Special occasion cake - help

I was just about to suggest La Cigogne, as well. Since they opened on Danforth, we've done full cakes from them a few times, and even the ready-made (i.e. on display) cakes have been fresh. Officially, I think they need 48-hrs notice to make something off their larger cake menu, which could be a better choice if this fits your timeline as they have more options on the list than what is on display in the shop.

Danforth Pizza House for sale

To those who have tried it under the new owners:

1) Are prices comparable?
2) Do they have a similar order-taking system (load up early, stop answering the phone when busy)?

Anatolian's Turkish Halal Restaurant - WOW!

My wife and I went for lunch earlier this week, our first time there. Ordered one of the lunch specials, as well as manti and zucchini pancakes off the regular menu. Everything was very tasty and fresh. Even the gratis bread they bring to your table upon ordering was good!

The lunch special is a great deal ($9.99), as you get your choice from two soups (we chose lentil), any cold app or salad from the regular menu (we chose eggplant salad) and the main comes fromm a list of five or six (we chose adana kabob). The meat portion on the lunch specials are understandably smaller than from the regular menu, and come with some rice and veggies.

Those zucchini pancakes, though...crisp on the outside, moist on the inside, just the right amount of dill and the yogurt on the side adds a nice touch.

Plan to return for dinner, kid in tow.

Anatolian's Turkish Halal Restaurant - WOW!

What are the portion sizes like for the non-Manti dishes you ate? From the pics on their site, the Iskender and Sautee look like a mountain of meat. The Adana looks more sparse, as do some of the other kabobs. Trying to gauge the value of some of the dishes. We were there for lunch, thought it was great, wish to return for dinner.

Thanks for the detailed review.

Two questions:

1) Are they busy enough to require a dinner reservation? I suppose this depends on the time/day of the week you were there.

2) Do you have a sense of kid-friendliness? We have a (usually) well-behaved two-year old who is used to eating out, but we still try to scope a place out before carting him there and tend to dine on the early side of dinner (<6pm). Considering the surrounding neighborhood, I figure it should be family-friendly.

Thanks in advance!

Cured Fish like Hoof Fish?

Never went to Hoof Fish, but Hooked sells in-house smoked and cured fish. They will also put together a board based on your preferences (types and amounts), including various accoutrements. Same goes for steamed/raw/poached items. Contact info at link:

Mother's Dumplings - coming to the Danforth (east of Pape)

They are open! SO was running errands and saw people inside. Popped in to buy some frozen dumplings and said that the menu they provided appeared similar to the one used at the Spadina location. Also, it was ~80% full at 2:30 in the afternoon so it's a promising start.

2014 Restaurant and Food Store OPENINGS!!

The guys in the shawarma shop a couple of doors north say it will be an A&W, based on a conversation they had with a contractor who came in to get some food.

Where to find Skotidakis 9% Plain Yogurt

The Danforth Foodland that you mentioned in your original post had ~10 on the shelf this morning around 10am priced at $4.99/tub. If you come to the neighborhood today (Sunday), please note that Ellas is closed on Sundays.

Good luck!

Mother's Dumplings - coming to the Danforth (east of Pape)

To be run by the daughter. "Same" menu, but with more finger foods and draught beer.

Dukem (Ethiopian resto review)

Was just about to post about the closing, and saw your comment, so will add: walking by Dukem two nights ago and saw that the front (glass) wall was papered up and there was a long, gracious note from the owner indicating that their lease was up. The note didn't provide many specifics beyond that about what had happened.

Simone's Carribean - Danforth

596 Danforth. North side, between Carlaw and Pape. Where Aravind (and others) used to be.

Greenwood Smokehouse BBQ: opening soon at Pape & Danforth

Just read this at TheGridTO ( Will open in Slider Revolution's old space, 673 Danforth just east of Pape.

They have a website and Twitter/Facebook accounts which don't currently contain many details, and their Instagram contains a bunch of shots of homemade-looking bbq from the past few months.

If they know what they are doing, they will make a killing in this neighborhood. Anyone have any additional info?

Almanqal - new Middle-Eastern at Woodbine and Danforth

Would you happen to have a phone number for them or know their hours? I can't find anything online.

Might want to drop by with the toddler over the weekend, so wish to confirm that they are open by noon on Sat/Sun to match his eating schedule.

Where's the best fried chicken in the GTA ?

Do you say it is soon-to-be-opening because a sign says something generic like "Opening Soon", or because there is a fast-approaching date that is specified somewhere?

Simone's Caribbean Restaurant, 596 Danforth Ave

Walked by yesterday (Tuesday) around 5pm. Walked in to an empty restaurant to snag a takeout menu, which were stacked on the bar near the entrance. Friendly guy in chef's whites came out from the kitchen in the back to ask if I needed any help. I told him I was grabbing a takeout menu and asked whether they were officially open yet. He confirmed that they were open.

Chowfind: Pili Pili

Thanks for the writeup...sounds like a great find.

Link to their menu:

You mention that the two beefs (mishkaki, short ribs) were marinated similarly, and the linked menu seems to describe all the grilled meats being spiced or marinated with their "secret Pili Pili blend". Since you also tried the chicken, would you guess that the flavors/marinades were the same across the three grilled meats you tried?

Also, how spicy was everything?

The Stockyards Smokehouse & Larder

A July 11 tweet mentions being closed for renos from July 13-25 (, and follows up with mention of adding A/C.

Same message still up on their homepage.

Pantheon vs. Avli?

(reply to millygirl's above post)

No inside info, but the short name is Kritamos and the address is 443 Danforth Ave. Alas, I don't have any useful info about the important details (the food).

Where's the best fried chicken in the GTA ?

They are quite active on Twitter, announcing all their specials in advance. For example, they tweeted on Thursday that they will be having their soft shell crab po'boy special on Fri/Sat.

Bar Isabel - College and Shaw - (new restaurant by Grant van Gameren )

Their website has been updated. Now contains food/drink menus, with prices.

Aravind closed

Link to some additional info:

Includes comment from Aravind's father (who was the chef) about looking to re-open in another location, possibly on the west side. Too bad for those in the Danforth neighborhood, but hopefully they can find another location where they can thrive.

Pho - Danforth and Jones

Walked by, late afternoon. They have a sign in the window saying they are opening on Sunday the 29, which is tomorrow. When we passed by last night, there was no such sign.

Patisserie La Cigogne opening on Danforth?

The Cigogne lady I asked (Asian lady that I think might be married to the owner?) seemed to imply that the oven they were hoping they could use for the tarte was already in the kitchen when they took over the space, and they were using a different one for the pastries. Wasn't Casa di Giorgio the previous occupant? The wood-fired oven premise for the tarte would make sense if they were trying to use a pizza oven. She said they were actually going to remove this oven to make space for another fridge and more prep surfaces.

Patisserie La Cigogne opening on Danforth?

Quick update: we stopped in for brunch on Sunday, and asked when they would start serving tarte flambée. We were told that they have been unable to get the oven up to par for baking the tarte, and so will not be serving it at the Danforth location. This is from the lady who has been running the front of house during the two weekend visits we have made. Disappointing, but at least they have many other tasty items on the menu.

Where to buy bbq propane on the danforth

Canadian Tire at Danforth & Main does refills. Good luck!
