Weekday Lunch near Bar Harbour that Won't Break the Bank

I have not been in over a year. I will give it another try. Never impressed by Neal's French food.

Weekday Lunch near Bar Harbour that Won't Break the Bank

Petit Rouge not for a humble artist. Overpriced food, haughty unfriendly chef. Philip Ho has very good dim sum in Sunny Isles Beach. Miami Juice also in SIB has very good salads and smoothies.

Specchio at 9485 Harding in Surfside is a delight. No pretense, solid Italian food and sweet service. Do not know if it is open for lunch. If not, then cross the Broad Causeway to Il Piccolo Cafe at 2112 NE 123rd St. in North Miami. Tourist free zone with good food, large portions, modest prices and you can eat outside. They are definitely open for lunch. The owner is the chef and his wife is the hostess. They have been there for years and I go frequently for lunch. Their entree salads are big enough for two as are their sandwiches. They will put fish or chicken on the salad. A humble artist would be comfortable at either place.

NYC Foodie visiting Miami for hole in the walls ??

I was recently at a wine event at Happy Wine. Fantastic paella and tapas. Excellent wine prices. Latin American places on Collins in the 60's and 70's such as Buenos Aires Bakery at 7134 and Mixtura, upscale Peruvian at 7118 Collins are two of my favorites. Manolo at 7300 for Argentine churros right out of the oven. There are many choices in Little Havana. Everyone recommends Versailles as do I for its unique atmosphere and the smell of the cafe cubano. El Palacio de Los Jugos at 5721 W. Flagler is a market and restaurant and you eat at picnic tables outside. Lots of Cuban food and very reasonable prices. Great juice drinks and fresh fruit. Miami has lots of joints, you just have to be adventuresome. Hope this helps.

Pan Ya Thai - North Miami Beach

King Palace is fantastic. Hot pots, noodle soups, vegetable dishes, shrimp with walnuts, grouper in a corn sauce. We eat there frequently.

Seeking South Beach restaurant advice

Go to Juvia at 1111 Lincoln Road. In the penthouse level of a building designed by the famed Swiss architects Herzog and de Meuron. The views are some of the best in SOBE. The design of the space is spectacular. The cuisine is French, Peruvian and Japanese fusion. We had the sesame tuna with the hearts of palm appetizer and the chocolate candy bar dessert. Excellent food with prices in the upper 20's to low 40's for entrees. Service was very good. Well worth it considering the views and the ambiance. It gets noisy late and is an "in" hotspot. BTW, had a mediocre meal at the Dutch and will not return.

Foodie parents coming to miami in 2 weeks--looking for reco's

Xixon at Coral Way and SW 21st Ave. is an excellent Asturian restaurant. Spanish tapas and wine. Nice 3 level dining with a beautiful vinoteca on the lower level. Full Spanish menu and wine list. Almond tart with homemade nougat ice cream fabulous. Very good bread and sangria also.

J and G Grill in the new St. Regis Bal Harbor is another favorite. Dining room faces east so you have ocean views. Beautiful room, tables not too close and soft music. Local red snapper with smoked chili glaze was very good with a nice portion for $28. Prices surprised me with the fish under $30. Salted caramel ice cream sundae with peanuts, popcorn and chocalate sauce was a perfect finish. An added bonus, valet parking is free.

Hope this helps

Good espresso in Miami?

You brought back some great coffee memories from Seattle. I spent July in Seattle. There seem to be independent coffee shops in every neighborhood. My favorite was Fonte's at their cafe downtown. And the hot chocolate at Dilettante on Capitol Hill is an all time best. Enjoy some of our cafe con leche or café cubano. It will be different from the Emerald City.

Please help me send my parents to an unforgettable meal in Boca Raton!

If you want your parents to have a memorable meal, they should drive 15 minutes northeast to 32 East in Delray Beach. Superb food, very good service, good wine list and they can dine al fresco. New American cuisine and fair prices for what you receive. I have eaten at many places in Boca/ Delray and 32 East is by far the best IMHO. Bros is a chain with mediocre Italian food. Atlantic Avenue is a nice place to walk off your meal afterwards. They could even stop at Kilwins for killer ice cream and fudge at 402 E. Atlantic Ave.

Dim Sum in Sunny Isles

Report on lunch today. Place was full. Ordered clams with black bean sauce, taro dumplings with pork, hand pulled noodles with chives and mushrooms, salt and pepper calamari, spare ribs and bean curd dumplings. Service friendly and quick. Carts rolling. Did not like the spare ribs, sent them back and were not charged. All the other choices were very good, especially the noodles and the calamari. The clams were delicious in that black bean sauce. $30 before tip. We loved it and are very happy Chef Philip Ho is in Sunny Isles Beach. It is definitely worth a drive. Comparable to some of the best we have had in other cities with real Chinatowns.

Dim Sum in Sunny Isles

Report on dim sum lunch today. The decor has been changed from Emerald Coast. Tablecloths and fancy coverings on the seats. Helpful and friendly service. We sampled various dishes (8 in all) and liked them all. Congee with pork, shrimp and pork dumplings ( most places call them siu mai) , shrimp crepe, baked pork buns, chef special dumplings, chiu chow dumplings, truffle and scallop dumplings and a dessert gelatin. We had two dishes from the carts and the rest we ordered off the menu. We enjoyed all our choices and I loved the dessert dish which was longan and gobi berry gelatin. Very good. The lunch bill was $30 including tax but before tip.

Two negatives, no soup dumplings and no fried squid which are two of my favorites. I was quite pleased with lunch and will return for dinner. You can get dim sum at night and they also have an extensive dinner menu with some intriguing choices. BTW, no website yet. I urged the manager to be online ASAP. I want this restaurant to succeed and hope more Chowhounds will make the trip to Sunny Isles Beach to give them a try.

Dim Sum in Sunny Isles

Have found XLB in other places in NYC and in other cities. But Joe's are still the gold standard for me.

Dim Sum in Sunny Isles

Going for lunch today. Can't wait to try and see how it compares to NYC, SF, Seattle and Chicago. I hope they have XLB (soup dumplings)? I will report back.

Looking for a restaurant with a "Florida" feel. Ft. Lauderdale/Hollywood

Where is the Taco Shack on Hollywood Beach?

In Miami (SoBe area) April 23-26th with 3 foodies

I strongly recommend that you eat at Sugarcane at 3252 NE 1st Ave. Small plates, great tastes, great bar scene and always mobbed. Their brussel sprouts in balsamic is as good as it gets. I never eat brussel sprouts anywhere but at Sugarcane I love them. Bacon wrapped dates stuffed with Manchego cheese is another fav. Outside patio has a great Miami vibe. Last time we had pear cobbler for dessert and it was outstanding. Enjoy.

Thanks.

Washington wines

Floridian coming for first time to Seattle and staying in Capital Hill. What are the restaurants with the best lists for Washington state wines?

BYOB in Seattle

Floridian visiting Seattle for first time. Any places that allow you to bring your own wine? What is the usual corkage? I will be staying in the Capital Hill area. Also seeking any hidden gems. Love all cuisines especially Asian. We get lots of Cuban and South American food at home. Any help appreciated.

Anyone been to Pescacane lately? Ideas for a quiet dinner NOT on Miami Beach Saturday night?

Specchio Cafe at 9485 Harding Ave. in Surfside, telephone 305.865.5653, is another Italian. We live in Aventura and meet our son there. He lives in South Beach and the location is perfect. Easy street parking. The food is good and the service very friendly. There are several outside tables also. Quiet ambiance and mostly locals eat there. Nothing high powered. Extensive list of pastas including whole wheat. Have eaten at Pescane and Ragazzi also and I prefer Specchio.

Mexican near Aventura Mall

Cheen Huaye has Yucatan cuisine with serious chicken mole, tacos al pastor, carnitas, lime chicken and good ceviches. It is small and the owner is the chef. Pacquito's is typical fun Tex-Mex that teens might prefer. For real Mexican try Cheen Huaye

Szcheuwan/Cantonese chinese restaurant 'near' Aventura

Very glad you enjoyed King Palace. Wish we had more of these authentic Asian eateries. I also love the snow pea tips, singapore noodles and the hot and sour. We like the dim sum at Hong Kong Noodle at 1242 NE 163rd St. in N. Miami Beach. Dreary atmosphere and no carts. But they have fried squid, Shanghai soup dumplings and plenty of other dumpling choices. Love the shrimp and cilantro dumplings. Also 5 or 6 congees. South side of the street and closer to Aventura.

Szcheuwan/Cantonese chinese restaurant 'near' Aventura

Having loved the Chinese food choices in Toronto, esp. Rol San on Spadina and eaten well in SF and NYC Chinatowns, I will recommend an authentic Chinese restaurant. King Palace at 330 NE 167th St., in North Miami Beach. They have wonderful BBQ pork and duck, nice hot pots, huge variety of soups, lots of noodle dishes and their shrimp with walnuts is one of the best shrimp dishes ever. Very big menu with many vegetarian choices. Service is good and their prices are fair. Their salt and pepper flounder is also excellent. Hope this helps.

Do we HAVE to eat breakfast at Diplomat?

Georgio's Bistro & Market is on the Intracoastal Waterway and serves breakfast. Outside tables are on the water. Very good baked goods. Reasonable prices for breakfast.

Any Bubble Tea Updates?

Wow! Bubble tea in NMB. Can't wait to try it. Enjoyed bubbles in NYC, Chicago, SF and Toronto.

Merlo on Maple, disappointed.

My wife and I dined at Merlo on Maple on the upper floor. The restaurant is beautiful and the candles on the tables give off a beautiful glow and there is soft background jazz. Old world atmosphere and our expectations were high.

My wife had the prosciutto with figs and the Arctic char special with tricolor green beans. Her fish looked and tasted like salmon but was very good. The beans were green, not tricolor. My choice was the salad crocante and the risotto with zucchini and black truffles. The salad was ok, nothing special. The risotto was the worst I have eaten. Dry and tasteless and served as a cylinder. The rice did not taste like the wonderful arborio rice I enjoy. Our server spent most of the night chatting up a young couple at the next table and had no idea what service should be. Not cheap and we will not return.

Floridian returning

Many thanks for your reply. Yes, I enjoy almost all cuisines and upscale to dives. Any restaurants with unusual wines? I especially like Alsatians and wines from the Loire and Jura in France. Any recs for Asian places on Argyle? I want to explore Hyde Park on this visit. So, any restaurants in that area?

Thanks again.

Floridian returning

Coming to your wonderful city for July. My last visit was two years ago. Had wonderful meals at Charlie Trotter's, Naha and Blackbird. I would like to return to all three. Am staying in River North but do not mind traveling. Open to all cuisines and price ranges. Planning to go to Everest to celebrate a special occasion.

I am looking for hidden gems with great and/or unusual food. I live in Miami which does not have good Chinese, Mexican or Greek. Prefer non-tourist places. Any Indian spots besides Devon Ave? Is Berghoff's still around? I remember it from my childhood.

Thanks in advance.

What are Miami's must-try restaurants and foods?

Good seafood and character on the Miami River at Garcia's, 389 SW N River Dr., Miami, telephone 305.375.0765. Versailles on Calle Ocho is traditional Cuban, http://www.versaillescuban.com/. Delicious plantain omelets and batidas which are milk shakes made with tropical fruits. Both are cab rides away.

BYO

Many thanks for all your replies. We are looking forward to the "BYO" scene in Philadelphia.
