Sandwich Contest

#1. Mendocino Farms - Pretty much anything, but the soyrizo and prosciutto are my faves. They make sandwiches seasonally and the menu changes.

#2. Bauru at Bossa Nova

#3. Prosciutto di parma with mozzarella and roasted peppers at Joan's on Third

Square One

Just tried Square One this weekend, I had heard a lot of great things about their food and the chef so I wanted to try them out. The food was delicious and service was pretty good. But what grinds my gears is the hostess.

The girl that was the hostess was incompetent. In a restaurant with 30 small tables max, maybe less, and about 4-5 parties waiting outside to be seated she couldn't keep it straight. We put our names down with her on her clipboard, and then watched as parties that arrived after us were seated before we were. When the 4th party after us was being called we reminded her that we were there before the other people and she said she called our name several times and we didn't answer. Which is untrue and a total lie. We were standing outside the whole time and watched her every time she came out to listen to her calling the names. We also arrived about 10 minutes earlier, you have zero recollection what we look like? She also told another party that was there before us that she had been calling their name for hours and they never answered. When we did get a table she rudely shoved the menus into my hands and said, "Go sit at the open table outside." Excuse me? You're a hostess, isn't your job to take me to my table?

She was very rude, and put a sour note on my breakfast.

via veneto, abode or jiraffe's for a special occasion dinner?

I liked the food at Jiraffe and the atmosphere was nice, except that my boyfriend and I were the youngest ones there except for the servers. We were surrounded by an older crowd, like 40+ (and this was at 7 on a Saturday night). If that is the atmosphere you are looking for then it's great!

yuengling, where to get it?

Try any authentic Philly Cheesesteak places in your area.

I know that they definitely serve Yuengling (in bottles) at Philly's Best in Aliso Viejo (South OC) next to the movie theaters. They have other locations, but I don't know if they have Yuengling there also, I imagine they do. I went to school in DC and had the same craving for Yuengling when I came back to SoCal.

Here is a link to their website where you can find their other locations: http://www.eatphillysbest.com/pages/locate.html

Is Leda's worth the drive?

Yes! Leda's also makes regular sized cupcakes, not just the mini ones. Their vegan cupcakes and other baked goods are AMAZING. They don't taste like they are vegan ingredients at all and they taste, in my opinion, better than the regular. My favorite flavors were the dulce de leche, vegan red velvet, chocolate-vanilla and pumpkin.

I was not so much a fan of Yummy's. I felt the frosting was too sweet and cakes too heavy. I'm in a cupcake meetup group and the group favorite so far is Susie Cake. I am also a huge fan of Daintes (on Santa Monica Ave. near the 405 behind Winchell's Donuts). They have chocolate ganache dipped cupcakes that are filled with fresh whipped cream.

Scottish restaurants in LA?

Thanks for all the great recommendations so far.
More specifically looking for Bangers and Mash and scottish ales.

So disappointed at Joan's on Third

I had a prosciutto sandwich at Joans on Third, expensive but delicious! (or so expensive that it had to be delicious, I haven't decided yet)

Went another time and got a variety of their cupcakes. Okay, mostly dry and uninteresting. I tried the Cloud cupcake and was not enthusiastic by the grainy marshmallow fluff. It tasted like sugary sweet sand. Marshmallow fluff shouldn't crunch.
