Trip Report from (another) SF hound - Thanks Portland!
Voodoo: yes I guess that's the reason they go, suppose you're right. That's why I always ask people "Do you want interesting donuts or good ones?"
For good donuts: Coco at two downtown locations. Get the "Coco". Sorry to some if I sound like a broken record on this. Others on this board also have their favorites that don't include VD.

You're welcome. And thanks for the report.
Next time at Courier get their chocolate chunk cookie. One of the best in town.
Portland Wine
Thank you for the report! Are you sure you don't mean Olympic Provisions?
Trip Report from (another) SF hound - Thanks Portland!
Thanks for reporting!
Teahouse at Lan Su is Tao of Tea. Yes you must pay garden admission in order to eat there. Their main teahouse and shop is on SE Belmont.
Sorry to hear your chose touristy over quality when going for donuts. Another tourist bites the dust. I try warning 'em to no avail...
how do you handle this??? [Moved from New Jersey]
Adding in a tip after the customer has signed is a crime. I'd fire any server who did that.
Vancouver BC Hound returning for more Portland chow
Get the caramel by Sahagun at Cacao.

Bakeshop: orange chocolate fig buckwheat scone
K & Z for bagel & lox.
It will be in the 80's by weekend.

At Cacao a must is the Luscious Caramel by Sahagun.
Wine: allow 50 minutes each way. Other places to try: Anne Amie, Stoller, Domaine Serene. Big "meh" on Tori Mor wine.
Don't eat a meal at Cana's Feast. Pretentious jerks.
I'm exhausted just reading your itinerary. Please make a report!

If at Farmers Mkt you're in the mood for sweets you'll have ample choices with Pearl Bakery, Alma Chocolates, and Two Tarts.
Another must for baked goodies is Bakeshop. Or get their stuff at Ristretto.

Not alone in my Nostrana service experience. I've read many reports of others who had the same.

Evoe is a lovely idea.
Tabla is more generally Mediterannean than strictly Italian, and is one of my favorites.
Can't imagine how you came up with Nob Hill.
I don't get your Helser's thing at all...
Service at Nostrana is so bad. Go to Ken's Artisan Pizza.

If you're in line at PFM for Pine State by 8:10, you'll be served first at the 8:30 opening bell!
Best location for endless chowing and drinking!
No, it's not. It's directly west of downtown. A decent hill, yes it is!
[PDX] Source for Prime, Wagyu, or Kobe Beef?
Ditto that. And USDA couldn't care less about fraud. All that matters to them is if it is called "beef" it is in fact beef.
Portland restaurant and bar recommendations please (researched)!!
That doesn't happen until late August. 2225 E Burnside.
Portland restaurant and bar recommendations please (researched)!!
And Amnesia Brewing is on Mississippi.
Indie: don't get so hung up on this eastside/westside thing. Everything is close. Late night to 12/Hawthorne carts is a ten-minute drive. Late night near you is Roxy's, an overpriced hipster greasy spoon.
San Francisco Hound Coming to Portland...Please Critique My List For Your Wonderful Food City!!!
Pizza at Ken's Bakery is a totally different deal than at his pizza place. At the latter it's a wood-burning oven of clay from France, bakes it at 825.

Thanks for doing your own research!
Old Town night spots are for the young bridge and tunnel crowd to get drunk, dance, and get picked up. I can't say what kind of "lively" is for you. Nothing notable in the way of food or drink. Must-do west side bar: Teardrop. Thatch? Absolutely! While there, two doors down is Pour Wine Bar, owned by an Advanced Sommellier from the Court of Master Sommelliers, a title held by only 273 people worldwide.
Chocolate shop is Cacao not Cocoa. Get the "luscious caramel" by Sahagun.
Carts downtown: Ziba's (not (Zibar's) has been closed for awhile. The best downtown carts are open only weekdays mid-day. Of course there are exceptions.
Cart pod on N. Mississippi has beer.
Want to be precise here: you said "Saturday Farmers Market". There's "Portland Saturday Mkt" that is a hippie craft fair with mediocre food. And there's Portland Farmers Mkt at PSU on Saturday 8:30 - 2. The latter has excellent food and you can sample some of our best bakers plus hot dishes by the likes of Pine State Biscuits. Worth the wait. Plus you can pick up fresh local berries! Also at PFM you'll find Alma and Pearl Bakery.

You hotel is strategically located between Coco Donut and the Rose/Japanese Garden. Nice.
Ken's Bakery is a must, IMHO. And his pizza is my favorite, gotta go against some posters there.
Saraveza is not a brewery, but as a beer joint it just screams "Portlandia". Good pasties too.
San Francisco Hound Coming to Portland...Please Critique My List For Your Wonderful Food City!!!
If you go to Coco get the "Coco".
While at PSU Portland Farmers Mkt, check out following bakeries: mobile wood-burning oven TasteBud Farms, Two Tarts, and Pearl Bakery.
Kid-oriented beer places to avoid: Hopworks and Laurelwood.
Best location for endless chowing and drinking!
I was referring to the comment about most of the choice bakeries being on west side.
Best location for endless chowing and drinking!
Kennedy School, while not as central as your top choices, is strategically located near NE Alberta & Killingsworth. One to consider.
A coffee must-have: Ristretto
Alder not Adler.
Plenty of great bakeries on the east side! Little T and Bakeshop to name but two.

Good on you for doing your research and bringing the questions! I don't even reply anymore to people who can't be bothered to do some poking around on their own.
I'd trade Amnesia for Bridgeport, Flavor Spot for Waffle Window, Coco Donuts for Voodoo (you want great donuts or interesting ones?). Do Pine State Biscuit at Portland Farmers Mkt at PSU. Check out Distillery Row. http://www.distilleryrowpdx.com/
Also consider Tanuki.
Funniest Thing a Server Said to You
I don't get it. You claim she treated them with "more professionalism than they deserved", yet made a veiled threat of having committed bio-terrorism. Were she working for me, she'd be fired.
Or you're just repeating an urban myth.
"Hitting" on the Waitress (server) Is it OK?
Nick Cage married his waitress from a sushi place. But he's rich and famous, so guessing he's more entitled than we poor slobs.
Best location for endless chowing and drinking!
By close-in eastside I include parts of SE/NE/N that are easily accessible from downtown in ten minutes. As far east as 39th, as far north as Shaver. So no, that map is a bit overly restrictive as to eastside. Westside, that's a pretty good rendition of greater downtown that includes Pearl, Old Town, and NW.
If you're a drinker you can't miss Distillery Row, speaking of eastside. http://www.distilleryrowpdx.com/
Best location for endless chowing and drinking!
Good on you for doing the research! Close-in east side or downtown will do the trick. It's really easy to get around. Don't want to talk specific hotels as this is a food site, I don't wish to get deleted. Good idea to be near the bars (another to consider is Beaker & Flask).
You need to make your reservation now, as that is the weekend of the 25th annual Waterfront Blues Festival.
"Hitting" on the Waitress (server) Is it OK?
Reminds me of the Saturday Night Live skit where a couple goes to an Italian restaurant, and the staff get increasingly forward with the female customers. They start with sticking tongues in ears, all the way to full-on sex on the tables. Wife thinks it's sweet, and indicative of their culture. Husband has had enough, drags his wife out of there, she says "Where will we eat then?" Husband: "How about that Greek place over there?"
