Any strawberries yet? (DTW)

MIddleton Berry Farm in Ortonville posted on FB that they expect picking to start in early June.

Crepes in the D? [Livonia, MI area]

What Crepe? does have another location, on Old Woodward just north of Maple.

Hepburn's Crepe at the Village Shop is in an old Toll House Cookie place, so I'm not sure how much room they have...although I did see some tables when I looked as I drove past.

Good food near IMAX theater on Mound rd. in Sterling Heights? [DTW]

There's a Rangoli Express in the same parking lot and I think you can eat in. Also, on the other side of 59 is Filipe's (sp?). Some people love it....don't happen to be one of them, but if you're looking for something close.

Healthy Food in Flint?

I was going to suggest both French Laundry and Taboon. Badawest is also a good choice, but Taboon is a little nicer inside. If you can make it to Grand Blanc, you're probably about ten minutes away, Taboon just opened another location on Saginaw street a few weeks ago. You'll get a decent meal at Luca's Steakhouse, also on Saginaw in Grand Blanc. There is a local chain in the area called YaYa's and they do only grilled chicken. Not much to the place but the chicken is grilled onsite and always tasty...you can eat inside but it's more like a fast food place.
Sounds like you'll be staying somewhere near the Redwood Lodge, if nothing else you can get a big salad there. On Hill Road just east of 475 there is a "gourmet" market called Oliver T's. They have counter service with nicely prepared meals to go or maybe you can sit inside at some small tables, it has been a few years since I stopped there.
Like rainsux, I'll always send someone to Ruggero's, it has been around for years. Might just be nostalgia for me, but I do love their lasagna.

CSAs near Rochester MI ? [dtw]

About 4-5 years ago I belonged to Maple Creek Farm. It's a CSA in the thumb but they deliver once per week to many sites in the area. My pick up was on a Thursday from someone's front porch in Troy. My box would be ready for me and you could swap out if there was something you didn't care for that week. It was a nice experience and forced me to cook with veggies I had never even eaten before. My only disappointment was I seemed to get a lot of the same stuff, which could get boring..they said it wasn't a good year for them.

Prepared Food at Farmers Markets [DTW & metro]

I agree with you IndyGirl about the Rochester market. Five or six years ago they were trying to figure out which way to go and asked the customer's what they wanted in a market. I'm pretty sure the majority didn't want crafts, etc.. so they have done a nice job of keeping that type of stuff out. I also don't like that they allow Great Harvest as they have a local bakery that sells there...can't remember the name. He has been since the market started and has good baked goods.
It opens Saturday, so we'll see who got in this year.

Komodo Kitchen - Indonesian - DTW

I just signed up for the event this Sunday....got the last spot. Has anyone attended yet? I was just wondering what to expect, other than a seared tongue.

Is Tilsiter cheese available anywhere? [Detroit area]

I would try Papa Joe's in Birmingham or Zingerman's in Ann Arbor...both have large cheese selections. Sometimes you find a prize at Trader Joe's.

Lino's Italian Restaurant in Rochester (DTW)

I went there this past fall with friends who used to live in Michigan. He is Italian and they love it. Two of us had the gnocchi and it was delicious. I agree about the salad and atmosphere...both made me feel like I had stepped back into the 70's. The place is small and easy to pass by, as I had for years. However it was packed inside and I remember the hostess telling us they had 125 kids in the basement for homecoming. It didn't cause any delay in our service. The only thing that bothered me was the attitude of our waiter, he was really rude. I should go back...thanks for the reminder.

Where to eat in kalamazoo and Three Rivers, Michigan?

The Crow's Nest on Westnedge is has a great menu. It's on the second floor of a building and is family friendly. It's also in Kalamazoo.

Buffalo Cheddar Popcorn in Ann Arbor?

Sorry to hear that!

Buffalo Cheddar Popcorn in Ann Arbor?

I think maybe now I should have taken a picture as they seem so elusive. Not a big chip or popcorn eater but they were in the big bag size. Also, remember they were on the bottom of the rack when looking for them. I'm not familiar with that part of town and make a habit of avoiding Walmart but I just looked it up and it's on Ellsworth Rd in Ypsilanti.
Tokyo I really hope they're still around by the time you get there.

Need help choosing Detroit-area restaurant gift

I agree with boagman on Forest Grill. Love the atmosphere with windows all around. I've been a few times and liked it each time. Don't even remember what I had but I didn't not like anything about it. Some friends came from out of town last month and had to meet someone...they loved it. This is a couple who travels a lot so I was pretty happy they really enjoyed the meal.

Tallulah is good too, but the menu I think is a little more limited. I find it a little too cozy in there...as in it's a small place and the tables are really close together.

truffle oil/salt [dtw]

Found truffle oil at the Nino's in Rochester.
Black 3.38 oz $12.99
White 3.38 oz $12.49

Not sure where you live in the metro area so this could be a drive...or not.

truffle oil/salt [dtw]

I'm not sure about the salt, but I bought truffle oil at Zingerman's a few years ago. It's expensive but they have small bottles. You might want to try Papa Joe's, in Birmingham, they have a large oil selection too.

Buffalo Cheddar Popcorn in Ann Arbor?

You're welcome tokyo! They were on the bottom shelf, so you just might be in luck.

Buffalo Cheddar Popcorn in Ann Arbor?

Found them!! I was at the Walmart in Ypsilanti and they were there....about six bags of them. Not sure when you're heading there but maybe they will still be around. Funny that's only the second time I've even been in a Walmart, in my life....I'm one of those people who avoid going there. Anyway, I was wandering around while my cousin bought groceries to take back to his kids in Jakarta and thought I would take a chance and look for you. I do hope they still have some when you get here.

Buffalo Cheddar Popcorn in Ann Arbor?

I just checked at the Plum on Maple and Dexter....no Buffalo Cheddar there. However they did have an empty slot so possibly that flavor was sold out and the brand was on sale. Didn't have time to find someone for help, sorry.

Scottish Cultural Center in Troy [DTW]

Ackroyd's is one of few places in the country where the Scots can get food from "the old country". Scottish meat pies, pork pies, black pudding (blood sausage), assorted baked goods and, of course, haggis. They also have imported candy, tea, cookies and the nectar of west Scotland, Irn Bru, which is more popular there than Coke. It's in a tiny little storefront on Five Mile at Beech and in many ways it's so old in there that you might think you are in Scotland. They are doing a nice job of trying to branch out and sell shortbread and scones at places like Nino's.

Scottish Cultural Center in Troy [DTW]

I was born in Scotland and would love to take this one on, but have a cousin visiting next week from Scotland via Jakarta. I think the last thing he would want to have while visiting the states is haggis, black pudding, etc...although I like them both. I would imagine that Ackroyd's is providing the products.

Scottish Cultural Center in Troy [DTW]

Being born in Scotland I would love to take this one on for Burns Night, but have have a cousin visiting next weekend from Scotland via Jakarta...I'm pretty sure the last thing he wants to eat is a haggis or black pudding. I do love both and would imagine that Ackroyd's is probably the supplier.

Startin a dining club in Novi/Farmington Hills [DTW]

I've been involved in two....what are you looking for...couples...everyone cooking together vs bringing the food prepared at home...the host sets the theme...host provides the recipes and have the others them or just try to follow a theme? There a lots of options...I think you have to consider which direction you're thinking about.

DTW - Page tangerines?

I looked today at Nino's, but they didn't have them. They did have Honey Tangerine's which I'm not sure if they are Honeybell's or not. Will be at Papa Joe's tomorrow and I'll check there too.

mr. b's - troy, mi

I drove by there about three this afternoon and noticed something going on. Although it didn't look like it was open. I knew they were closed and was wondering what was going on...thanks for the update.

Valentine's Day Dinner in Detroit Metropolitan Area (DTW)

Have you been to the West End Grill in Ann Arbor? I think it's a cozy place for Valentine's Day and the food is excellent...martini's aren't too bad either. That should fit into your drive time, but they don't seat many so you may have to make reservations soon.

Wolferman's

I had the same problem last year with delivery. I had sent some to a few friends and I think you could request a date of delivery. On three of them they were not delivered on time so I had to call them, as I knew all three were going out of town, and tell them to have someone watch for the package. When I complained they offered me a $25 discount on my next purchase....no thanks there won't be a next purchase!

DTW Downtown Cafe in Rochester

Have not even heard of this! My daughter is coming to town...maybe we'll check it out. Although she's looking for mom's home cooking.

Just looked it up....I've passed this a lot while riding the bike trail...didn't remember the name. I've always been interested so I'll make a point now to stop.

NYE dinner in Detroit and environs?

You might want to check Open Table as they will show who is still taking reservations.

NYE dinner in Detroit and environs?

I'm not sure where you're from or what you're looking for other than special...and I'm really surprised that no one has replied. Here are a few suggestions....

Sweet Lorraine's, in Southfield, has a fair amount of vegetarian options...some on the board really like it there. Although I don't think it's special occasion fare.

My recent favorite is Forest Grill, in Birmingham, but I'm not sure if there are a lot of options for you wife.

Zazios also in Birmingham is a good place to try. Lots of windows and they have a chef's table to watch the prep.

Tallulah also in Birmingham is a special occasion place with a cozy fun vibe. The owners have also just opened another place in Birmingham called Bella Piatti.

Cafe Muse, In Royal Oak, is advertising a four course prix fixe menu on NYE for $65.

Hopefully some others will join and give you suggestions. I will say that both Birmingham and Royal Oak are towns that you can stroll around in after dinner.

Good Luck!

Layer Cake Wine [Canton, MI]

I think it's a pretty common wine. You should be able to pick it up at most wine shops...might even want to try Meijer.
