Julieta Cuisine Latine

I was there last night. They carry 4 whites, 4 reds, and Red Stripe Beer. Thumbs up (not me personally but from others) for the Fumé Blanc and the Argentinian Malbec.

Saveurs & tentations

is this show coming back in 2012? I enjoyed going and would do so again.

Restaurant Closings in 2012

I'm impressed that it survived under all that scaffolding.

Jos et Basile / closed?

I was at JTM today and tried to go to Jos et Basile. Not only were the doors locked, but the center refrigerated counter was gone and so were a lot of shelves and products. Are they gone? I have a particular fondness for their arancini -- I have on previous occasions walked down the Main back to the bus stop, munching on a warm arancini like its fruity namesake. And no one else seems to sell them, or if they do they are not as good as these ones.

Any and all info greatly appreciated.

High Tea

thumbs up from me for London Bus. it will certainly fit the request for quirky. Although someone else can have my cucumber sandwiches.

J'Aime Ste. Adele / any feedback?

I found out about this February foodie festival after reading a small blurb in the Gazette. Has anyone been to previous versions and if so what is your feedback? How accessible is it without a car?

I am debating whether this would be worthwhile, or if returning to to the ice cider festival in Rougemont is the better bet. It's the same weekend.

ISO food-grade lavender

I got a packet at Anatol, it was in the herbal tea section and I was assured it was food grade.

Your all time favorite 'TV' cooking show chefs?

Yes he was based in Vancouver.

Food Events & Festivals in Quebec & Montreal - 2012 Master List

I like the concept of Dishcrawl, I've done 3 of them. Loved the first one (desserts), less than thrilled with the others. until now, I did not understand why they were so expensive. Thanks EaterBob!

My turn to ask a question. As part of High Lights, is the cheese festival returning to Complexe Desjardins, or are we stuck with the cheesy chef competition at the Queen E? (Fully aware of the pun)

Any good restaurant in the East-side of Montreal?

it depends what day you go, what is on the menu. it is what the students have been practicing. it is fancy fare, market fresh, but not limited to any one cuisine. I like to go when it is the buffet and I get a bit of everything :) I have also been when it is a sit-down meal, and one time there was a 6 course tasting menu and we had to go "50-50" (i.e. there were two choices and one person took menu A and the other took menu B so there was no waste). I have not yet been for lunch.

I have not done takeout but I have peeked into the "boutique" where there are breads and meats and cheeses. A little pricy for me.

whenever you get there, bring thy camera, a lot of love and care go into presentation.

Any good restaurant in the East-side of Montreal?

If you like sushi may I highly recommend two places on Beaubien with virtually identical menus: Sachi Sushi and Itamea (the one near Chabot).

I would also like to nominate Le Max-Rupp, the restaurant at the Calixa Lavallée Culinary Institute.

SAT Foodlab

I was there last night after visiting the Souk. Very crowded and rather spartan but the other guests were in a positive mood. got goulash and tourtière as takeout, and really liked both of them. But nowhere to sit and wait for the food (although I didn't have to wait long). Any tips on when is the least crowded time to go?

Need a place for breakfast for 45 people Downtown Montreal

I've been to Universel for both breakfast and supper, I found it quite enjoyable. If you hear a deathly grinding of gears during your meal, nothing is falling down and the metro isn';t driving by next door -- it's the onsite yogurt maker. the largest group I've been there with is ~20 and service was acceptable for me.

I'd suggest Tropical Hawaii or Veritas but not sure either one can seat 45.

Best and Worst Grocery Store Finds...

I would put Coaticook on the yuck list. When I worked in Cours Mont Royal, periodically there would be free tasties of the ice cream in the elevator lobby. all the flavors tasted like whipped air to me. Pistachio was never one of them -- the choice was vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, and maple.

For the yum list, I nominate the Marina Del Rey Orange Mango frozen tilapia, available at IGA. Very tasty, with tons of sauce. I recommend it with couscous to soak up all the liquid.

Restaurant Closings in 2011

Does this mean ALL the Biftheques are gone now? I know the downtown one was toast a while ago, but there were other locations in Quebec and Ontario.

Where can I buy walnuts?

I ws at the produce show last week and Amira had a full-page handout claiming their walnuts tested negative. And we have seen plenty of walnuts at IGA ("bulk" section).

Still, for our next bake sale I'm encouraging my mom to bake walnut-free.

The Best Baklava in Montreal?

Wow what a drool-worthy thread! For sheer variety may i suggest Marché Adonis in Place Vertu, I was killing time a few months ago before a movie and I was just floored by their huge pastry counter with about 10 different kinds including a sugar free version. maybe it's a good thing the place is an hour and a half from home.

Oh and in 2009 I learned how to make my own. Time consuming, expensive, and very clove-y, but fun :)

(At the produce show this week I picked up a recipe card for Blueberry Baklava. Yes I shuddered at the idea too. But I might try making it someday.)

Anyone been to Restaurant Fibo?

I missed out last night --- how was it?? worth the $$?

Conference Dinner near Concordia?

it's on the 7th floor of the Hall building. If your meeting was already at Concordia it would make sense. But I am unable to put my hand on a link how to reserve there.

I have been to the faculty club when I was an employee (1992 - 94) and later for a few alumni events. I do not remember what was on the menu, but it was a nice place.

Conference Dinner near Concordia?

If you go to Magdala be sure to watch who sits on the wooden benches. They will not hold the weight of three well-built people at once. Cracking chairs are very scary! I attest from personal experience :(

What about Mango Bay? (caution: group service charges) or the Concordia faculty club?

Baking with Stevia [split from the Quebec board]

can you bake with it? we're talking cakes, cookies, etc. some people won't eat splenda which is what I usual;ly use for sugar-free baking. I've heard stevia is pretty powerful like 300x sugar, so not sure how to substitute with it.

Question about buying whole wheat grain in Montreal

I have a similar need for a small amount of wheat. Will this grain sprout? This is to follow a tradition from Provence to sprout the wheat for Christmas and decorate the "13 Desserts" table.

Alpenhaus restaurant

I believe that was the Chalet Lucerne. Never been there though.

Food events (2010)

Expo Gourmet has been mysteriously cancelled. Their entire website is replaced with a very plain page stating that fact, with no explanation.

Indian Breakfast

mmmm I am intrigued! I can't eat the egg-bacon-ham-sausage parade you find everywhere else for breakfast. When my dinner group had a brunch club, I was the lone "weirdo" ordering fruit salad and pastries.

thank you for the suggestions!

Au Coq and Benny

Does anyone know why some Au Coq locations are suddenly calling themselves Benny Chicken? I have seen delivery cars around the Honoré Beaugrand metro with the two logos on them. One store that I know is rebranded is the one on Pie IX in Montreal North. But I haven't been in yet to check it out.

Restaurant Openings - 2010

never mind, I passed by this morning and saw the bankruptcy sign on the door. Boy that was fast! Then again it seemed to be closed more than it was open.

Gluten Free Montreal?

In terms of desserts, macarons should be a safe bet as they do not contain wheat flour. So any of the various macaron purveyors will be a good choice. In a similar vein would be a Pavlova or other meringue type dessert.

Restaurant Openings - 2010

New steakhouse called Grillades Phénix in the exact location of the Le Biftheque in Cours Mont Royal. According to the seating hostess it opened June 1 with the same staff and "almost" the same menu. Looks a whole lot fancier to me! They claim it's part of a larger U.S. chain. I have not (yet) eaten there.
