Why oh why did you not use my host(ess) gift at your dinner party?

A gift is a gift. You are under no obligation to do anything with them. You may throw them away, donate to a thrift shop, re-gift them, whatever. If not, it is not a gift.

I didn't know "shal" was a word. Learned something new today. Thanks.

guests not offering to do dishes, is it rude?

Do you offer to clean the toilet? Especially if you used it?

Honeymoon in PNW

Mods will promptly delete any lodging posts, as this is a food board. For that, suggest you go to tripadvisor.

There has been a wealth of posts by/for visitors on this subject. Suggest you take twenty minutes, scroll down and read a few reviews, then come back with specific questions about places of interest. That is how posters get more of a response. Help us to help you kinda thing.

When are you coming and which days of the week? Specific kinds of food you like? How old the kids? Budget? Do you drink? Unless it's a steakhouse, every place is veg friendly.

Personal Challenge: Eat at every Asian restaurant on 82nd Ave between NE Russell and SE Foster

Speaking of that area, I attended the first Asian Night Market at Fubonn last night. Huge letdown, especially to anyone who has been to the one in Richmond BC. Tiny footprint, very few Asian food vendors, unsafe walking conditions with all the cars, serious traffic & parking issues.

Sounds as if you enjoy the role of being the long-suffering martyr.

Where do you buy your watermelon?

This board is for Portland. They are available now and in season in Portland. And they are delicious.

I generally go here for tofu products. Great salad roll with peanut sauce, lemongrass tofu etc.

Tips for More Tips: Waitresses Who Draw Smiley Faces Make More Money

Nope, not "docking pay". Tips, and how large/small they are, are rewards for how good the service is. More of a reward system than a punishment one. Guess it depends on how you choose to look at it, and how good a server you are.

A beef: "Is this your first time here?"

These days everyone believes they are a special snowflake.

A beef: "Is this your first time here?"

If I say "yes" it's usually followed by the dreaded "Allow me to explain how the menu works".

What should one definitely try in Portland?

Gilt is gone.
I would suggest Biwa, Little Bird, Portland Farmers Mkt Saturday morning at PSU.
Also suggest you read through a few recent extensive visitor reports on more recent openings, and form some more specific questions based on that wealth of info.

College Visits and 3 Days in Portland

Voodoo donuts are awful. Even Safeway makes better. Question is, do you want quality or do you want "interesting" i.e. things shaped like genitalia etc. If you want the former go to Blue Star. Finest ingredients, dough made fresh by hand daily, clean shop, friendly service. And just plain delicious, among the best donuts nationwide. Get the Valrhona Chocolate Crunch, Pear Fritter or the Key Lime/Meyer Lemon.

"Starbucks Demands Barista Remove Tattoo or Resign"

Exactly. I must observe a dress code. It says I may wear blue jeans only on Friday. I may wear pink/purple/white/brown/black jeans any day I wish. Women may wear blue jeans skirts any day they wish. It's a stupid rule. But if I want to work there, that's the way it is.

College Visits and 3 Days in Portland

Near the Benson (five minutes walk) are so many great places. Bunk Sandwiches, Lauretta Jean, Courier Coffee (amazing cookies too), Kenny & Zuke's, Little Bird. Not many good places on the water, sadly. Streets such as NE/SE 28th, SE Division, or NE Alberta would serve pretty much any/all of your listed needs other than waterways, and give you that Portland feel. I love Paley's. Pioneers of our food scene, and they still have it.

From YYZ (Toronto) to PDX

Do you want great donuts or do you want an "experience"? For great donuts, Blue Star. For crappy icky creations shaped like genitalia, try Voodoo, wait in a line around the block like all the other tourists who don't know any better.
For beer pub I like Horse Brass & Saravesa.
Can't miss pastry/dessert includes Sugarcube & Little T.
Another must is Portland Farmers Market. NOT to be confused with Portland Saturday Market.
I suggest you search this board a bit and you'll find some outstanding reports. Especially any by greyelf. http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/978364

About Oregon Truffles.

Bonjour! There are little black or white ones, very expensive, highly prized for their flavor. Usually get them at farmers markets such as http://www.portlandfarmersmarket.org/
Yes, there is a festival in January. http://www.oregontrufflefestival.com/

Hilarious Menu Parody of Guy Ferry's Dreadful Times Sq Restaurant

Notice I used the name he was born with, not his pretentious fake name. I seriously doubt he'd waste money on attorneys. He's a public figure, thus open to satire with no recourse, US Supreme Court upheld this in Jerry Falwell vs Larry Flynt. Also, the domain was available, too bad so sad. Yeah, over the top was necessary, otherwise it would have resembled too well the original!

Where's my change!?!

Totally agree. A couple years ago my employer asked me to commit healthcare fraud. I refused. Saying "My boss told me to do it!" would not have helped as a defense in court.

Chicago Foodies to Cannon Beach

Native lifelong Portlander. Going through Seaside alone on a summer Saturday is slow going. You are assuming there is no traffic. You can't average 60mph. Half hour drive time at 3am, for sure.

Chatsworth, when people post requests for recs without having done an ounce of research, I ignore them. If they won't lift a finger to help themselves, why should I bother helping them?
