Amada during RW

The asparagus from the usual menu is on the RW week menu and is one of my favorite dishes in the whole city, strongly recommend.

New Yorker looking for quintessential Philadelphia Cheap Eats

Speaking of Mama's, if you're less vegie inclined there's a great middle eastern food truck at the corner of 20 and Market, there's no menu just ten dollars for chicken, falafel, and whatever else he's making that day. Get there early (lunch only) because lines and running out of things can be issues. The guy has a bit of a "soup nazi-esque" reputation, don't ask for more then one platter per person that's standing in front of him and just smile and nod at his ramblings, but its worth it.

New Yorker looking for quintessential Philadelphia Cheap Eats

Big second for DiNic's roast pork (with everything), though it would be crazy to have a philly cheap eats thread with out mentioning that the whole redding terminal market is a culinary wonderland.

A few other spots to check out:

Almaz Cafe for Ethiopian on

Vietnam and Szechuan Tasty House in Chinatown

Sabrina's and Honey's for Breakfast / Brunch

Vic's for seriously cheap yet great sushi

Any number of food trucks along 38th Street (Yue Kee, Don Memo, KoJa) for lunch

Mr. Martino's Trattoria (Fri-Sun dinner only, byob)

Tiffin for Indian

Lots of gastro pubs worth checking out: Pub and Kitchen, Standard Tap, and Good Dog to name just a few

Please help finalize Philly list!! (Researched)

Had dinner at Zahav this weekend for the first time in a year and let me echo your comment about the service, its really fallen off of a cliff. Our server was curt, courses came out in a bizarre order, and the pacing of the meal just seemed rushed. Its a shame because I had some fantastic experiences with the place when it first opened, hopefully they can get things back on track.

Really good brunch in or near center city - non-hotel

I would recommend Supper, they do a nice brunch and its a really lovely space.

Chifa

Went the other night, mostly I had a positive experiance but one thing definately rings true in your review: one of the two ceviches I had (some kind of snapper I think) was really not ceviche at all and bland sashime would be a much better description. Have to disagree about the lobster noodles though, they were great, and the duck ceviche was a highlight of the night.

Onion Rings

For Onion rings at a bar I've had some great ones at Pub and Kitchen and some almost great ones at Taproom on 19th down in South Philly.

Very quiet, BYO in Center City Philly?

I've always found that Pumpkin is pretty quiet, though it might end up being a touch above your price range?

Is moving Rae a good idea?

Not sure if its a good idea but I can see that something more casual would definitely work better where Rae is now and I think that's what the plan is. Rae has already basically been turned into a casual restaurant just because that's what the people who go there treat it as. While I think Stern's idea was to make it a signature upscale restaurant I think a disproportionate amount of their business comes from people who work in in Cira / are stuck in 30th street looking for a nice place for lunch or an early drink, while it does both of these things really well it should move if it actually wants to focus on being a place to go for a nice dinner (and after 10 arts and table 31 have been so disappointing there could be a real gap to fill there). This makes me wonder what is going to happen with 10 Rittenhouse though, I seem to recall that Stern was rumored to have something in the works for that building too.

HELP! Buffalo Wings in Philly

I've been looking for good wings in Philly for a while now, the closest I've found is Ed's in UCity.

Di Vino

Has anyone else been to Di Vino (new wine bar on 19th near just south of Rittenhouse) yet? Stopped in the other night for a glass of wine and ordered one thing off the menu, the pork belly split between me and another person, and it was really fantastic. I've been thinking of going back and doing the tasting but I'd like to know if others have had good experiences before doing that (its fairly expensive). Thoughts?

Rittenhouse - Corned Beef Hash

I'm not sure if they'll make it by request, but I know its definately not on the menu, I was pretty shocked when I found out.

What to order at Kanella?

The seafood, the fish changes daily so its hard to make a specific recomendation, when I was there I had a salt cod special app that was amazing.

Anyone been to "Time" [Restaurant, Whisky Bar & Tap Room, Absinthe Lounge] which replaced Ludwig's Garten on Sansom?

I agree that the food was pretty good and the physical space was really nice, but I was really disapointed in the "whisky bar". The scotch selection is probably rivalled by that of any of the better Irish pubs in town with maybe two or three interesting bottles thrown in. I'm not asking for the Brandy Library (hoping, praying maybe) but I asked for a Bruichladdich, which I don't even think of as being that exotic, and the guy looked at me like I just ordered the caviar at McDonalds and then gave me some line about how it was too expensive for them to carry (never mind that the Lagavulin that they had is usually comparable or pricier).

BYO Dinner after matinee at the Academy of Music - need help

Also close by, and one that I think is generally underated, is Mercato on Spruce between 12th and 13th.

Not too exotic, not too heavy

If you're thinking of not doing small plates then supper should be out too as that's also their thing. For lighter fare I always think something Mediterranean, had an unbelievable meal at Kanella (byo) a week or two ago or you could do something like Zahav, though we might be back to exotic there.

If you want to go American and are alright with the BYO thing I think Marigold, Audrey Claire (get the octopus for yourself), and Pumpkin do a great job with keeping things light, especially in their summer menus. If BYO is a non-starter there's Snackbar (which has generally toned down the weirder elements of their menu) or if you really just want a salad and a glass of wine Tria is always great for that.

Rittenhouse - Corned Beef Hash

Okay, I've been searching for about a year now for somewhere that makes good corned beef hash within walking distance of Rittenhouse and I'm ready to give up and ask for help. Does anyone know where I can find some? I feel like I've been to most of the diners and informal brunch places in the area and its just totally mind boggling to me that I haven't run accross any of what I think of as a staple of any half decent diner? Is this just culture shock from moving the half hour from Jersey to Philly or am I missing something here?

Eulogy vs Monks

I really enjoy both but I've been wondering for a while because I've never been: how do people like Zot? Where does it fit in in the Philly Belgian universe?

Lunch in University City (Philly)

Not sure what you're looking for exactly but if you're looking for something a little nicer Rae is in the lobby of the Cira Center which is connected to 30th stree station and they do a nice (and reasonable, compared to dinner) job with lunch and there's also Pod on Sansom north of 36th for asian fusion type things (try the rock shrimp dim sum). There's also White Dog and Newdeck on Sansom just north of 34th which are both variations on a tap room (White Dog a little nicer, Newdeck a little more college). If you're a little more rushed / adventurous try Denise's, a soul food truck across the street from 30th street station in from of the post office, the fried fish with rice and beans and a side of candied yams is one of the greatest things I've ever eaten (and the rest of what they make is great as well).

It does, they still have the bar stool tables but most tables are now with normal chairs.

Thai Dim Sum in Philly?

Oh, well its pretty much exatly what you would expect, dim sum at a thai restaurant. It has a specific name in thai but I'm drawing a total blank on it right now. Some of the things are similar to what you would find at a Chinese dim sum (various dumplings) but most of the dishes are specifically thai, lots of curry in puff pastry and shrimp in various fruit sauces and the like.

Thai Dim Sum in Philly?

Just moved to the area and was wondering if any Thai restaurants in town do dim sum style brunches. One I used to go to in upstate New York was one of my favorite meals and I've been trying to find something similar without much luck. I'm really hoping to find one that's just Thai food and not a Chinese restaurant with a few Thai dishes thrown in for good measure.
