigerating it can be problematic with this brand of jerky.

Yeah, commercial stuff, Jack Link's specifically. Didn't notice anything growing on it, and it tasted as it always does. I poked around on the Jack Link's website for a bit, and it seems that mold is the reason for the 3 day warning. Didn't see any mold, and I'm hoping that 3 day warning is them being legally cautious more than anything else.

After eating it, I was appalled to read on the package that it should have been eaten or refrigerated within 3 days. How worried should I be?

I don't blame Nicholas for still being in the competition. I blame Top Chef.

Grant Achatz Names MSG as a Top-3 Kitchen Staple

"You can find it online, or look for it in Asian markets."

LOL

Or you can go to any grocery store and buy some Accent.

Taco Bell vs Del Taco

Tacos al carbon(especially the carnitas version which is seasonal, unfortunately) from Del Taco may be my favorite item from any fast food joint. DT's asada tacos are decent, as well. I agree that much of Del Taco's menu is bland though.

The only time I go to Taco Bell is when I get a hankering for a chili cheese burrito.

Albuquerque New Mex Mex + Rail Yards Dive

Yeah, lots of places close fairly early. El Patio stays open until 9PM, I think. That would probably be my suggestion.

Chipotle New Tofu Sofritas Burrito. .

I've only had a sample and thought it was actually pretty decent. My comment to the server was that the texture reminded me of sausage. I usually get a carnitas or barbacoa bowl, but I might give a tofu bowl a try sometime.

Speechless.......Yes even I can be speechless........Anti-Gay patrons at Carraba's

IIRC, they had placed their order then got a phone call that caused them to get it to go. I guess they didn't feel obligated to tip on take out. Seems like some kind of tip would have still been appropriate even if it were a reduced tip.

Speechless.......Yes even I can be speechless........Anti-Gay patrons at Carraba's

A waitress a few weeks ago claimed she wasn't tipped by someone who wrote the "n word" on the check and has received over $10,000 from sympathetic people.

The gay guy's timing is suspicious but that's counterbalanced by the restaurant's proximity to those Westboro scumbags(about an hour away). Writing something like that on the check seems just like something they would do.

Probably not news to the locals, but I was reading Gil Garduno's blog and saw that she had passed away last month. Truly one of the greats.

Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives reviews?

My wife orders puntas de filetes every time we go to Red Iguana. I vary with my order but it's almost always mole.

Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives reviews?

I've been to several DDD places, most of them before they were on DDD.

My nominees for a top 10 or 20 list:

Red Iguana in SLC(been eating mole there for probably 20 years, one of my favorite Mexican restaurants anywhere)
Louis Mueller's in Taylor, TX (maybe not the very best BBQ joint in Texas but one of the best)
Cecilia's in Albuquerque(can be hit and miss but makes my list solely on the quality of the red chile)
