Chimayo Joe's Profile

Does anyone actually like Sandra Lee?

She doesn't irk me the way she seems to do to a lot of people, but I had to laugh when this character showed up in The Witcher(computer game). I couldn't figure out why the Midday Bride seemed familiar then it dawned on me. LOL

Most Americans would squirm

I'd rather have the bugs than this:

Paonia area- Delta County?

I've only been there once, but Zack's Bar-B-Q in Hotchkiss was pretty decent. The ribs didn't have enough smoke to suit me, but the brisket, pinto beans, and fries were good. I've heard their ham is also good.

Dr. Pepper Ten

I wasn't aware of that marketing campaign when I bought a 12-pack of Dr Pepper Ten. The checkout clerk made some comment about men not wanting to buy diet soda which struck me as a little odd, but it makes sense now.

Dr. Pepper Ten

Anyone tried this? I think it's pretty good for a diet soft drink. I can cope with ten calories per can.

Colorado Springs recommendations

I've only been once, but I liked The Curry Leaf. It's a hole in the wall, but I thought the food was pretty good there. And how often do you get a chance to try Sri Lankan food? http://www.curryleafrestaurant.com/

I enjoyed the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo. It's not huge, but the setting is nice.

Indian Grocery in Denver

Oops, my memory playing is tricks on me. The Indian grocery I've actually been inside is the one next to the Star of India restaurant. It's still in that same general area of Parker Road. I'm not sure I even knew the name of it at the time(almost 10 years ago) but it's apparently named Star Bazaar. Maybe I had some vague partial recollection of the name and that was what threw me.

I've been to Masalaa though that's been quite some time ago, too. I really enjoyed the food and need to get back there again some time when I'm visiting Denver.

Indian Grocery in Denver

There's one in the same shopping center as Masalaa. I think it's called Bombay Bazaar. I've only been there once(many years ago), and it's the only Indian grocery I've been to in Denver, so I don't know how it compares with any others.

looking for an outstanding NM meal for a one night stay in ALB- is it possible to have it in Old Town? and also a great breakfast!

You could go to Padilla's. I think they're open at least until 8:00 PM, maybe even a little later. You probably should call to check on their hours if you decide to go there or maybe someone here on Chowhound can provide better info on their hours.

I don't think I'd give Padilla's top marks on any particular item they do, but Padilla's is pretty solid overall.

Albuquerque: Does anyone watch IN PLAIN SIGHT?

I was wondering the same thing. The adobe walls had designs carved into them, and the view in the background looked like low hills with no visible houses or businesses. Didn't ring a bell for me.

Chipotle....What's Good Here?

My usual order from Chipotle is a carnitas bowl with black beans or pintos, pico de gallo, green salsa, and cheese. Their guacamole is pretty decent for a fast food joint, too. If I don't get a carnitas bowl, I get a barbacoa bowl.

Best Colorado-made products?

I really like Enstrom's toffee.

Such a Thing as Good New Mexican Food in ABQ?

Red chile is pungent and can be a bit of an acquired taste for some people. My wife didn't much like red chile when she first had it over 25 years ago. She preferred green until fairly recently but now likes red better. I'm not a big fan of green, but I could drink red by the glassful. The only thing that really puts me off red is when it hasn't cooked enough and still has a raw taste to it.

A couple more places: You might want to try Cecilia's Cafe(her red uses Chimayo chiles which have a little different flavor than what you typically get in red chile in Albuquerque). Cecilia's can be inconsistent and sometimes stingy on portion size & the amount of red chile you get, but the red chile is always excellent there. The other place I recommend is Perea's Tijuana Bar and Restaurant in Corrales. Simple food done well.

Quick lunch report: SLC's Ganesh

I've been to that buffet and really enjoyed it. It was last summer, and I can't remember the details, but Ganesh went on the list of Indian restaurants in SLC that I'd visit again. I think that's why Sitara in Ogden was something of a letdown for me. Sitara advertises as featuring North and South Indian food (as does Ganesh), so I was hoping their buffet would be comparable to Ganesh's.

The other Indian buffet I went to during my SLC trip last summer was Star of India. When I was there it was good, but I've read quite a few negative comments about that one--perhaps consistency problems. The food there had a bit more heat than I usually find at Indian buffets.

Susan Feniger on Real Housewives of OC

The husband didn't like flan and wanted to know if Feniger would do fried oreos. LOL

She said "no" and was even polite about it.

Brief comments on first time visits to a few SLC and Ogden places.

One other thing I probably should have mentioned about K Rico Peru is that their hours may be somewhat indefinite. My info from the web was that they opened at 11. I noticed on the door that it said they opened at, I think it was 10 but might have even been 9. Anyway, I got there at around 11:30 and was told they wouldn't be open for another 20 minutes or so. Killed some time at Best Buy across the street and came back around noon, and by that time they were doing good business. Don't know if that's typical, but it might matter if someone were pressed for time.

Yeah, Smashburger(specifically their bacon cheeseburger) is always in the back of my mind now when I'm evaluating chain burgers. It has become my benchmark and is definitely worth the extra $ over any other fast food burger I've had.

Brief comments on first time visits to a few SLC and Ogden places.

Adobos --Puerto Rican/Cuban restaurant in Sandy. Though the flavors weren't as bold as I had hoped for, I thought the food was still very good. Started with yuca alcapurrias(ground yuca stuffed with Cuban picadillo and fried.) I liked it well enough that I'd order it again but probably only after I'd tried the other appetizer offerings. My main course was carne frita which I enjoyed even though some of the leaner chunks of pork were a bit dry. I'm not too well-versed in this cuisine, but the tostones were tougher than I would have preferred, maybe mashed a little too flat(they did taste good though.) I'd probably opt for maduros instead of tostones next time. The black beans were the best I've ever had. My wife had mofongo with chicharrones and chicken and thought it was great. It wasn't as garlicy as I expected it to be, but I only had a sampling of it. I'd read comments about slow service, but everything was smooth and timely for us. I'd definitely return to Adobos. http://www.adobosgrill.com/-/Home.html

Sitara --Indian restaurant in Ogden. Had the Sunday lunch buffet which was disappointing--small selection and dull spicing. Luckily, Indian food falls into the same category as BBQ for me; even when it's mediocre it's still not too bad. Sitara wouldn't rate a return visit from me. http://www.sitaraindia.com/

In-n-Out Burger --Second time I've been to an In-n-Out, actually. I only went this time to see if I was wrong about last time. I think it's over-hyped but decent. It's certainly a step up from places like McDonald's and Burger King. Maybe the best at its pricepoint, but that's about as much praise as I can offer. http://www.in-n-out.com/default.asp

K Rico Peru --Peruvian restaurant in SLC. First time at K Rico and first time eating Peruvian food. Mixed bag for me. The rotisserie chicken was excellent. The fried potatoes that came with the chicken were plentiful but plain and similar to the way my very non-Peruvian mother often cooked potatoes. I liked them. I loved the beef and cilantro sauce of the Seco de Carne con Arroz y Frijoles but did not like the beans at all. Pretty sure the beans were cooked with some Peruvian cheese that just didn't match up with my palate at all. I'd probably give K Rico another try but only after doing some reading about the cuisine to try to pin down what I'd need to order to avoid getting something I would not like. http://kricoperu.com/default.aspx

OK I'll bite - what do the Twitter counts on threads mean?

That thing has been bugging me since the moment I first saw it. Thanks for telling me how to get rid of it. It's gone.

BBQ Styles and Trends-Favorites and Dislikes

I like my brisket to be central Texas style and my pork ribs to be KC style. Prefer pulled pork not to be too vinegary. NC style minced, doused in vinegar pork doesn't appeal to me at all. For sides, I don't really care (in the sense that something being a side traditionally served with BBQ isn't going to make me like it any better or worse if I'm eating it with BBQ.)

What food do you love on its own but detest when mixed with something else?

I love garlic and love mashed potatoes, but I don't like garlic mashed potatoes.

Wienerschnitzel "5 for 5" Anniversary Deal

I didn't grow up with them, but a chili cheese dog with onions from Wienerschnitzel suits me just fine occasionally. Their fries could be improved though.

Wolf Brand Chili Clone

Have you tried any of the refrigerated chili that comes in bricks or plastic tubs? I think some of those taste closer to Wolf than other brands of canned chili. It's been too long since I've had a big, thick, steaming bowl of Wolf Brand Chili for me to say for certain though.

Recs for Ogden Utah

I've only been once and know next to nothing about Japanese food, but I enjoyed the meal I had from Windy's Sukiyaki. http://www.windyssukiyaki.com/index.html

Top Chef All-Stars - Ep. #13 (Finale Pt. 1) - 03/09/11 (Spoilers)

I don't remember Richard being such a nervous Nellie during his season. Was he?

Top Chef All-Stars - Ep. #10 - 02/16/11 (Spoilers)

It looked like Tiffany used Tony Chachere's Creole Seasoning. That stuff requires a really light hand.

I couldn't tell for sure what Angelo added to his soup but it sounded like Mike said it was too thick and looked like Angelo might have added boxed stock to thin it. Could have exacerbated the saltiness problem. Someone in the thread mentioned bottled water, but I couldn't really tell what he added.

What Is the National Dish of New Mexico?

Despite my moniker, I'm not from NM either. Talking about iconic, I'd say stacked blue corn enchiladas. If I were just voting on what I like to eat most, I'd probably say carne adovada, and I'm sure my wife's vote would go to chile rellenos.

Top Chef All-Stars - Ep. #2 - 12/08/10 (Spoilers)

Maybe Marcel took it as an attempt to undermine his confidence rather than an attempt to ruin the dish.

FWIW, I don't believe Angelo is out to sabotage anyone this season or that he was out to do that in Season 7 to anyone. I think it's just Angelo being Angelo and wanting things the way he wants them and not being shy about pushing in that direction.

Top Chef All-Stars - Ep. #2 - 12/08/10 (Spoilers)

Or maybe Marcel just watched Angelo's season of TC. Whether Angelo was sabotaging people under the guise of helping them was constantly being brought up during his season.
