Need help: 4 dinners in Reykjavik in Jan. 2015

One thought: while Sægreifinn is a must, I wouldn't worry about that being a dinner. If you're around during the day, I'd personally lunch there and save dinner for another restaurant.

Free the Grape! Wine shipments to MA Massachusetts

They have to do that for other states as well, already, and they because $150/yr is a no-brainer. This changes a lot.

There are wineries that already ship here- ones that are tiny enough- the rest can now as well.

Curious why ramen is so rare and yet sushi joints are on every corner?

Definitely. I really would kill for a real Izakaya.

August 2013 Openings and Closings

Yeah, I shuddered a bit to use the 'd' word, but it was useful shorthand. Anchovies is always a bit more restaurant-y, and I primarily think of Wally's as a music joint. Slade's I always forget about, but I would consider that Roxbury anyway (not that's a bad thing: I'm a big Darryl's fan).

Two things are in short supply in the South End: casual cheap bars and late-night takeout. Delux is always one of my go-tos for the former, and it would be the biggest loss since The Other Side from my standpoint.

What? That would be awful. Delux is like the last good dive bar (depending on how you classify Anchovies) that we've got left in the South End.

Info on Market Basket new locations?

I think that's an employee campaign not for one location, but for Demoulas' job as CEO (as the board is voting to remove him). To wit:

edit: or, exactly what was posted above. Basically, I think you can change that 'semi' to 'entirely' related ;)

July 2013 Openings and Closings

The South End version of FIve Horses Tavern- which seems like it's been taking forever to build out- looks like it is pretty dang close now. They've added the outdoor tables and chairs so might make it by end of July.

Highland Kitchen Brunch

All the food is excellent, but the black bean burger is great, and for my money those are the best pancakes in the city.

Is Marc Orfaly no longer involved?

New: Pulcinella Mozzerlla Bar and Ristorante

Yet, it still manages to be one of the worst restaurant sites I've ever seen. Tons of Lorem Ipsum text, which actually isn't the worst content on the site given gems like:

"The cuisine that we prepare is in the Mediterranean style which has been, for centuries, the foundation of many cultures. Therefore, we needn’t be surprised by the gastronomical fulfillment of the complexity found in true example of regional cooking. "

Nawlins Trip Advice

Did Paul just leave? He made me several rounds of very fine drinks just a few weeks ago.

Cocktail: Tom and Jerry

Swung by Hawthorne Friday before Christmas. Sadly, no Toms there, although they had an excellent nog variant.

Anyone with reviews of Jacob Worth?

It's hard to mess up sausages, and they're not bad here. But they really do have one of the best beer lists in town, even though it tends to be overlooked: a great selection of German and Belgians, with some locals. The other day I was there and they had Schneider Aventinus on tap, which is rare and fantastic.

Quiet restaurant in Boston or Cambridge?

I'm not sure if it meets your 'nice' requirement (although I always love it there) but upstairs at Marliave is generally pretty quiet. They have a lot of space, and not quite enough business to cover it.

Valentine's Day: the madness begins

I should be so lucky. On Saturday a friend and I- rather forgetting that it was V. Day eve- went to Bistro du Midi.

I had the foie gras appetizer and venison main course, and both were excellent (as were my friend's app and meal).

Even though they brought all of them at the exact same time.

Looking for restaurant suggestions near Boston operah House

You're only a few blocks from Marliave, which is a decidedly useful place (especially if you'd want a cocktail).

I saw that walking home last night (and thanks for the reminder- I was on the phone at the time, and couldn't for the life of me remember what used to be there. Which is a shame, because I actually liked La Brace a good bit).

Besides using the pizza boxes to block the windows, there was some other reason why I thought it was going to be a pizzeria, but I can't recall now. That being said, yes it's one more steak through the heart of the North End.

Bova's Late-Night Disappointment

They stop serving pizza/calzones/sandwiches at 1am. It was a change they made maybe a year or a year and a half ago- there was initially a small sign saying that it was "because of the city", but no real explanation was given.

And yes, the student population in the neighborhood has exploded in the last two years. So much that I'm contemplating moving out.
