Servers who pick up dishes but not flatware between courses: was I rude to bring this up?

What annoys me more is when my dish is brought, but then I must wait for the flatware to come.

Viridian Farms change of ownership confirmed

They will no longer be a farm. They will be a store selling Euro import food items. Same owners, but with one added partner who has a lot of know-how on importing food.

Let's ban the word GUYS!!!

Screw that, I'll order only so much as I'll drink, meaning a half pint. And I don't feel any less masculine either. It's called low alcohol tolerance.

if you could live anywhere at any income level, what would you choose?

Right here in Portland where I am. I have access to one of the best farmers markets to be found anywhere in addition to my own garden, amazing and yummy local cheese, food carts, hazelnuts, beer & wine.

No immediate financial reward for being nice.

Let's ban the word GUYS!!!

Yes, that is what happens in countries where there's no tipping.

Suggestions for a first-time visitor?

Oh here is another bit of news: the Blue Star pear/pine fritter finally made an appearance last weekend!

Exactly. Negotiate and get it in writing. In the absence of a written agreement, everything that is installed as in screwed down etc, stays. Anything not installed is NOT part of the real property and is considered personal property, therefore if buyer wants it he had better get it into the sale contract.

I'd rather select my own food.
Not rude, but kinda strange.
Only exception being were I sick or crazy busy.

Best/worst Thanksgiving ever...

At least none of my Thanksgivings have resembled these! http://awkwardfamilyphotos.com/2014/1...

Oh and Pix Patisserie of course.

Suggestions for a first-time visitor?

I never miss the Portland Farmers Market at PSU. It might be Martha Stewart's favorite; whenever in town she blogs the hell out of it with many photos and vendors' back stories.
Re Pok Pok: There are other locations. You needn't go to the flagship shop. There's even a cart at the airport. Because, Portland.
I used to work across from Blue Star, and am undergoing withdrawal these days...

Sugar Cube or Palace Cakes. Sugar Cube not open Monday, same for many places.

Returning food in ethnic restaurants...

Please explain precisely what is an "ethnic" restaurant. Because to be accurate, all food is "ethnic" be it pizza, fish & chips, and hamburgers.

As of January it is a venture of chef Leather Storrs & partners, they of Noble Rot fame. Haven't been yet, but am eager to try given the success of the latter.

If someone asks my opinion, I'm giving it. The difference between VD & Pok Pok wings? One is tasty and one of the best things I've ever eaten. The other is just plain awful. People don't come to CH for icons, they come for the best food possible.

Oregon Trip Report Sept 2014

Thanks for the report! I've always thought Mo's was way overrated.

Suggestions for a first-time visitor?

Why is Voodoo on there? Do you want great donuts or do you want "interesting" nearly inedible globs that might resemble genitalia? Want to be among the hapless tourists waiting in line for an hour in the cold rain? Not even minimum deliciousness.
Do Blue Star. I just had the Crème Brulee & Key Lime/Meyer Lemon. The Pear Fritter will be out when you come. Among the best donuts anywhere.
You're welcome.
Review some of the reports here, especially of Grayelf.
Do the Portland Farmers Mkt Saturday AM at PSU.

Ding! Round 9 in Portland for a Vancouver Hound

Went to Blue Star Downtown this morning. Two fritters were banana/walnut & apple. Guessing pear in ten days.

Ding! Round 9 in Portland for a Vancouver Hound

Have never been impressed with the drinks or food at JM.
Have not been to the newest Blue Star. I'm used to downtown which is nearly always closed by 4. The pear-pine nut fritter should be appearing this time of year.

Revised Portland Itinerary for October critic welcome

You are not the "wine in line kind of people"? Aren't you going to wine country?
Excellent list.
Bear in mind that Cacao is half a block from Blue Star.
I prefer Ken's but you'll find loyalists on both sides.
Skip the Deschutes food.
Other pastries to seriously consider: Bakeshop (either their own, or at Ristretto or a coffee cart SW Alder between 10-11th), and Sugar Cube.

Where can I find actually good coffee in PDX?

Frankly, no, I can't give any first hand elaboration, as I don't drink coffee. But I've many friends who are well-traveled and picky about their coffee, and they swear by it. Try it and make up your own mind. http://www.thrillist.com/eat/nation/b...

Thanks for the report! And for the hint on Pizza Maria. Division is so pizza-heavy it's hard to keep them all in mind. I just had Blue Star's newest fritter, the banana walnut.

tipping with limited service

1. I've a real problem with being expected to tip on the front end before knowing how long a wait for food, will I get what I ordered, and am I expected to bus my own table.

Downtown/no car/local beer and wine

You can get around just great on Trimet. Go to their site. You can get a multi-day pass. Many breweries and urban wineries easily accessible. On SW Broadway downtown for tasting is http://www.oregonwinesonbroadway.com/
Scroll down over recent visitor reports (especially search out any by grayelf), you'll find a ton of highly regarded places, 90% being easy to reach carless. Do a few minutes of reading, come back with questions. What is your budget?
Best food streets eastside are 28th, Division, and Alberta.
