What cookbooks have you bought lately? Springtime edition, part 2

I have Grazing... it's getting tattered enough that it's about time I get another. The pizza dough and berry white chocolate scone recipes are in frequent rotation. :)

The Entenmann's book is going back. Upon second look there's a whole swath devoted to "Almost Homemade." ick.

I hit Homesense tonight (Red Deer AB) found the Entenmann's Big Book of Baking for $9.99-picked it up for the sake of curiosity & nostalgia. Also saw Trish Magwood's In My Mother's Kitchen for $24.99 but decided to wait on that one-glad I did, Chapters has it online for $15.67 (member price)

Shortbread Placecards

If I were concerned with writing 60+ names legibly I'd either use a cricut cake to make the names and set them on top of royal icing and finish them with a border or have a local bakery who does photo cakes make the names for me and cut them out to fit & finish.

For cookie decorating/royal icing tips I always go to sweetopia.net

Bake sale? What should i bake?

Sure is...not sure if you have swedish fish-they're a little sturdier than gummy bears. I used the quickset method, and added a fish to the bottom using a skewer and a few peeking out the top heads/tails up. I think Maynard's Swedish Fish are Canadian but a quick google shows there are other brands-and an "Aquatic Life" mix that would make for interesting aquariums: http://www.candywarehouse.com/products/swedish-fish-aqua-life-5lb-bag/

Bake sale? What should i bake?

My kids' last school never held bake sales so I've only become a bake sale veteran the last few years. Thanks to advice received here I package everything individually and make either whoopie pies or sandwich cookies (reverse oreos) for most of their sales and they always sell out.

I was caught short on time for the last sale and made jello aquariums, packaging them in sundae cups with a lid and spoon-those went quick too but it felt like cheating :)

What are you baking these days? April 2012 [old]

Yep the jello aquariums were very cute-although hard to see the fish once they were submerged. Next time (there's a surplus of swedish fish in the house and three eager kids hehe there *has* to be a next time) I'll have to try making them more shallow so it's easier to see the fishies. I think I might try making some honeydew melon "kelp" too.

ETA-I made them using the "quick set" method on the package so I could pour the slightly set jello into plastic sundae cups without the risk of melting the cups and put them in the fridge for 15 minutes, added the first fish, waited another 15 minutes and added two peeking out the top. Once filled, snapped on the sundae lids and used a colored elastic to secure a spoon to each cup. Sold out in short order. :)

It's been a busy start to the month so I haven't had a lot of time in the kitchen. Earlier this week I made the Gourmet Raspberry Buttermilk Cake for Easter dinner with family. Today I baked a Flourless Chocolate Decadence Cake and put together a few dozen jello aquariums for a Fun Fair/ Bake Sale & Decadent Dessert Night at the kids' school tonight.

mini buns in edmonton?

I'd call your local Sobey's bakery dept. I saw some at the Sylvan Lake Sobey's just the other day.

Caitlin the lemon glaze from Barefoot Contessa's Lemon Loaf Cake might work here - very lemony and opaque & no cream cheese involved. http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/ina-garten/lemon-cake-recipe/index.html Otherwise I might just sandwich them with some lemon curd with/instead of the glaze.

Thank you so much! I won't have much time in the kitchen til late next week but these are first on my list!

I don't suppose you could paraphrase or point me to a link for those cookies? They sound terrific & I googled but can't find the recipe.

Thanks in advance!

Happy Pie day! I'm flipping through MS's Pies & Tarts for inspiration--both for today & an upcoming decadent desserts sale at the kids' school.

When do ethics come to play in your dining decision?

I thought I read that the flyer was a hoax/part of an NYU student protest- but based on http://gawker.com/5747111/anti+gay-fast-food-chain-uproar-ignores-crucial-taste-issue I can see why they've developed such a bad rep.

Bean Cookbook recommendations

I have Spilling the Beans and so far everything I've made from it has been fantastic. The baked penne with sausage, spinach and beans (and variations) is in regular dinner rotation--and it also freezes well :)

I can vouch for the Peanut Butter Pie Recipe here: http://www.injennieskitchen.com/2011/08/for-mikey.html it was delicious ...so good that I haven't made it again for fear of eating it all :)

Favorite Pioneer Woman Recipes

Yeah I find PW's Cinnamon rolls rather rich but then they are cinnamon rolls :) I use Smitten Kitchen's cream cheese glaze (frosting? consistency is somewhere in between) in place of PW's Mocha sauce.

Other favorites:

Bacon wrapped jalapeno thingies which I am *ahem* required to make for all football gatherings. I've made them with bacon, and without, topping them with panko instead. Fantastic either way. I also get raves for her Pico de Gallo and Guacamole. Love her guac! I don't live in an area where bonafide mexican or even tex mex places are abundant (we're north of Calgary Alberta Canada) so I don't have much to go on except that it tastes fantastic to me! :)

thoughts about splitting the home cooking section into cooking and baking?

I think splitting the two would be rather problematic.

Example: For dinner I baked pretzel buns, made sloppy joes and roasted potatoes and we had chocolate chip cookies for dessert.

With the board split as suggested I'd have to post the buns and cookies on one board and stick to only posting about the sloppy joes and potatoes in the What's For Dinner thread.

I have two sets of the Wilton heart molds - picked them up at Homesense (same parent co. as Homegoods/TJ Maxx/Marshalls) after Valentines in 2011. Michaels Craft Store also carries them iirc. Love Wilton's single silicone cups - I have the square ones too.

I often find muffin/cupcake recipes make more/just shy of 12, so the single molds come in handy.

How can I transform my thighs?

http://www.foodandwine.com/recipes/chicken-thighs-with-garlicky-crumbs-and-snap-peas

I made these when Molto Mario was COTM last summer, doubled the batch for a family get together and they disappeared in record time. I'm sure you could sub out the garlic or use powdered.

An interesting article about Le Creuset...

Seeking the perfect make-ahead drunk food

I can only think of one thing aside from what's been mentioned aleady:
Frito Pie. Open a small bag of Fritos down one side. Top with chili. Grab a spoon and dig in :)
