Restaurants near (~1-2 mi) fairfield inn downtown
Just wanted to thank you again for the recommendation. We had a great meal, tried around 13 different tapas, and loved the sangria! I'd have to say that my favorite tapas were the bacon wrapped dates, and the aged jamon! Can't wait to make it back up to Chicago soon...(hopefully, maybe for Bus School)!

Good call leek,
My wife and I live in St. Louis. My brother-in-law is coming in from beijing. My in-laws are coming up from Kentucky. My brother-in-law's wife is a vegetarian and she won't be on this trip so I'm sure he'll be wanting meat since he doesn't really get it all that often at home. So, there's no need to restrict our choices to that. Although Chicago has plenty of excellent Steak houses, I'm pretty sure we don't want to go that route - plus, at $50 a person (including a drink or two), I don't know how good of a steakhouse we could afford. If we go Italian, it should be light Italian (somewhat of an oxymoron in St. Louis). Beyond that, we want a good atmosphere, but also someplace where we can have a good conversation since we don't see each other all that often.
So, in summation, we want meat, probably no asian fusion type stuff, if italian, light italian, and no steakhouses, ~$50 a piece.
Thanks!

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly! My wife and I always have really loved tapas. Sol y Nieve sounded pretty tasty, though I'll have to check with the in-laws to see if it suits their tastes. Any other suggestions out there?

My wife and I are heading up to Chicago next weekend to check out Kellogg at Northwestern for my MBA. My brother-in-law just so happened to be flying into Chicago so my wife's parents are joining us up there. We're staying at the Fairfield Inn (Ontario St, near Mich Ave). We're looking to go out for dinner Friday night for around $50 a person (or less) after drinks and everything. We're up for anything foodwise, but want something that's tasty not overly stuffy, but not really casual. We also don't want to have to hop a cab across town or anything, hopefully within a mile or two of the hotel.
Thanks!
Best Wine Shops in St. Louis
For a winebar and store, you can't beat 33 wine bar in Lafayette Square. 700+ wines that are carefully selected by the owner, Jake. Plus, there are around 140 hand-picked beers from around the world from which to choose. Affordable prices in a comfortable and helpful setting, and you've got a great place to purchase wine to-go or sit for a glass or two.
STL - moving to St. Louis Hills- restaurants?
I've hear good things about Onesto. I've been meaning to try it.
However, Katie's pizza is pretty good. I love their take on t-ravs and the pizza, though more expensive then some, has been awesome. They've had service issues but always addressed them and offered to comp our drinks. So, there's your first positive.
STL: Amighetti's: what were we missing?
I second Adrianna's on a quality italian sandwhich. However, Blues City Deli in Benton park has got to be the best all around sandwhich shop. Atmosphere + awesome food....can't go wrong with their beer prices either.
What's to eat in Ste. Gen. MO?
Yeah, it's pretty much a meat and potatoes kind of town, but it's a quaint, historical area with some possibilities. And, there are some things that will draw some people to the area such as the wineries and the historic buildings. The town does lack, however, a quality restaurant that does more than fried chicken and mashed potatoes. I suppose, however, a fairly rural community of ~5500 with no cities of any size within a 30 minute drive can support such an endeavour. Places have tried, in particular out near the wineries which are ~20 minutes outside the city, and as far as I recall failed.

I grew up very near Ste. Genevieve and now live in St. Louis so I can definitely appreciate the vast difference in food options that moving to the big city has brought. It's more down on the farm when it comes to cooking in Ste. Genevieve, although there are some staples as far as food you should try. Sara's Ice Cream shop is kind of a neat little Ice Cream place. It's pretty nostalgic like a soda fountain and I think they still sell a cup of coffee for a quarter there. You should also go by oberle meat market (again I know this isn't really a restaurant) but they have "oberle sausage" (like a summer sausage but a whole lot better) that is sold in Schnuck's and dierbergs vacuum packed in St. Louis. It is so much better when you get it warm and freshly made though.
As far as dining goes, the Old Brick serves "liver dumplings" a staple food in Ste. Genevieve. The menu is pretty much downhome cooking, but it fits the environment. If you venture out towards the wineries (Crown Valley, Chaumette, Cave, and Charleville) I would definitely recommend Chaumette for both wine and probably some of the best food in the area - food that's by no means limited to downhome cooking. I had a bison burger there that was awesome and they have a housemade roasted red pepper ketchup that's really good. My future father in law had a seared tuna salad that I know he really enjoyed. If you do make it out that way, try their Anrie wine. It's pretty tasty.
Hope that helps a little bit.
Agave Tequiliria - STL
Yeah, I had read that, which struck up my interest. I guess I'll just have to go and try it out. If I don't have expectations, I can't be let down!
Agave Tequiliria - STL
I think this is open now. Has anyone gone there yet? It's my understanding that it's authentic Mexican cuisine and not in the Tex-mex, Americanized fashion.
going to St. Louis... recommendations???
I second 33. Great wine AND beer selection! I think well over 400 wines and 100 beers, most of which you won't find everywhere. The owner, Jake, is also really helpful and you can sense the passion he has for wine and his customers. I've never been there when he isn't behind the bar.
Need a place in Dogtown or the Hill for small group
Chuy Arzola's is a great place for some good "American" Mexican. They have some good happy hour specials as well (2 for 1 margaritas). There's also Olympia - Greek restaurant. Both of those were in dogtown. As far as the Hill goes, I've always liked Rigazzi's. It's not the very best Italian on the hill but it's good and it always tastes better after a "fishbowl" of Bud!
Downtown St. Louis Lunch
Eleven Eleven Mississippi (1111 Mississippi), just a bit south and west of downtown in Lafayette Square is always a great bet for lunch
