Blush's Profile
Family foods I thought was normal
We always put ketchup on our eggs. I grew up in SW Ontario.
What discontinued products do you miss?
I'm not far from the border. Target runs are not uncommon. ;)
What discontinued products do you miss?
I'd miss way more than these items if I moved to the US. And while some of them would be food related (PC products, good chocolate bars, Shreddies, no hormones in milk--ever) the important ones have nothing to do with food.
What discontinued products do you miss?
Reese's Snack Barz by Hershey. They made other varieties but the Peanut Butter one was awesome. Enough to kill a craving but not insanely high in calories. I see the American Hershey site still lists them but they've been gone from Canada for quite a few years.
I also miss the Nestle milk chocolate bars with Smarties embedded in them. I assume Mars did something similar with M&Ms but I never saw them here.
I also miss Post Bran Flakes. They had a malty taste that isn't in Kellogg's or other brands. Apparently these are also still available in the States.
What discontinued products do you miss?
What are known as Ice Cubes in the States are still readily available in Canada, but they're called Icy Squares.
Beverage Calories
I don't usually "drink my calories". If plan to have a couple of alcoholic drinks then I adjust my day accordingly.
New Kraft product - chocolate-flavored cream cheese
In Canada (well, SW Ontario) Lactancia had a similar product a couple of years ago. I remember sampling it at the grocery store and liking the flavour. They were presenting it to be used in cheesecake. I haven't seen it in a while, though I haven't been looking either. It was a brick wrapped in foil; not in a tub.
POLL: Can you walk to an actual grocery store?
Until November 2011 I lived in London, Ontario, Canada; pop'n closing in on 400,000. I could walk to three grocery stores (Food Basics, Metro and Loblaws), and 2 of them were walks shorter than 5 minutes.
Now I live on the shore of Lake Huron, and my closest grocery stores (Sobeys and Zehrs) are a 15-20 minute drive away in Kincardine (pop'n 12,000). I'm still getting used to stocking up on weekends rather than popping over just before supper. I have, though, been pleasantly surprised by the selection.
12 McDonald's Menu Items That Failed Spectacularly
I'm in London, ON and my mom loved the pizza. My husband reminisces about ordering a few at a time in the early 90's. He was playing a lot of hockey at the time and always hungry. Now he's just always hungry. ;)
What discontinued products do you miss?
I miss Nielsen Cool Mints in the "Willo-pak". Since Cadbury took over Nielsen they still make the larger Pep but I liked the size of the Cool Mints. York peppermint patties do not measure up at ALL.
I also miss Caramilk Maple and chocolate popsicles, which may still exist somewhere, but I haven't seen them in ages.
Can't remember the last time I cried chopping onion
I'm also wondering about contacts. I thought I never cried while chopping onions and made fun of my husband for being a wimp (all in good fun). Then I had my glasses on one day, started chopping and finally realized the connection.
Canadian Thanksgiving
We had ours yesterday, on the actual day. We had prime rib roast, mashed potatoes, caulflower/broccoli gratin, brussel sprouts, coleslaw and apple and pumpkin pie. I was glad we didn't have turkey this year; it's not my favourite and usually we have it at Christmas too.
I've Rendered My Spouse Useless!
This happened to my mom. Dad could cook the basics before they got married, but has since forgotten. He can still make toast, pancakes, eggs, and he can grill stuff, but that's about it.
Kool Aid vs Freshie
I'm on SW Ontario, and freshie was around (at camp etc) when I was a kid, but everyone *knew* Kool-Aid was cooler. My mom actually used to buy Quench over anything else.
Family foods I thought was normal
Also from SW Ontario, and yes, the Nabisco package does still give the hot water instructions. Brown sugar is a must on mine.
Crush--Lemon, Grape, and Orange.
In Southwestern Ontario, Canada you can get Grape Crush sold in "Rainbow" 24-can packs: 6 each of Grape Crush, Orange Crush, Mug Rootbeer and Cream Soda. These 24 packs come in either regular or diet. You can also get 12 can packs of each of the single flavours EXCEPT GRAPE. This is really annoying, as I love the diet grape, but I don't want to have to buy a bunch of other flavours to get it. It's very annoying.
Sorry, no help, but commiseration.
"Only in Canada" food items: add to the list
The first store was actually in Hamilton, Ont.
ETA: sorry, didn't read down far enough. Oops!
"Only in Canada" food items: add to the list
Bulk Barn and Bulk Barrel are the two that are common in SW Ontario.
Milk in bags ... Are Canadians weird, or are Americans the weirdos?
We still get it in bags in London, Ontario.
Childhood favorite sandwich
Peanut butter and honey on white. Sometimes I'd ask for just honey. Another way to switch it up was to have pb and cherry jam (the only jam I would eat as a child--no seeds). Sometimes I got bologna or leftover roast turkey or beef, but the fave was peanut butter and honey.
What discontinued products do you miss?
I miss Laura Secord chocolate pudding cups. They were packaged in small tins with pop-tops. I remember in grade one I had to get one of the "lunchroom helpers" (one of two grade three students) to help me pop the top. Why they had 8 year olds supervising 6 year olds while the teacher was absent I'll never know, but man, that pudding was good.
Apple pie with cheese? Really?
It's also common in Southwestern Ontario, at least in my family.
Rum that you can sip??
I know this is an old thread, but tell your brother in Vermont he can easily get Havana Club rum in Canada. It costs more here than it does in Cuba, but it's widely available.
What shocked you the first time you ate it?
Fresh coconut. I was in grade 2 and we were learning about Barbados, so the teacher brought in some tropical treats. I wasn't expecting fruity crunchiness; based on appearance I thought it would be like creamy icing. Wrong.
What discontinued products do you miss?
I also used to love the honey as a dip. That was my go-to order as a kid.
Dessert and coffee in London?
Caffe Demetre has been closed for a few weeks. I've heard good things about the two Coffee Culture locations (one on Richmond Row and the other on Dundas near Wellington).
Old Food or Product Commericals that You Miss?
HP Sauce "makes beef sing". My family can still be heard singing this one sometimes, 20-odd years later.

Childhood food envy?
I don't really remember being envious of what was in other people's lunches as I was pretty happy with what I ate. My mom always included something she baked from scratch, and she never packed anything I actively disliked. I do remember wishing that I *liked* some of the items that the other kids brought, like fruit roll-ups, or oranges. They could do fun things like make shapes out of the roll ups and put orange peel sections in their teeth, then smile.
Family foods I thought was normal
I'm Canadian and I'm pretty sure my mom still makes every kind of sandwich with butter. Peanut butter, bologna, BLT, you name it.
