Where can I find actually good coffee in PDX?

Frankly, no, I can't give any first hand elaboration, as I don't drink coffee. But I've many friends who are well-traveled and picky about their coffee, and they swear by it. Try it and make up your own mind. http://www.thrillist.com/eat/nation/b...

Thanks for the report! And for the hint on Pizza Maria. Division is so pizza-heavy it's hard to keep them all in mind. I just had Blue Star's newest fritter, the banana walnut.

tipping with limited service

1. I've a real problem with being expected to tip on the front end before knowing how long a wait for food, will I get what I ordered, and am I expected to bus my own table.

Downtown/no car/local beer and wine

You can get around just great on Trimet. Go to their site. You can get a multi-day pass. Many breweries and urban wineries easily accessible. On SW Broadway downtown for tasting is http://www.oregonwinesonbroadway.com/
Scroll down over recent visitor reports (especially search out any by grayelf), you'll find a ton of highly regarded places, 90% being easy to reach carless. Do a few minutes of reading, come back with questions. What is your budget?
Best food streets eastside are 28th, Division, and Alberta.

Actually, for Portland Farmers Mkt at PSU, top biscuit dish goes to Springwater Farm, NW corner of market, biscuit with mushroom gravy. A must-have.

Portlandia Itinerary

Good list. I'd check out Lauretta Jean (BEST biscuits in Portland), Bakeshop (amazing for both sweet & savory), Sugarcube (ditto).
It's "Meat Cheese Bread" and it's good.

Why oh why did you not use my host(ess) gift at your dinner party?

In many cultures it is considered poor form to open ANY gift in front of the giver. If gift is not to their liking it could be revealed in the reaction, causing everyone to lose face.

Reporting on our 9th eatfest in Portland

Was at Bakeshop today and spoke with Kim herself, she of the James Beard Award for her book. The figgy scone is one of my faves but today we had the strawberry buckwheat scone, blueberry bran muffin, and the savory croissant of ricotta parmesan & tomato. Incredible. If you can, always try making it to the shop itself. If not, Ristretto carries product, as well as the coffee cart SW Alder between 10-11th.

Re movie theatres: yes the vintage are fine, but I also like Living Room Theatres. Good food, nice happy hour, and Mon-Tue are only half price!

So it is forbidden to use it? :)

A gift is a gift. You are under no obligation to do anything with them. You may throw them away, donate to a thrift shop, re-gift them, whatever. If not, it is not a gift.

I didn't know "shal" was a word. Learned something new today. Thanks.

Do you offer to clean the toilet? Especially if you used it?

Honeymoon in PNW

Mods will promptly delete any lodging posts, as this is a food board. For that, suggest you go to tripadvisor.

There has been a wealth of posts by/for visitors on this subject. Suggest you take twenty minutes, scroll down and read a few reviews, then come back with specific questions about places of interest. That is how posters get more of a response. Help us to help you kinda thing.

When are you coming and which days of the week? Specific kinds of food you like? How old the kids? Budget? Do you drink? Unless it's a steakhouse, every place is veg friendly.

Personal Challenge: Eat at every Asian restaurant on 82nd Ave between NE Russell and SE Foster

Speaking of that area, I attended the first Asian Night Market at Fubonn last night. Huge letdown, especially to anyone who has been to the one in Richmond BC. Tiny footprint, very few Asian food vendors, unsafe walking conditions with all the cars, serious traffic & parking issues.

Sounds as if you enjoy the role of being the long-suffering martyr.

Where do you buy your watermelon?

This board is for Portland. They are available now and in season in Portland. And they are delicious.

Tips for More Tips: Waitresses Who Draw Smiley Faces Make More Money

Nope, not "docking pay". Tips, and how large/small they are, are rewards for how good the service is. More of a reward system than a punishment one. Guess it depends on how you choose to look at it, and how good a server you are.

A beef: "Is this your first time here?"

These days everyone believes they are a special snowflake.

A beef: "Is this your first time here?"

If I say "yes" it's usually followed by the dreaded "Allow me to explain how the menu works".

What should one definitely try in Portland?

Gilt is gone.
I would suggest Biwa, Little Bird, Portland Farmers Mkt Saturday morning at PSU.
Also suggest you read through a few recent extensive visitor reports on more recent openings, and form some more specific questions based on that wealth of info.

Voodoo donuts are awful. Even Safeway makes better. Question is, do you want quality or do you want "interesting" i.e. things shaped like genitalia etc. If you want the former go to Blue Star. Finest ingredients, dough made fresh by hand daily, clean shop, friendly service. And just plain delicious, among the best donuts nationwide. Get the Valrhona Chocolate Crunch, Pear Fritter or the Key Lime/Meyer Lemon.

"Starbucks Demands Barista Remove Tattoo or Resign"

Exactly. I must observe a dress code. It says I may wear blue jeans only on Friday. I may wear pink/purple/white/brown/black jeans any day I wish. Women may wear blue jeans skirts any day they wish. It's a stupid rule. But if I want to work there, that's the way it is.
